Hi Midnite. When I first saw that Jacob was in the bottom three, I thought the same as you, he insulted a lot of people with his "mirror" comment. Their media coach from TMZ didn't do a whole lot for these contestants when it comes to how to avoid sticking your foot in your mouth. Do you really think Haley's experimenting or brown-nosing? Her over use of the growl is what causes me to think the latter. Isn't it ironic that Pia gets voted off when she didn't do a ballad and was dressed by Gwen Stefani? Which one factor was it - or both. Having the Mr. or Miss Perfect image doesn't do much for an artist celebrity these days because people don't identify with that. And when one competes against less than perfect people with whom people can identify, one can't win a popularity contest. The judges seemed to react with indignation when they heard that Pia was voted off. Here's my message for them (pardon me if I sound like Randy):"Yo dudes, critique these contestants and stop being cheerleaders." This point in the competition is were Simon is missed. It's harder to critique when the performance level gets higher - especially when the crowd is trying to intimidate you. Simon had the honesty and the fearlessness necessary to deliver suggestions for improvement. The judges are in a position to influence the swing voting - which is where I believe Pia lost some votes in addition to the negativity towards the Miss Perfect image. So they have only themselves to blame for the results.

Yeah S-Yo, the judges ain't doing anyone any favors with their praises, and if I hear "NAME is in it to win it" one more time I'm gonna rip my left testicle off and slip it into the judge's soup.

Maybe Haley growls a bit much, but no more than Steven Tyler let's go with one of his patented screeches...I guess I'm just more of a fan of variety, and at least Haley tries...Sometimes I even think she "feels" it. Pia, even on Tina Turner's song just didn't work for me. I feel like I'm watching a Stepford wife.

And variety is where the guys have been shining, except for Jacob...And as long as I'm bring snarky, if Jacob's only question at TMZ is if that woman was available, all's I can say is Dude, you gotta get out more.

Satchel was right. Something is gaining on me.

I was surprised at Pia's departure. Midnite, I agree with your "take" on her performances though. Great vocals but little entertainment factor. The Gwen Stefano "outfit" probably caused the teeny boppers to gag and thus not vote for her.

My primary complaint with "IDOL" is the miserable talent thus far displayed by the guest artists. Is that all they can dig up? Surely, there are better performers available. JPF could provide better sounding stuff than these nearly naked, gyrating fools crank out on "kickoff nights." I'll take music over noise any day.

Still, it's a better show this year... and the talent of this group of kids is impressive. I won't even attempt to pick the winner due to the flawed voting process.

Who's next to get the axe? Probably poor Stefano but I think he's alot better than he sometimes appears. Yep, it's a very interesting show this year.

All I gotta say is take a look at the face of Paul McDonald when Brian S. was "consoling" Pia. His mouth was wide open and his eyes were as big a saucers. The guy can't sing and Pia is the best of the lot- he knows it. But Paul and Stefano are still standing and Pia is gone. The judges are probably wishing that they hadn't saved Casey because he cannot win it all even though he is the most complete "musician" in the contest.

It's a popularity contest and anyone without a good fan base is always vulnerable. Casey didn't have and still doesn't have an identifiable fan base. The ones who do have large enough fans to reach the top three are: Lauren Alaina, James Durbin and Scotty McCreery. Clearly Scotty is not as talented (vocally) as any of the remaining contestants, but that shows you the power of a single demographic (country) to keep their "guy" in it to win it. And after his Elvis song, he picked up some wild eyed star struck preteens to add to the solid country fans.
Finally, you have to ask "Who is voting" and who cares enough to vote two, ten or a hundred times? Teen age girls who identify with Lauren, rock on with Durbin and want to go to the prom with Scotty.

Midnite...Well, I voted and I have voted since the show started what is it 11 seasons now? BUT oddly enough I am far from a teenager in love with Stefano...and my mom votes, and she is well...older than me..

laugh

and Big Jim, god love ya...(you know I say this in jest) but this little tiny part of the site likes AI...give us that.. tongue and it's ok...really. we are allowed, right? grin If ya hate AI so much, whatcha reading this forum for? tongue

I was really aggravated with what Jacob Lusk said about his singing would not be the reason he is voted out...but because we can't look ourselves in the mirror...well, I am not that happy with my mirror image... laugh BUT I wonder if he realizes those are "fighting" words and very condesending..like whatever he would sing would be perfect...and it's our lack of ability to be humane and a good person if we don't vote for him...give me a break. Good singer, yes. Too pious..yes yes.

I think Pia has a beautiful voice and she is stunning. I think someone needs to coach her on stage presence a bit. I was sad to see her go, 'cause she can sing.
BUT..
My favorites are Lauren...Casey and James. In that order. grin
and people tell me I should pull for Scott...because he is a local boy. I love country, but he tries too hard to copy Josh Turner and seems to be a one trick pony, BUT if he were given the right original country song, he probably would have some fans. I have heard worse in country music today, but he needs a bit more refinement, and that comes with experience..jmho.

anyways. Just had to chime in. I wonder what they are singing next week...they used to announce it beforehand..

Thanks for the links Linda. I was too lazy to find 'em. I remember when Brian A. Whitney first tuned us in to Jake and how I felt like my mind went into a wormhole or something 'cause I just couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Seriously Folks, ya gotta check Jake out.

And back to AI, does Fox have a deal with Will I Am or something? Dude's been on 3 of the last 4 fours weeks. Enough already!

Hi Bob:

I just took the time to listen to "Weeps" as played by Jake and was stunned. Anyone with the ability to make a simple four stringed instrument "sing" is a talent beyond comprehension. Impressive work and performance. George Harrison would be proud. Reminds me of Segovia... from another era.

Thanks for sharing this one with us. I enjoyed it alot.

What do you think of Pia's departure? The judges were practically crying.

I was disappointed at Pia's departure. Prior to that, I would have picked four of the remaining male vocalists to form a quartet, and sing against her. They would have lost. The producers have to be cringing. Three of the hottest female singers in the top 24 are gone. I refer to style as well as to singing ability. What they have left is sincere gospel, Rod Stewart re-incarnated, and a country boy who evokes the cover of Mad Magazine with his posturing.

Since we have a few days before the next AI show, I thought I'd invite the JPF crowd following this thread to post any songs that they wrote that they could pitch to one of the remaining AI contestants. I'll start off with my link to RAISE A SON for Scotty: www.broadjam.com/summeoyo

Please provide posters(including me) with feedback on their choices of pitch songs.

IA has been very entertaining this year .. some really good singing .. and at times not so good
I enjoy reading the JPF summaries smile

My short summary ..
Casey won my heart when he came out with that upright bass and outdid himself with Georgia .. I LOVE Georgia love .. he lost it for a couple weeks, but this week he was back in his rightful element ...

I also like Lauren .. another pretty young girl with a cool voice.. i think she can be shaped into a great performer

Pia is beautiful with a voice to match .. but yes.. BORING!!! No doubt she will have a singing career. I was surprised but not very sad to see her voted off.

Haley ... Everything in moderation...enough screeching! I cringe when she sings now... yet the judges howl in delight.

Maybe I am just not a rock n roll gal, I've also had enough of James .. he's good but I've also had enough of his high note screeches.

Paul is interesting, but he may not have dimension in his vocals to keep him through the series ..

Stefano & Jacob .. they are both good.. not sure if they are idols grin

But.. they will all be touring together, right?

Thats my 2 cents for this week
Joanne

Here's my two cents and with inflation better make it one cent....I gotta tell you I've never liked the word "Idol" in American Idol though I sometimes enjoy the show. An idol is something you worship or idolize and frankly I don't idolize any person or thing or band or song or car or diamond or fill in the blank. I worship God. Wish they'd called it "American Talent" or "So You Think You Can Sing" or etc. I've skipped "Idol" for years and tuned back in again this year hearing there was some real talent and new judges.

Hearing Jacob sing Bridge Over Troubled Waters reminded me of the old days and here's a link to that same song being sung years back from a well-known previous contestant who found much success after the show as a runner up.

http://youtu.be/QC9SKjdoTXg

I can feel the darts but I liked Simon as a judge. crazy Anyhoo (where's our Beth) I think right now if we were allowed to pick let's say 3 winners instead of one this would be my list and in this order.

Stefano - Pop, etc.
Lauren - Country
Scotty - Country (I think he is genuinely sweet and I hope he never loses that sincerity) and yes he can sing.

The public decides and even then the test is what happens in the years that follow, not this one nite. When I think of who went on to "make it" I think of Kelly, Clay, Carrie and Daughtry. Time will be the true test.

Just my two cents minus inflation.....

Lynn, I tend to agree with your first paragraph r.e. the show's title....but that said. It is what it is....and it's probably too late to change that now. So, I will not be forwarding my suggestions to the producers any time soon. They'd just say...Jan WHO!!! LOL.

I have missed only a couple shows, since the AI's inception. I don't call myself an expert, but I do know how the talent has definitely ramped up this season, looking back at all of the past seasons.

What I like about this year, is that everyone is trying to stay true to who they are....playing to their own God given strengths....for the most part, unless they are swayed by their musical mentors from time to time. I like that. We can only be our best, when we are fully who we are meant to be.

Was I sorry to see Pia go? Sure...I think she had a real shot at it, but on the other hand, she needs work on her stage performance. Vocally, she is top notch....but being voted off at this time, may have been a blessing in disquise. That gal will have no trouble getting signed to a label. She is the whole potential package.

Here's my breakdown and personal opinion (out of sync as to their performance order last night)

Stephano....great kid, great voice....but he shone brighter than ever before last night, with the Boyz To Men song. He did a stellar job on it, IMO. Real nice looking guy....Again...the whole Pop package.

Lauren Alaina....if a major country label doesn't sign this fresh-faced, ubber talented young lady....they are totally missing the ship. She is outstanding!! And....what a nice girl. I hope she never changes. She....has it all.

Scotty.....it's hard to believe that he is only 17 with that deep, rich voice. There again....everything I said r.e. Lauren's potential.....go ahead and apply it to Scotty, as well.
I think the voting demographics are such, that he and Lauren are getting the lion's share of the people's votes each week.

Paul.....I love his uniqueness. I think he is a great performer....not the best vocally, but the best at pulling off who he is on stage. I don't think he will end up in the top two or even three, but I always enjoy watching him and seeing what he is going to do next.

James Durbin.....Well, he is a bit cocky and his attitude may send him home, before his time, but he is great at what he does. He didn't want to listen to the musical coaches this week, but instead came out and gave everyone another large dose of where his heart is.....can't fault him for that. Will he win it?.....depends on who's voting...my gut says no. Will he get a recording contract out of this gig.....absolutely!!

Jacob....Well, he is a really soulful singer and I love to listen to most of his performances. This week he didn't preach to the audience...(he had been warned) Nothing turns off a crowd more than a performer that thinks he knows more than the unenlightened crowd. And...thank God, he has let go of most of the facial contortions and over dramatizations...that was hurting him. Will he win it? I hope not. He did a really nice job on Bridge Over Troubled Water", though.....I love that song, but I would much rather hear Clay Aiken sing it any day. THANKS LYNN, FOR SENDING THAT LINK.....IT GAVE ME CHILLS...AGAIN.

Hailey.....I have never understood the hype about her. When she messed so badly with Joplin a couple weeks ago....that did it for me. I loved Janis Joplin....not her lifestyle, but her talent....so when someone comes out trying to be her....well, like I said....that clinched it for me. Hailey's performances do nothing for me at all. I think she will go home sooner than some people may think.

Casey Abrams....probably the most genuinely gifted contestant that I have ever seen on the show. What a nice unassuming guy. All he wants to be is....Casey. He is uniquely his own. I love that about him. He will def. get alot of work from this exposure he is getting on AI....but I don't think he has established a fan base....at least among the younger crowd who is most likely doing the most voting. He deserves to win...but won't. He's not the whole package...unfortunately....the looks aren't much there....and sad to say....that's what they seem to want. But.....he's the most talented.

Who goes home tonight? Here is my best guess at the bottom three, first of all.

Hailey

Casey

Paul (he will probably go home, but I am pulling for it to be Hailey....just my bias coming through there)

Who will grab the brass ring, at the end?

Top 3 at the end:

Lauren

Scotty

James

Winner.....LAUREN ALAINA

Now that is my penny's worth. I love this show....don't care anything about my detractors...HA. I love what I love.

Oh, I am so much happier with the judges this year....personality-wise....but, they do need to be somewhat tougher to let them grow, but there are ways of doing that without crushing one's spirit too.

I had the pleasure of meeting Steven Tyler a few years ago. I worked with him for close to an hour and found him to be a really sweet, considerate guy. Just like on the show. You are seeing the real Steven Tyler in that judge's seat. He was extremely nice and real to me....very down to Earth....and you might not expect that in him....but I liked him very much.

Well, we'll see what happens tonight, won't we??

Jan....
(don't anyone call me tonight during prime-time, as I will be in front of my tv....popcorn/diet coke in hand.....and a fist full of tissues, just in case Hailey is still going to be there for next week. ( I did not just say that!!)

Janice I promise I won't call but please put down the diet soda it's not good for you, however enjoy the popcorn. I don't watch the nite they cut people, I just tune in for the competing nites. Yes, hard to believe Clay was eight years yonder ago..but in all candor I get goosebumps when I listen to him also. Honestly from his first audition I said to myself he's got something. IMHO he has the best male voice ever on Idol. When he sings he has such a stage presence of confidence and ease. I never heard or saw a bad or close to weak performance at all and he seems to effortlessly reach those high and low notes w/such control. He will no doubt have longevity in his musical career and he's diverse in his genres. I like that he loves the classics and brings them back to the table. Here's another link for more goosebumps.

Well, at least I called it right on who would be sent packing last night. Now, let's see if I get the "winner" right. Time will tell.

Both the diet pop and the popcorn went down well....as did the choice of who would go home at this point in their particular journey.

Same time...next week!

I took some time off posting here for a getaway with my wife
and an audition for X factor(see my X factor thread). However
here are my notes:

Paul Mc. I thought the choice to have sax with a female was
a good one. The version sounded like it belonged on SNL.
I liked it. He had all elements for entertaining in place.
Lauren Good song pick. She easily outdid Miley Cyrus
(no great feat) but some pausing choices weren't to my liking.
Stefano Strong vocal performance. Sang like a winner, dressed
like a loser.
Scotty Bad song choice. George Strait owns it. He sounded like
a good karaoke singer to me. Had some rough spots.
Casey A. Producer took a negative stance on Casey with the shots
that were aired. I didn't think it was his best, but it was artsy.
Haley R. Janis Joplin meets Debbie Harry. I liked this one – though
there was too much growling again at the start.
Jacob L.. Excellent. Whow! Do voters have a short memory though?
James D. I didn't like the song choice. The performance however
was terrific.

So it was bye, bye to Paul although my bottom three were Stefano,
Scotty, and Casey. I thought Stefano was homeward bound.

The most interesting thing about this weeks contest (songs from motion pictures) is that so many of the contestants didn't listen to the producer/director's advice about song choice.

Scotty picked the George Strait song, "I cross my heart" against "expert" advice. The producer wanted him to sing Nilsson's "Everybody's talking at me" from Midnight Cowboy, 1969. I think it is a better song but it was written 25 years before Scotty was born so I think the producer is showing his age.

James wanted to give Heavy Metal another go and Lauren wanted to do the Miley Cyrus song, "The Climb" even though it has been done to death already- I didn't know it was in a movie- oh yeah a Cyrus movie right? that shouldn't count.

Casey took a big big gamble doing Nat King Cole's "Nature boy" against the advice of the producers. He got away with it because even perplexed viewer could tell how good he preformed it. But even if he sang it so well that Nat King Cole rose from the grave and shouted "Amen brother", he couldn't win the next American Idol contest singing it.

Paul McDonald has sounded throughout this contest like his voice flamed out somewhere on the road a couple of years ago. I don't no how he stayed in the contest as long as he did.

Haley dove back down to the bottom 3 again after two pretty good weeks and she will be gone next week leaving the eventual winner, Lauren, as the only girl left. The last two standing will be Scotty and Lauren as foreshadowed by their great duet, which sounded better than the other country duet Wednesday night- Kelly Clarkson and what's-his-name. I couldn't tell who he was because his 10 gallon hat covered his face. They say his name was Jason Aldean but I'm pretty sure he was actually a Liberian spy.

Here is how I think they will leave the stage from here on out:
Haley Reinhart, Stefano Langone, Jacob Lusk, Casey Abrams, James Durbin and Scotty McCreery- leaving Lauren Alaina. I think Lauren will win because she is Kelly Clarkson 2011. After Haley and Stefano go, the last five all deserve to be where they are. Scotty is the biggest surprise and should win the award for "Most improved".

I agree pretty much with your predictions Ott. You could be off one week on some depending on future performances.

Well Samuel, you're probably right. I much prefer Haley or Lauren, but I'm in the minority on that. Nonetheless, I said earlier that the boys will cancel each other out, so Lauren will probably win...I also think she'll be in rehab by the time she's twenty. Lovely voice, but her ditsiness annoys me and there's nothing "original" about her.

I also thought Haley & Casey's duet blew Lauren & Scotty's away. I must be missing something.

But the duet that I'd REALLY like to see is Scotty & James teaming up on the Donnie & Marie song "I'm a little bit country, I'm a little bit rock and roll", and at the end of the song, James can go all Ozzy on us and bite off Scotty's head...Yeap, I DO find Scotty that annoying....And I scared the dogs the other night when he justified doing te George Straight song by saying "I want to get back to my Country roots"?!?!?!?!? How far from his Country roots has the boy ever strayed?!?!?!? He's the most cowardly one trick pony I've seen in a long time.

....sigh........If I'd known the woman I recently married was gonna make me watch Idol this year, then I've asked for Valium as wedding gifts instead of scratch off lottery tickets.

Haven't posted here in a while because I watched delayed by several days or more usually.

I wasn't surprised to see Pia go, even though I felt she was among the most promising at the start. (I did say she was the worst the first week and I chose her as the second worst the week she left).

I was not surprised to see anyone go so far.

I chose Haley, Stefano and Scotty as the worst and thought Haley deserved to go but Stefano would. But I wasn't surprised to find Paul in the bottom 3 or gone because he's never once been in the top 5 and frankly, he can't really sing a full level and doesn't even try. The half whispery tone is a weak Rod Stewart at best (and Rod can BLOW IT OUT) and just lame lame lame most of the time.

Stefano had potential but has not demonstrated any of it yet. He'll go, even if he is great, very soon. So will Haley, though her duet with Casey was outstanding, one of the best non competition performances they have ever had was that duet.

Casey is forever tainted by the save and lost ALL his confidence and it's wearing him down. He was once the favorite, but no more.

Right now, the clear finalists are: James and Lauren. Scotty isn't as good as people think, as he sings the words, not the songs, but does that well. Lauren puts herself more into the songs. But nobody lets loose more naturally than James. Scott and Lauren can't make the finals because both sing country and will split the votes as people shift to non country singers when their faves go home. Casey will finish either 3rd or 4th with Scotty likely finishing opposite. I am not sure if Lauren can beat James. There's a zillion better female country singers waiting in the wings in Nashville already, (though she's good), but there's very few that do what James do because his style is just on the verge of making a comeback (80's are hot.. hair bands are coming back as is hard rock). I wouldn't bet against either Lauren or James, but for me James has been the best this season by a mile. His "genre" might be his undoing. Lauren may get ALL of Scotty's voters and if she does she'll win based on that. If, on the other hand, Scotty's voters are mad at Lauren or blame her, some might peel off for James. But I think ALL non country fans (i.e. all other genres and anyone who hates country) are going to James. So we'll see. I just hope the most deserving wins. But the last several years have proven that second place usually has more talent and historically outside of Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson) people who don't win do better than those that do.

In acting there are basically two methods: representational and presentational. These are also employed in song performance. Most of the remaining contestants are presentational - meaning like Brian said in reference to Scotty, they sing just words, and/or stay in rhythm, and use facial gestures and movements that they've copied in order to enhance their performance. Basically then they're karaoke singers. The representational singers interpret the song and internalize it - taking the song and making it their own personal experience. Jacob is the only one who does this consistantly. I believe Casey has done it on some performances. And on fewer occasions, so has Lauren. The representational method is the most effective in moving people emotionally. However the motivation for casting votes is so varied - street team votes, votes based on looks, votes influenced by the judges, votes based on proving that one's original predictation should come true, on singing ability, creativity, entertainment value, I could go on - that it's hard to pick a winner in advance.

Actually picking the final couple is usually not very hard... the top 4 this year isn't that hard either. I bet if 100 people chose their predicted top 4, at least 85% of them would get 3 of 4 or all 4 correct. From a pure talent point of view, it's really easy at this point with only 7 left. Haley, Jacob and Stefano have all been in the bottom 3, 2 of them a LOT. The other only 2 haven't ever been in the bottom 3 I think (I might be wrong, please tell me if I am) Lauren and James have never been in the bottom 3, all the rest have. Casey had the weird last place save position when most of the public sites and press had him ranked first or second best up to that point. The stress seems to have messed him up and missing a show due to stress related illness hurt him I think as well. He did have two weak performances, but he's also been amazing more than 2 times. Only James has also been amazing more than once and in his case it's become the norm. But the gals have to vote on someone and the last girl standing is Lauren (Haley frankly has had 1 quality performance and that was her duet with Casey where she lit up the room... but too little way too late for her).

I expect it's possible 1 person may surprise us and slip into the final 4. But does anyone expect that 3 of 4 of the group of Casey, James, Lauren and Scotty won't be there? I really think eventually Scotty and Lauren will be splitting the Country fan vote and one may be at risk before they deserve to be. Casey has been the only real surprise bottom dweller this season and they used the save on the right guy. But it's clear that Iovine doesn't want him to win because he's just not into him, or James for that matter. (James KILLED Heavy Metal and was the best of the night, going against Iovines advice). Lauren is his pet now that Pia is gone and she's not rocking his boat. Don't underestimate that as a factor going forward. Subtle manipulation is quite effective. But it's all just fun speculation in the end. Most of the fun is guessing who is going next.

James needs to step out of his genre and KILL a regular song like Adam did when he sang "Track of my Tears" for Smokey Robinson. He got a standing O from Smokey that night ... That could propel him to the title...He surely has the voice and range !

Are any of you getting tired of cover artists getting
credit for songs used on AI? Leann Rimes's cover
of the song may be in this century but the original
wasn't. Should Scotty receive a penalty for the
violation?
Scotty once again played it safe – which may not
be a bad strategy at this point because he has enough
voters to keep him safe. But......
James is consistently performing at a higher level
than the rest. He's giving a show almost every time
he performs. His creativity in preparing the show put
him well above the rest – even the judges noticed and
predicted correctly that he would be the best of the
night even though he was the 2nd to sing. That didn't
say much for the rest.
Haley R. Ho-hum. Karaoke with a growl.
Jacob L. Not his best. But JLo's comment about pulling
it together despite one's feeling about a song's message
was appropriate.
Stefano Karaoke with testosterone.
Casey A. Not his best – but clearly 2nd best of the night
to James.
Lauren A. We're hearing more often than not what an
underachiever she is. Is that who should be the next
AI – especially when there's a James who's overcome
a disability to shine brighter than those who supposedly
possess more talent?

Bottom 3? Take any except James and Casey – but Scotty
is safe because of the country voters. Let's put Haley, Stefano,
and Jacob in the bottom three with Haley going home.

Scotty McCreery: "Swingin'," LeAnn Rimes/ Jon Anderson (really)
I had to sing this song in a country band in the 90's covering Jon Anderson and I hated it. I think it is a terrible song but he sang it OK. Why he picked it, I don't know. My wife oddly enough hates country but loved that song. Go figure.

James Durbin, "Uprising,
" Muse.
This kid is a concert rocker and he puts on the best show. If this contest is won by the best concert performer- he wins hands down. But my wife said she couldn't understand a word he said. When Scottie sang she said, "I can understand every word he says".

Haley Reinhart, "Rolling in the Deep
," Adele.
It was better than Scottie but I already forgot it. But I think if there is a wild card in this bunch, she could be it. She is very inconsistent but sometimes she really soars like in the duet with Casey. She is also beautiful.

Jacob Lusk, "Dancing With My Father," Luther Vandross.
I think this kid needs to come back in about 2 years to get his emotions under control. I don't feel at ease watching him no matter how many runs he puts in.

Casey Abrams, "Harder to Breathe,
" Maroon 5.
Not impressed. I usually am with him but not tonight.

Stefano Langone, "Closer,"
Ne-Yo.
Not enough. I didn't care for the song.

Lauren Alaina, "Born to Fly," Sara Evans.

Well it is easy to pick the top two and she is one of them. I love listening to her. She has so much magic in her tone, and she seems to be unaware of what she pulls out of herself.

The safe one are James and Lauren, then Scottie is only because of the strong country fans. Casey kissed JayLo so he slides to the safe side. That leaves the bottom three as Stefano, Jacob and Haley. I have a feeling Haley was good enough to stick around on or two more weeks, but Stefano or Jacob are in trouble. To me, Jacob was the worst last night. Stefano is always "good" technically but he is never interesting. I think Jacob gets just enough sympathy votes to keep him ahead of Stefano. So my prediction, which is worthless of course, is Stefano.

I think James is going to win the whole thing. Lauren or Casey comes in second. I may be wrong. Anything's possible.

Sam gets the crystal ball award this week. However it's getting to be an obvious conclusion as to who are the ones to leave during the next two weeks unless of course one of the other contestants really messes up a performance. Stefano did show a lot of character the way he handled himself and probably did as much for his future career with that as he did with his performances.

Another non surprise, but I made my predictions before they even performed and still got the bottom 3 correct. Stefano could have gone just about any week. He was always a middle of the pack and he left in the middle of the pack of 13 in 7th place. Yawn.

Jacob was lousy, but he always is. He peaked in the pre-season. Haley sang flat or sharp (your choice) as usual. She tried to mimic her performance duet with Casey, which was her only truly good performance.

I thought the two weakest performances were actually Scott and Lauren, but knew neither would be in the bottom 3. Next week one of them will be though if things remain fair, which so far they have been. James and Casey are by far the two best. I'd like to hear them do an original at some point,

The 04/27 performances were good for the most part. Here's my take:

1) James Durbin showed that he can sing as well as do the rock show. The best of the night - again. JLo's observation leads me to believe that this contest is now James' to lose as far as the judges are concerned.
2) Scotty has been boring me the past few weeks. However his solo and duet with Lauren showed that he still is willing to take calculated risks. He's a smart player for a 17 yr. old.
3) Casey wasn't quite up to Scotty's performance this week - but he was better than the gals and Jacob. His duet with Haley wasn't up to the Scotty/Lauren duet.
4) Lauren had one of her better performance nights - delivering on both the solo and duet. My bottom 3 for her - but she should be safe.
5) Jacob's singing continues to be consistantly good. He's a gifted performer - but not an American Idol. The theatre awaits his exit from AI.
6) Haley's really not at her competition's level. However, she's more popular than Jacob. So he'll make his exit tonight.

I so look forward to the JPF weekly idol follow-up grin

I agree, James did a great job and has good chance at winning the contest, and seems to have support of the judges ..
I disagree.. i thought Casey was awesome.. he is an artist and performed, he didn't just sing a song. I love his cool natural jazz style ... still don't know if he has the popularity to win the whole thing ... i would like him to win.

I agree, this is the first week i sort of enjoyed Scotty's performance ..he did a nice job with You've Got a Friend...Idol quality? i don't think so

Lauren was good... a little weak.. i DO like her and think she is capable of much more if she would only believe it herself .. She has to make it happen!

Jacob can sing, but there's something i don't enjoy about his performances '
Haley .. stop growling! enough of that!

So, who will go tonight?? idk ... I think I will agree with summeoyo and say Jacob.

all the best
Joanne

Jacob Lusk “Oh No, Not My Baby“
The good, the bad and the ugly- he has it all.

Lauren Alaina “Where You Lead“
This, in my opinion, was her worst performance all season. She rushed her lines, seemed too concerned about staging the song and forgot to "sing" it. She has been coached to the point of ruin I guess. Where ever they are leading her, she is following right off the cliff.

Haley Reinhart and Casey Abrams “I Feel the Earth Move.”
A good song and these two work well together. If Jaylo isn't too jealous, I think they should marry and raise some baby base fiddles.

Scotty McCreery “You’ve Got A Friend“
He did much better than I thought he could and he continues to surprise me. Like him or not, he will be on the country charts very soon. I would love to pitch to him right now.

James Durbin “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.”
It there was any question as to who has been dominating the past few weeks, it was settled last night when he sang a song that, coming from a guy, could have been a disaster. He can go from a near scream to a perfectly modulated tender phrase in a millisecond. After tonight, I don't see anyone stopping him.

Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery “Up On the Roof.”
This duet was the most pleasant of the night. Scotty's counter melody was very good, putting to rest any lingering suspicions that he is a "one trick pony".

Casey Abrams “Hi Dee Ho,”
I loved the Blood Sweat and Tears original. Casey is a musician's musician and it was evident last night. I think the pro's love working with him. He speaks their language. Does he speak the American Idol language? That's the question.

Haley Reinhart “Beautiful”
The judges seemed to think it was wonderful. I had to listen to it on YouTube to change my mind. It is hard to compress a 4 minute song into 2 minutes and that is what was bothering me about it on first listen. This song was written with arranged "movements" that don't lend themselves to compression. She killed the ending on this song. She moves in front of Lauren this week.

James Durbin and Jacob Lusk “Something Tells Me I’m Into Something Good.”
They should have decided who would sing harmony because neither did and it was boring. The only thing it proved was how much better James is that Jacob.

Predictions? I think Jacob goes. Everybody is getting closer to both the bottom and the top at this stage. Lauren deserves to be in the bottom three but I wouldn't predict it. Best to worst for me goes like this:

1 James Durbin
2 Casey Abrams
3 Haley Reinhart
4 Scotty McCreery
5 Lauren Alaina
6 Jacob Lusk

But I think the bottom three will probably be: Jacob, Casey and Haley. I think Lauren and Scottie's popularity are too high- and they do sound good together.

The AI results this week were a mild shock. Possible
explanations for Casey's early departure could be
that his votes had been mostly swing voters who
were basing their votes on his entertainment value.
It is possible that James was able to grab that vote
from Casey. Haley's increasing popularity leads me
to believe that she may be the last girl standing -
although she isn't the most talented or entertaining
of the female contestants. She seemed to have a subtle
influence on Casey – who started to growl excessively
in his more recent performances. Casey just doesn't
strike me as the kind of artist who would attract the
multiple voting texting type. He was a favorite here
at JPF because he was a musician favorite. However
we aren't the type to blow our limited resources on
votes for an AI contest. Most of us go the one free vote
route. I was surprised that Jacob wasn't in the bottom 3.
My guess is that if AI would share the voting numbers,
they would show a huge disparity between James and
the remaining contestants. I think the votes for the four
remaining competitors against James were close in number.
Haley should continue to wear the short dress for
performances though and break out the more modest one
for results night as the testosterone vote may keep her
in this contest for a few more weeks. At this point, we
may be seeing the effect of the country vote splitting
Scotty and Lauren.

Hi Dee Ho Hum.. America is not ready for him. His goodbye song "Put a spell on you" was terrible. I think he even forgot the lyrics.

May 26 finale

Well, what the vote proves once again (as it has for most, not all but most, of the shows run: The best singer rarely wins... the best performer rarely wins... usually we find them finishing second... not 6th...

Casey made a huge mistake and I knew it when I saw it. Even though he was the second best of the night by everyone's opinion who has a clue about music just a tad behind James, he did a song that none of the little kids knew. My mom, who usually doesn't watch AI, was so in love with Casey (and my mom always participates in JPF judging as a fan judge so she knows music. She said she's done with the show forever. That if someone so clearly superior to at least 4 of the other competitors could be voted out not once but twice, the show was bogus. And so it seems it is. Musicians know Blood Sweat and Tears. His Jazz version was pure entertainment with above average but not earth shattering singing. But musicians GOT IT. We also got the original version. (My dad played the BS&T albums relentlessly and played drums to them during my childhood while we all sat on the couch and watched him). I wasn't shocked he went early, but going before such weak fellow competitors was a bit sickening. He's clearly been the second best all season. He's even beaten James a couple times as best of the night. None of the other contestants have ever been best of the night other than those two. But you HAVE to do a song people know and like. Period. Otherwise you could go out no matter how good you sing and perform. Casey is proof. He'd made good choices most of the season. You could see the disgust on the faces of the judges and even the other contestants who all knew he deserved to stay. Jacob is toast next week. By not putting him second to last, he won't get the vote bump second to last people often get. So bye bye Jacob unless he does the song from pre-season that was his only truly great performance this year.

Jacob is so creepy I can barely watch him. He doesn't sing well (he was flat and sharp and all over the place and his timing was terrible and his dancing really creepy). Haley was flat all night and went into her Casey influenced growl. Her only 2 great performances came during duets with Casey. He brought out her best. Compare her to Kelly Clarkson. Nuff said. She's undeserving. Lauren has been ruined by the judges and Jimmy Iovine. They need to leave her alone. But the bottom line is she's 16... in 4 years she'll be a well known country star. But she's not deserving of winning. But that doesn't mean she won't win. She has no real charisma, it's all fake when it appears she's connecting.. she's terrified and I think she's burned out as she gets worse each week. I saw this happen last year with Crystal who dominated the first 9 rounds and then hit a wall and limped to the finish and lost when she'd been the clear winner all season. Scotty is annoying. Sure, he can sing and he'll soon have hits. But compare him to Chris Young and he's not even in his league, though they sing in a similar old school-ish style. But the AI machine, especially this year, is well prepared to create multiple mega stars. hat leaves James Durbin. I had said to Linda that James had never had a week where he wasn't awesome. Then J-Lo said the same thing on the show. We're both right. He DESERVES now to win by a mile as Casey was his only rightful competition (and it would have been a really fun final show, now it will be half fun because anyone matched head to head with James will pale by comparison... BUT.. that's if he even makes the final. I think James will get nearly all of Casey's votes (a few will go to Haley I bet). None will go to the country kids or Jacob. The country kids have to split the vote eventually.. so likely it will be Scotty or Lauren versus James. But nothing really would surprise me at this point. It's not based on talent or entertainment. It's obviously little kids voting on line a zillion times. Maybe we'll have a Jacob versus Haley final. I mean, why not?

But I do hope for James he wins. He's been the best and unless he collapses like Crystal did (by the way she SUCKED on the show performance.. ack! And she's had so much cosmetic surgery she barely looks like the same girl including all new teeth) he's 3 laps ahead of the field with 3 laps to go. I want to see him sing with Aerosmith and trade riffs with Steven Tyler. It has to happen!

By the way Joe, they stated NOT in order of finish meaning Scotty was most likely in 4th, not Jacob. They put Scotty in the bottom for more drama and to try and propel him to the finale where I think they want him. Lauren isn't ready.. and the country vote is huge and has carried 2 singers this far.. they may figure one or the other will win and Scott is an easier sell.

Well just for fun, here are some strategies for tonight's performances for each contestant:

Haley - Wear a tight fitting leopard or tiger print outfit and continue singing the way you have for the past couple of weeks.

Jacob - Raiding Mr. Noodle's (from Sesame Street) dressing room may be working for you. Try it again.

Scotty - Continue to play it safe. Don't do like Pia. You may want to try a cowboy hat, boots or some other clothing item that'll convince the voters you are the country choice for this year's AI.

Lauren - Continue to be clueless - you didn't even know what complement meant. But that's your draw besides being country.
You'd better break out more country garb because you're in a dog fight with Scotty for the country vote this week.

James - If it ain't broke don't fix it. Stay the course.

Here's my ranking of the Top 5's performances.
The lowest score is the best:

James Song 1 6
Song 2 1

Jacob Song 1 10
Song 2 3

Lauren Song 1 4
Song 2 9

Scotty Song 1 7
Song 2 8

Haley Song 1 5
Song 2 2

So James held on IMO despite an excellent
attempt by Haley to top him.
Jacob made a bad song choice for his 1st song
but came back on Song 2.
Lauren sang her 1st song well but used a song
Simon Cowell mentioned in an X Factor
interview as a song he'd least like to hear for
her second song. Unchained Melody is overused
and in Lauren's case showed that she couldn't hit
the high notes with any power. This is one song
that an excellent singer would use to show off
their talent. Yet Lauren couldn't and didn't – and
none of the judges called her on it. Yet they went
after Haley for doing a lesser known Lady Gaga
song that she nailed. By their comments, Randy and
JLo would have us believe that we can't connect
with a song unless its been in regular rotation on
commercial radio at some point in time. Shame on
you, Randy & JLo for assuming that we're all sheep
to be controlled by the mass marketing firms with
which you do business.
Have the producers now picked Lauren over Haley?
Also I noticed that JLo didn't make any attempt to
influence ones to vote for the girls. My guess is that
the producers want Jacob & Haley gone and want to
see who gets the country vote between Scotty and
Lauren. However...
Scotty's 1st rocked only because the 2 Blondes were
backing him. The 2nd song was just boring.

Man, I didn't know it would be so hard to type with only one testicle:-(

The judges seem to be either be deaf, imbiciles or scripted, 'cause I'm just not hearing the same things they are, especially ripping on Haley for her first song choice, for still fawning all over One Trick Ponyboy & for not calling out Lauren for not hitting the "money note" on Unchained Melody....Sheesh....

I'm on my way to the pawn shop now to buy some disposable TVs to throw bricks through.

Midnite. You may want to take care of the testicle problem first. That's more important than getting the TVs.

Thanks for the concern Summeoyo. Hopefully you were joking, but just in case you missed this earlier post of mine. Don't wantcha worryin':-)

My only real regret last night was that Haley didn't follow your fashion advise.

Round 1: Contemporary

James Durbin, "30 Seconds to Mars."
Concert ready performer- just what he has been doing for the last 4 weeks.

Jacob Lusk, "No Air." No good. This guy does not know when he is good and when he is bad and that is BAD. It was a terrible song choices for many reasons, not least of which is that it is a duet! It came across as a bad 2-for-1 ad. Look at me, I am so good I can do the girls and the boys part!

Lauren Alaina, "Flat on the Floor." I don't think she did herself any favors doing a former AI winner's song. All the talent has now been coached out of her. All that's left is a mockery of her natural self.

Scotty McCreery
: "Gone." the Montgomery Gentry original is 100% better but he did OK

Haley Reinhart: "You and I," a song Lady Gaga performs in concert but has not released. It was probably a mistake to do a song that nobody has heard. Sometimes her voice disappears- what is that all about?

Round 2: Classics from the 60s and 70s

James Durbin, "Without You." Very nice until he hit the power notes. Had he hit a few and then brought the song back down to Earth, I would have been with him all the way, but he stayed up there in thin air until his oxygen was all gone.

Jacob Lusk, "Love Hurts." This was almost beautiful until he started thinking about how he had to scream his way into the finals. All he did was to scream himself into tonight's elimination.

Lauren Alaina, "Unchained Melody." This was the nail in the coffin for her chances to win it all. This song was the definition of SAFE. The judges didn't know what to say because they just heard a robot sing in place of the girl who used to be Lauren Alaina.

Scotty McCreery, "Always on My Mind." this wasn't Elvis. this was Willie and he sang it pretty convincingly. He added 20 years to his 16 years while he was singing- that's good acting. He showed that he knew what the song was all about. And I will repeat what my wife says about him. "I always understand every word he says". Yes, half of you probably think he is a light weight but I would put good money on him to be the male equivalent of Carrie Underwood- and that means song pitch opportunities for those of us who write Country music.

Haley Reinhart, "The House of the Rising Sun." The right decision to start her off singing without accompaniment. It punctuated the drama of the powerful lyrics and melody of the classic. I thought it was the best overall performance of the night.

Who goes home?- that's easy- Jacob. But I don't think he realizes it yet. I think he thought he did great because the judges are afraid to be honest.

Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah Jacob is gone-on-on.
Was anybody surprised? Lauren's reaction to Jimmy Iovine's comments showed me that she's thrown in the towel. She's choking and probably will be next to leave - although a percent of voters could give her some pity votes. Haley on the other hand is a competitor - which should serve her well in trying to carve out a career in music for herself.
Joe, I've found pitch opportunities for former idol contestants either on Hitquarters or Songquarters(I forget which - but they're sister websites).
It's going to come down to song choice - which is common in my experience with karaoke type contests(which like it or not AI is). Scotty needs to choose uptempo songs with which he can use the 2 blondes to create a party atmosphere because if James can hold it together, he'll come back with the rock show. Haley has found what works for her - combining a lesser known song that she can make her own along with a hit that she can have arranged to suit her style. Forget Randy and JLo's comment on using only well known songs. Jimmy was right for getting Haley to use Lady Gaga's song.
He's just going to have to find a least one two more of such songs for Haley.

It may be too late to coach Lauren back to her natural self. I think she may be too young to stand upright in all the strong hot air that blows on her. She has been my favorite talent since the top 24 and I still love her voice. But the last two weeks she seems to have, like summeoyo said "thrown in the towel" She took being in the bottom 2 very hard. If she can call home this week and remember who she is, she might be able to avoid the cut next week.

I think the only one who can withstand a less that stellar performance next week is James. I believe he is the only contestant who has never been on the bottom in any week. Scotty was in the bottom 3 when there were 6 left. Lauren was in the bottom this week and Haley has been a hairs breath from elimination a couple of times.

Curiously, I think the two people who have the strongest internal confidence is Scotty and Haley. James and Lauren are emotionally very similar and are at the edge of their emotions.

Lauren, Scotty and James have careers ahead of them no matter what happens. Haley may or may not depending upon how she finishes.
