Another one coming along slowly

Well everyone needs something to get them through the rough days.

For me it's my Ole Guitar.
I haven't been playing long and I'm not that good but I go nowhere without it by my side.

This song depicts a typical weekend
for me and my ole guitar. crazy

If the song is too long, blame Dylan, for writing "You gotta serve somebody", which I personally think is too short. That song could have gone on for ever... I just love it... One of my all time favs. cool

BTW at the beginning of the song, Radio station changing, is first, me acting out a skit I wrote just for this project and two of my songs. "It's gonna be all right" and "Blue Sky"

Thanks Folks

Fantastic story! I loved all of the verses and the way they so smoothly led directly to your very catchy chorus. I also loved the inclusion of the Pied Piper in the chorus (very clever)and the whole notion that the singer plays to not only set himself free, but everyone else he encounters as well. The Dylan influence in this one is unmistakable but it also stands very nicely and uniquely on it's own. As for the length, I'm a pretty wordy guy myself so I didn't see any problem with it. You're telling a story here and songs like this often require a little more time to completely flesh them out. I loved it.

Mr. Nelson, What a great story-song, just like watching a movie. The dynamics of the music carried me along as you spun your pied piper tale. I felt like I was surfin' the big ones at Wakiki. The phrasing was impeccable, just what I've come to expect from a Mr. Nelson song. And the way you built each verse leading to the climatic "old guitar" payoff is the definition of a great hook.

Masterful performance once again.

Nelson,
I love the opening skit - very artistic idea and cool. I love the production and all the unique sounds. I like the story. I guess if I had any suggestions, I might suggest that you reach a little higher from a melody perspective through the chorus to make it stand out even more, I think it could be yet another killer song from Mr. Nelson. I can almost hear trumpet in this one too???!!! Something brass...I love your stuff -a s I have told you many times before.....

Great song Nelson and it's not too long i could listen to
your vocals all day, the little stories like chapters
in the bigger story of the guitar works well and you deliver
it all brilliantly, great work,

Tony.

Hey Bobby
Glad you liked it and picked on my little nuances.

Very helpful information to my creative process.

I love wordy if the story's good. smile

I think that's why I'm in a perpetual state of rewrites... because I'm always comparing my work to Mr. Dylan and of course that's a no win battle, but it keeps me working hard and dreaming. laugh

Hey Dan
Thanks for giving it a spin.
Pipe piper, what was I thinking?
Sometime the craziness of some of the things I write, doesn't dawn on me until I'm about to make it public. smirk

Thanks Calvin

Hey Tracy
Thank you for stopping by.

I've been taking it really slow, learning different aspects of songwriting.
Though I haven't mastered any part of it, I have some grasp of lyrics, basic arrangements and non challenging vocals.
Now it's about time to get a better understanding of creating melodies.
So we'll have to find some time to chat and I'll like to pick your brain on the subject.

Let me know when you're free.
I'm afraid you'll have to wear your basic melody 101, hat. smile

Tony
Glad you liked it.
This one was definitely fun to write.
Certain songs I write resemble a book of short stories.
Though not often successful, The idea is to write verses that on their own, could become an interesting story or song.

I read the other day, some songwriting guru, said if you want to be a successful songwriter never write a 3rd verse... do this or that instead...and I thought, man am I in trouble. laugh

Tammy
U R such a dear.
Thank you for always being so supportive.

BTW Tammy can you feel that?
The creative winds blowing over you since you introduced music into you creative process. It is wonderful to witness. I hear growth with every collab and duet you do and your confidence come through in your vocals. Keep it up

Hi Nelson,

For some reason I can't get the songs on reverbnation to play anymore. If you can post a link directly to the song it will play though, or if someone can. I have no idea why it's not working, it was working two weeks ago!

I've got nothing to show for my music as far as popularity and financial compensation, so I am not sure what my advice is worth, but I know a good sound when I hear it.
All I can tell you is not to think too hard! Your voice is unique and captivating. You don't need to reach too far to get the listeners attention. Your approach to melody is unique as well and the way you place your lyric is great. You have a natural talent for songwriting and singing. You are in a great place where you are. It is possible to get too much advice and ruin a good thing. Go with your gut on these songs because you are on a great path. Focus on structure and think outside the box for some dynamic change ups. I know you are not in a hurry, but I can hardly wait for your CD to come out! I am more than happy to help you out, or at least share with you what I might hear in a particular spot from a melodic standpoint. Send me a PM when you are ready. Another thought for your chorus on this song is to add some really cool female harmony parts behind you, that alone might do the trick. Lots of possibilities.

Tracy

Well I think you play pretty well -- or is it that you play musically? ... and playing musically always wins out over technical skill. You also have a talent for arrangement.

You voice is easy to listen to, sounds real good. Now Ott is always telling me that I am way too nice and I need to find at least one thing to complain about (ha, ha) -- so here it is for this one ... hmmm, .... er .... this is tough ... Whew I got one! The "pied piper spreading seeds" is an interesting mixed-metaphor. However, it is a really cool use of alliteration, so I wouldn't suggest changing it. (LOL -- I crack me up).

Thank you Tracy
I couldn't care less about your sales numbers.
I've heard your music and that's all I need.

Don't forget you're talking to a guy who doesn't really care what the listener thinks, they want to hear.

I believe if you create something unique and interesting enough they will come. I haven't proven it so but we'll see.

Don't worry about me letting too many opinions seep into my creative process.
I assure you, I have the creative constitution of a very stubborn songwriter. bite
Often what I take from a review of my work, is not the obvious point of reviewer. There are certain things I look for in the review, that I suppose I could ask for in the original post but it's more helpful if info comes about... more organically.

Chat with you soon.

PS. I agree with the female harmony. I usually hear female harmonies in my head but usually just throw my self in there just to get a idea of how it will feel.

Dang. I like this one too. The lyrics keep mind mind moving right through the story. Great vocals. I like the light production, because it doesn't kill the sweet vox. Little weak on the chorus. I would keep the verses straight, but go melodic on the chorus, the way the best rappers do. That would make this song seriously rock.

I love the way you tell a story. Too much time in that White Freightliner, must get your mind wandering?

Keep it up, Nelson. You da man.

Hey Kevin
Good call on the chorus.
I was concentrating so much on the percussion.
The vocals fall a bit flat.
I running a few ideas around in my head.

Tracy mentioned female back up harmonies and got me to thinking.
maybe I'll do the chorus in that rocking Ray Charles type vibe.

It'll be another occasion to take another baby step toward strengthening my vocals, over all.

I'll let the ideas and suggestions marinate for a bit.

Pleased to meet you and thanks for stopping by giving the song a spin.
I'll have to check out "Slow Train". I just read through the lyrics and Damn it man, he's right on point as usual... and I feel more like a hack crazy ... Oh well, back to the drawing board. smile smile
