Larry V. wrapped a tune around this lyric that Janice and I penned awhile back. Please let us know what you think.

Brick by Brick
© 2010 Janice Hopkins, Greg C. Brown, Larry Vannatta

Grandpa Foley turned 90 last May,
The family all came out to celebrate.
Most of his years had all been kind,
His feet were moving slowly, but not his mind.

He started working at an early age,
Forty-one years in the building trade.
Concrete, mortar, hard work and sweat;
He couldn’t look back on a single regret

He told me, you know you’re nearly grown
You’ll soon be leaving your momma and home
So…

CHORUS
Build your place in this world,
Call it your own,
Brick by brick
And stone by stone.
Use two steady hands ‘til the pieces fit,
Add a little love just to make it stick.
And build a life worth living
Brick by brick.

I listened closely but I was so young
Didn’t know then what I'd become.
But at 18 years, he gave me a clue,
Said life’s made up of what you’re willin’ to do.

His good advice spun around in my head,
I never forgot the words that he said.

REPEAT CHORUS

BRIDGE
When I got word that Grandpa’d passed away,
I knew he’d earned his bonus at last.
Things aren’t created in the blink of an eye,
It’s the slow, forward steps that make a life.
Like he told me that time…..

CHORUS
Build your place in this world,
Call it your own,
Brick by brick
And stone by stone.
Use two steady hands ‘til the pieces fit,
Add a little love just to make it stick.
And build a life worth living
Brick by brick.
And build a life worth living,
Brick by brick.

Hi Greg And Jan,

Hey I'm surprised there aren't a lot more hits on this one. I loved it. LArry did his usual great take on the lyrics. I couldn't find a nit in the lyrics and the melody is a real catchy one. Great storyline that we all can relate to for sure. Young, old, rich poor--it's what we're all tryin to do. nice job,
Roger

YOUALL--

I've lived long enough to appreciate the truth, and ideas behind this song--THIS IS A FINE-TUNED PRODUCTION, I enjoyed it enough to listen TWICE--

WRITE ON and GOOD LUCK!

Happy Belated Birthday Greg!

Nice group effort with this song. The writing is really tight, the mellow music fits the lyrics well and the production is well done. I like it.

Lots of solid writing in this one. I especially love the first verse which sets the table for this song beautifully and leads smoothly into the equally strong message of the chorus. I also liked the immaculate arrangement of the song and the lower end of the vocals. Wow! That's one of the better bass voices I've heard in awhile. This song has a great message and a ton of potential and I wish you luck with it.

I'll admit something here. I often listen to my local country station. I also very often switch to the next station, 'cause what I hear is frquently "not to my taste". My immediate reaction here was, "Why isn't a song like this on the radio?" I thought it very well done, excellent singing.

Hi Greg, Janice and Larry,

What a real; nice song. I loved it all. If it was mine I would be 100% happy on it.

Still not sure if I like your new avatar Greg or the old one better lol.

God Bless Roy and Helen

Thanks for your kind and supportive words. We're thrilled you like this.

Thanks for taking a few minutes of your time to give our song a listen. I hope it was worth the 3 - 4 minutes you gave up.

This is the old country stuff I used to listen to. Good story & the production fits everything nice. Everything I hear on the country station nowadays sounds like noise. Just about anyone can put on some skin tight leather pants, shake their butt around on the stage, and make a bunch of noise. We need to hear more good tunes like this, with classic American country sound, and good lyrics to boot.

Greg & Janice, Just listened to your latest. Straight forward lyrics and a full production highlight this salute to the common sense wisdom of the working man.

I had an uncle who was a bricklayer. Made me think of him.

I notice others hear this as an old time country song. I'm not so sure. It has an old-style arrangement. But the formula sounds like what they use in Nashville today and with a more modern arrangement I think it would be right down main street Nashville and could be slipped into last year's or next month's radio playlist.

My only suggestion is that Greg get rid of that awful avatar. It's hideous.

Write from your heart, not what you think others want to hear.

Dan....."Last year's or next month's radio playlist?" Well, now that has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

Thanks so very much for giving this one a listen for us. We're glad that it meets with favor on your part. That is so appreciated. We will give that newer arrangement idea, a thought. Then we would have two versions to pitch.

Thanks Dan,

Hi Greg and gang

Nice work! Sounded good. Some effective stuff going on in there.
In a pitching situation I would consider that it has a 60's feeling to it. Like a Peter Paul & Mary vibe, a bit of Creedence or some British pop groups of that time.

While it has some Country elements it still has the that more vintage way about it in song style, sound and performance.
All those things would hurt you if that was a plan or goal for this one.

Other than that it was an enjoyable song smile

All the best you guys
Mike

Thanks!
Peace Mike

Hi--Greg/Janice/Larry

This is a job well done.
If I heard it on the radio, I'd be folling right along with it.
Good delivery of the song & I really like this....

Calvin...hope all is well in the great state of Fla. It's been five years now, since I lived there for Winter's for the sake of the "mouse".

Thanks so much for giving this a listen for us. We're glad that you enjoyed it....and we appreciate your comments so much.

Hi Tom, how are you? Thanks for giving this one a few minutes of your time. We enjoyed working on it and are thrilled that it seems to be going over well with folks.

We appreciate your visit and feedback. Much appreciated.

Really nice job on this one all y'all. I can tell a lot of TLC went into it.

(Heya Greg!)

Cheers,
