First of all, thanks be to Joice, Linda, Ricki, Tammy, Wendy and my wife, Gwen, for doing the backing vocals on this. Much appreciated, ladies. smile

Thanks Be To You is here:

I'll put the lyric below. Any comments and suggestions on any aspect are appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

Thanks Be To You
(C) 2010 by SW Campbell

If you ever saw me humbled and didn’t offer me your hand
Because you saw in me the strength to carry through
And if you ever let me stumble because you knew that I would stand
Oooooo, Thanks be to you

If you ever saw me act unwisely and didn’t offer me relief
When I had to face the reckoning that came due
And if you ever criticized me when to do so brought you grief
Oooooo, Thanks be to you

Thanks be to you
Thanks be to you
Thanks be to you
Thanks be to you

(Instrumental verse)

Thanks be to you
Thanks be to you
Thanks be to you
Thanks be to you

If you ever said goodbye to me, though you wished for me to stay
Because you knew I had some walking left to do
And if you smiled through the lie to me as you kissed me on my way
Oooooo, Thanks be to you

Thanks be to you
Thanks be to you
Thanks be to you
Thanks be to you

Thanks be to you

I was blindsided. You got the best backing vocals that anyone can find hanging around the boards. An amazing project to pull off... and the song was great too.

I have to confess I already heard the bootleg version (ha, ha). Love the production and in my opinion you are the #1 writer here at JPF -- and this one just solidifies your reputation.

Scott and all,
Really nice song. Lyrics and sound spot on.
If you'd said Dylan wrote it I would have believed you.

Hey Scott...

Nice...you embraced the hook with both arms and didn't let go.
(I hope that makes sense).
Great backing vocals...you chose well.

You're telling me, Ben... smile

I had reservations about asking so many talented singers to join in - I don't know, the song just didn't seem worthy of it.

But I wanted to give a shot at getting what I was hearing in my head - so I'm glad I asked all of them. And even gladder that they agreed smile

Thanks,
Scott

Man, I don't know how to even respond to that, Kevin - as it is pretty far removed from my own self-assessment smile

So I'll simply say thank-you. smile

P.S. Believe it or not, the inspiration for this came as I was reading through the "compilation thread" at the end of December.

Hi Scott,

Another Scott Campbell classic. I agree with Kevin. You represent the best among us all here. My only nit is I would have liked to hear more of the gals, especially singing in harmony rather than in unison on their individual parts but I know that would present it's own problems logistically doing so over the Internet. Still another great song. Congratulations are in order once again.

Thanks Caroline. Not 100% sure I'm not ripping someone off - I get that feeling whenever something comes easy. The music, hook, and basic idea behind the song came real fast. I will admit to struggling a bit over the verse lyrics, trying to say what I wanted and still keep those infernal internal rhymes. smile

Thanks again for the nice words. smile

I've not been playing on the boards for a while but had to take a listen to a track that's got this much talent involved in it. Outstanding simply outstanding!

Amazing production and the girls are amazing. Well done guys!

Hi Scott,

This was great fun and like I told you, I never get to play with the cool kids, so it was quite a treat. And what a great song.

Smooth production. Congrats to the female choir!

So often the best way to help people is not to help them. It takes a wise man to know when and when not to give support. That's what I got out of your lyrics Scott. Very meaningful lyrics! Two thumbs up.

I'd add a tad more reverb on the lead vocal.

Best, John smile

My only nit is I would have liked to hear more of the gals, especially singing in harmony rather than in unison on their individual parts but I know that would present it's own problems logistically doing so over the Internet. Still another great song. Congratulations are in order once again.

Stevie

Thanks Stevie smile

As I've told you, I often wish I could write more like you. smile

I might have to revisit the mix on this. Of the 8 female vocal tracks (some sent two tracks) I believe only two track the melody at that point. The others are singing harmony.

Was a tricky thing to mix - but I enjoyed every minute of it smile

Thanks Pal,
Scott

Good stuff Scott!
Your voice fits so well with this style of music and the offsetting female vocals are great! Thanks be to you...for posting this song.

Stevie, does the term "herding cats" come to mind? smile

Ricki

LOL - I herd cats frequently - or, rather, try to. You were much easier than that grin

I never got to play with the cool kids either - till I found JPF smile

Thanks for singing along, Ricki.

So often the best way to help people is not to help them. It takes a wise man to know when and when not to give support. That's what I got out of your lyrics Scott. Very meaningful lyrics! Two thumbs up.

I'd add a tad more reverb on the lead vocal.

Best, John smile

Thanks John! I'll experiment with adding a little more reverb.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I had in mind. I wanted the last verse to put a little spin on it. Yes, he's thanking people for acting (or not acting) in such a way as to make him a better person - but he also is thanking them because he knew it was hard for them to do that... smile

Appreciate the listen and suggestion, John.

Hi Ott:

The first thought that popped into my mind was Thank-you. Wasn't but a minute before it got modified. I think it might be because my wife and I have been spending time with a friend who is just learning English smile

There are a few songs with "Thanks Be To You" as the title - but I haven't found any yet that bear any resemblance to this one.

Thanks Ott smile

Scott, I hadn't noticed the new version with the Shirelles singing backup but they did a nice supporting the song! I raved about it when you first posted it and I see no reason to change my opinon now. A superlative performance of a well-written song.

LOL - I did what I was too chicken to do in High School. I asked smile

Yeah, I started with the 70's, worked back to the 60's, then took a jump to the 20's. I'd do the 40's next but I don't have a big band. smile

Thanks Pal - your spirit is in this song - the way you are kind to people but still have a way of telling them what they need to do to get better.

Scott,
This is awesome. I love it! it sounds like it came right off of one of Dylan's cds. I love the lyrics and the laid back groove. Really, really nice - a favorite of mine.

Thanks Tracy smile

I will admit that I always wanted to write a song in the vein of Forever Young or Let it Be - where the chorus is mostly or entirely a repetition of the hook. Not that I'm comparing this to those - just indicating the influences smile

Glad you like smile
