This song wrote itself over a period of a quarter century. A guy I used to work with long ago and I would "Day-O." He would sing a line and we'd sing Day-o, Day-o bread (which of course is a take off of day old bread.) Then I'd make up a line and so on. It was great fun. I took it a big step further with this song but it all had it's genesis long ago. Sing along with me on the Day-O part if you will. Sing it loud so people around you will wonder what the hell you're doing. And a one, and a two, and a.......

Day-O Bread

Well I wake up dis morning with a beeg headache (singing day-o, day-o bread)
I lie here in bed and look out at de rain (singing day-o, day-o bread)
Well me either get drunk or me must be insane
there an ugly girl beside me and I don't know her name
Now de sun come up and she won't go away (singing day-o, day-o, day-o bread)

Singing (Day-o, Day-o)
Sing it long ( Day-o, Day-o)
Sing it loud ( Day-o, Day-o)
Sing it proud (day-o, day-o, day-o bread)

Avis my dog, my love never ceases (singing day-o, day-o bread)
She one of de neighborhood favorite beeches (singing day-o, day-o bread)
So I take her to de animal doctor who feexes
No more litters of mongrel meexes
Cause Avis ain't got no feminine pieces (singing day-o, day-o, day-o bread)

Singing (Day-o, Day-o)
Sing it long ( Day-o, Day-o)
Sing it loud ( Day-o, Day-o)
Sing it proud (day-o, day-o, day-o bread)

Oh I could sing Day-o all day long (singing day-o, day-o bread)
I wish dey sing Day-o in every song (singing day-o, day-o bread)
But it hard to get right and it easy get wrong
Cause you got to put de rhyme just where it belong
But I can sing Day-o to de........Vietcong (singing day-o, day-o, day-o bread)

Singing (Day-o, Day-o)
Sing it long ( Day-o, Day-o)
Sing it loud ( Day-o, Day-o)
Sing it proud (day-o, day-o, day-o bread)

this is great. I like the dog verse. Beeches. Ha.

You have a very cool style of writing. Do you work from your music or from your lyrics?

Stevie,

I love the music. It's got a cool Island flavor going. Even if I'm not quit sure what Day-o bread is! LOL!

HIDee Brother Stevie!

Hard to think how long ago "Daylight come, and me want go home/Day-O" (The Banana Boat Song)..made Henry Belafonte into a Star!

I agree..the Dog Verse is certainly Star-Quality~!

Good Luck with this Fun One, Amigo~

Thanks Dan,

As far as my songwriting work habits, it all begins differently. I almost never have a full lyric before music but sometimes a chorus or verse comes into view and then the music. Then I finish the lyric. Sometimes it's music all the way through and then I have to piece the puzzle together lyrically.

This one came together except for the last verse and chorus which were added years later. Hope that helps.

Thanks Tom Day-o Bread is just a play on words for Day Old Bread. That's part of the joke of the song...or at least it's supposed to be.

Yeah, Scott. I'm currently working on three more simultaneously. I've got the tunes but am working on the lyrics, back and forth. Have to see which one gets done first. I've got 35 tunes that need lyrics so I've got enough to keep me busy. Thanks for stopping by.

Stevie,
This song is fun and I like the feel of the island music! Got some Day-O before I head to work today so we'll see what happens! Really funny lyrics (poor dog!)

Man Stevie, I think this may be your thing. Next thing I know you will have comedy musical act in Branson.

Hey you could call it "Day-o-bread".

Yah I can see it growing. Just like the "dead-heads" there would be the day-o-bread heads. Are you seeing it?

It was a fun song to listen to and it was well done.

Doug

Hey Doug,

Day-o bread heads, huh? That's pretty funny itself. Glad you like the song and got a chuckle out of it. Yeah, the humorous songs I've done are some of the most popular but man, it's hard to stay funny all the time. Every once in awhile something comes to me but that's it. Thanks for the supreme compliment.
