BRACE YOURSELVES!!!Acapella girl got an autoharp for Christmas, this is my first song I have written music to...yes, it is simple, but it is mine and I am very proud. Now, you must endure me trying to sing and play at the same time! SPECIAL THANKS to JOICE...you have believed in me more than I believed in myself and I dedicate my first song to you...thank you. More Special Thank You's to the bruised and battered Vic, Andy, Ben and Rod who all endured getting my practice recordings in e-mails since Christmas and to all musicians who gave me chords to my songs...thanks!! ON THE MERRY-GO-ROUND on SoundClick On The Merry-Go-Round By Tammy © 2011 Up and down, round and round my horse and I go dancing. Up and down, round and round my horse and I go prancing. Tammy, YOUR FIRST SONG!!! Great start! The song is full of the innocence of childhood. Now that you have finished the first song that is all your own, you are about to embark on a great songwriting journey. Enjoy the trip!

Congrats on your first song. Simple, yes, but kids love simple songs. I could hear them following and singing this after just a few listens. It's got that "bouncy" feeling like they were jumping up and down. A co writer and I (She did most of the work :), have two children's albums out that have done quite well and you're right on track to write children's songs--an often overlooked field Wy

Ahhh,Tammy, This song takes me back about 20 years. Was it 20 years? I can't recall. I can just imagine us kids skipping around as Wyman said. Do I also detect an improvement in the recording quality? Vic

Tammy,
My 9 year old daughter sang background vocals on a children's disc done by Debbie Clement You can find her on the internet. She has been quite successful in what she does. This song that you have written fits in really nicely with the stuff that she does. It is melodic and sweet and I think children would really like it. I could ask her if she ever considers songs from other writers. She only writes lyrics herself and hires a friend of mine to do the melodies. You never know, she may want to hear it. Let me know if you want me to follow up. Nice job.

Dan,
Thank you, your post made me feel really good!! I sang this to my son while he was in the bathtub after his very first ride on the Merry-Go-Round at our mall. He seems to like it and bounces up and down, but mostly when it plays on the computer and he doesn't see my lips move...My children are NOT my greatest fans!!!LOL!!

Tammy, I love the delicate side of you. (Not to be taken the wrong way, lol) I have young(er) kids and they all have friends. Some of the places the friends live always have that style stuff on in their rooms. So I know it fits...and it's really good. Kids love carousels.
THE HIGHLIGHT: THIS SONG GIVES KIDS AN ACTION TO DO, TOO! The chorus imparticular. Now that we can hear your music, how you hear it, I'm super excited. I never wanted to try and guess... bet you get a lot more collab requests! lol
Good stuff.
I have music for all of my songs and they vary from rock to country to folk and everywhere in between. (except rap)

You told me the brand of autoharp that you use. It's pretty expensive. Would you consider trading it for a nice guitar?
Autoharp is a fine instrument, but I think the guitar fits you better. You already know key's, chords, etc. Now play them on the guitar.
Please don't take what I said wrong. I can see that you learn music fast. Borrow a guitar if you have to, but don't be dependant on the autoharp.

Tracy,
I am glad you liked the song, I've noticed it goes over with parents better than folks without kids. Thank you for the offer, it would be nice to connect with someone like that to talk to them and get perspective on writing Children's songs. I am working with someone on another board to get music for this and will see where it goes from there, but thanks for the idea!!

Excellent Tammy. Whatever Joice did to inspire you certainly worked. It seemed alittle short (probably because I wanted to hear more) but maybe for young children that's good, since keeping it short and sweet might help them sing along easier. Best, Lynn

Tammy--
Great START GIRL--The feedback will help you get better and better.
Believe it or not, This Old Guy was once in a RHYTHM BAND--I played a comb and wax paper. Simplicity in music arrangement can be powerful--a single instrument and the voice--NICE!
A STAR IS BORN--

Wow, short and sweet, but very nicely done. Keep working on this one.
One small thought I had was that a merry-go-round doesn't have an "other side" so that line threw me off a bit. I'd think it'd be something more like "Come let's race 'round and 'round/my horse and I go up and down" although it's a shame to lose the "fly" imagery.

Tammy, Really cool kids song! I could see that being sung at maybe a pre-school or kinder class right along with other traditionals. Perfect legnth too. I don't know if you read my other reply to you but I grew up in Corvallis. Graduated HS in '87. Go Beavs! Ricky

Hiya!! Hey an instrument!!! Oh man! I had an autoharp as a kid, I LOVED that dumb thing, it's fun to hear one again. And hellOOOooo. An autoharp is WAY easier to pick up than a guitar. Let her be for a while, it's a great choice!! I had that thing Mastered by age 5 and I tell ya... I still can't play guitar. LOL OK it's a great fun song Tams, I can see little kids bouncing around to it and playing. Mine are a little old now but the preschool set - yes yes. Keep going! And while I'm here let me ask if you can be Tricksy on that Tascam of yours - will it run 2 tracks? If so you can record your autoharp part first. Then plug phones in so you can hear the autoharp and voice-over the vocals. Many of us record this way - many/most pros too -- sometimes will do straight-on "live" tracks but usually it's a build of one or a couple instruments at a time layering as you go. Your recorder should do it - check your instruction manual & see? Then you don't HAVE to sing and play at once -- until you go live on stage Linda

I enjoyed reading it and I do like the folky feel you have. It's very 60's. I do wish you sounded happier when you sang it though. If you record it again, try and sing with a happier, brighter voice. With the round and round and up and down of a merry go round horse there's a big opportunity in this song to make it interactive with any children you might play it for. I think you would be doing the song a favor if removed your bridge altogether and replaced it with something simple and repetative like: round and round and up and down on the merry go round round and round and up and down on the merry go round The repetative lines are easy for them to remember and they allow you to get the children physically involved in the song by having them perform those actions - round and round, up and down. Smaller children love action songs. You can do the actions too. It's good exercise. Anyway, just an idea.

Ant,
I understand, but I grew up in Pittsburgh with one of the historical carousels...the other side was the other side of the music in the middle. We always refered to it as the "other side, and we could never get there, an endless race, sounds like kid fun and dreams...that is what I was intending.

Tammy, Congrats pn a wonderful kid's song! I used to work at an early learning center. They would have loved it! I wrote a song and played the autoharp with it for a share the fun show in 4-H...must have been around 9 yrs.old.I loved the instrument. I'll have to ask my mom what happened to it. I loved this! As always, your vocals are beautiful.
