Hello,
Relatively new to Just Plain folks. It was one of those sites that got lost in the mix. Looking to network with like minded folk. Trying to find my niche in the music industry without getting involved in the politics if that's possible. I write Lyrics and Poetry and now I'm seriously trying to get the music out of my head and on disc.

Hi...My name is Tracy. This looks like an interesting site. I have been writing and recording for a few years now, but am mostly a closet musician. I am at a point in my life where I would like to get more involved and hopefully meet some others who share my passion for the arts!

Wow, lots of new folks dropping in since I last checked this thread -- so hello to Tracy, realdazz, Lindy, Arianne, Mike, Mark, Doug, Jackie, .... and anyone else I missed. Looking forward to sampling your music demos in the MP3 Thread or reading your lyrics on one of the lyric boards (although, I don't hang out too much in lyric-land).
Again, welcome!

Welcome to all the new folks. Nice to see some from the recent newsletter. Settle in and you'll make friends and often it leads in all sorts of positive directions. Advice: Be less concerned with talent or genre and more with making real connections with real people. We have all sorts of folks here who do music as a hobby, but who have day jobs that can be of great help to any level of interest if you just open yourselves to it.
I also suggest using your own real name, it will build trust much faster than being anonymous where folks often don't want to spend time helping someone they don't know and how might be wasting their time. But it is not mandatory, so take your time and if/when you are ready, go into "My Stuff" and request a display name change. I have to approve them, but I try to get there every day to update them.
Welcome aboard everyone!

Tracy: I just play, write songs and sing (well, sort of sing). I am trying to get into the open mic/writer's night thing so I can see if I am writing songs that folks actually want to listen to (ha, ha). This place is a great place for the "closet musician".

Thanks for the venue, I have a few friends outside of here and have been a member for a while though not active, I enjoy writing lyrics that I post on my own website which you can find on my profile, I posted one called "Hombre" on lyric feedback and have shared hello's with a few of you, I'm a trucker and very busy with that but I'll be concentrating on J.P.F. when I'm home and looking forward to it.
Thanks for stopping by

Hello all I'm new to the site but excited to learn all I can from more experienced writers. I've only been writing for a couple of years and I truly love finding out that I have a talent, however small, for writing songs. I've had the rare experience of judging, teaching and performing dance internationally, so experience with musical phrasing, lyrical interpretation, etc. has been part of my life for more than 30 years. That experience has given me the confidence I needed to put my foot in the water of songwriting. I'm loving the friendships I've made and the excitement of learning new things. I'm glad to have this site to look to for guidance and plan to use it regularly. I welcome new friends and the offer of help from more experienced writers than myself. I do have one problem, I am not a singer, nor do I play an instrument, which leaves me completely out of any contests were performing is required, no matter how good the song might be. It seems to me there must be thousands of other writers who are in the same boat. So what do you recommend as an avenue for writers like me. I have someone who does sing and someone who makes a working demo with music for me, but I still have the same problem. Hope you will have some suggestions to help with this problem. Thanks again for this really great site. God Bless Southern Lady

Hi from Southwest Michigan!
My name is Yvonne Blasy, nickname "Blaise". I'm interested in connecting with other friendly people, anywhere but especially around the Great Lakes area, who share an interest in folk music and songwriting, and also fine art. My instruments are voice, guitar, piano [or keyboard], and Native American flute, and I write and perform mostly my own compositions. I'd like to connect for songwriting, and maybe start a songwriter's circle here in Southwest MI. A happy, harmonious New Year to all.

Hi Everyone, I'm Brenda. I have been away for a few years and have missed being here. I'm in my last semester of school, graduating in May so until then I may be sporadic at posting. I have 5 hard classes coming up and I am just praying I get through them so I can finally say I graduated from at least one college. I am looking forward to coming back to JPFolks on a full time and permanent basis. I can't wait to meet all of our new members and to connect with the old.
Dare to Dream! Brenda

Hi folks,
My name is Tim. I'm kind of a returning member, though I've always been more of a lurker than a poster. I am just now getting back into music, after being away from it for over a year. I have a 13 month old son at home, and that definitely re-arranged my priorities. He goes to bed early now, so I've been carving out a few hours every night to dream about writing/composing for film and tv, and finishing all those half-written songs sitting in the metaphorical pile in my brain.
Anyways, I look forward to participating, and making new friends. Best wishes to you.

Hi everybody!
Haven't been here in a long time so I figured I might reintroduce myself. Don't know why I havn't spent more time here really. These forums seem like one of the few places online where people actually take the time to listen to eachothers music and help eachother out.
Anyhow, I'm an owl made from seashells or so it would seem. I make... Well, that's the tricky part, I don't really know how to describe the kind of music I make. I deliberately try to make music that does not fit into any particular genre; music that transcends description. I listen to all types of music and when I record a song I tend to incorporate elements from many different genres. Thus, a song can end up an amalgam of synthpop, folk-rock and dub-reggae (for example). Right now I'm doing my best to put a live show together using various instruments along with a loopstation I recently bought. Loads of work with that, but hopefully it'll turn out brilliant once I've practiced for about a million years!
Visit Wukimon on Facebook Or you can visit one of our many other pages. It's up to you really...

Greetings to all, Firs timer John Campoli here ,thanks for your help Brian, finally got through the wall of security. I from a small town and don't get out much so I don't get a chance to meet people in the craft and I am hoping to find some folks to collaborate with. Not sure how all this shtuff works yet but, I'm know it will begin to add up at some point. I've come to the conclusion that I spend far too much time on my lyrics and would probably save a bunch if I had some lyrics ready for music, that I'm fast at. I also hope to be of some help to others. If you like what you hear, send me a note. Thanks in advance. songjohn www.johncampoli.com

Hi...my name's Dave and I've been playing in a band (a couple of other guys and me in a basement) for twenty years or so...after we came somewhat up to speed on our instruments we mostly gave up covers for our own stuff...probably to the detriment of our musicianship (at least mine), but much more satisfying, at least for me...
Now I'm finding it tough to get the guys together very often...and am looking for a place to bounce some ideas off of others...and to provide my input, for what it's worth...and for an environment that might give me that little kick in the pants if I start being a bit too lazy on my own.
Thanks in advance for letting me try the place out.
Dave

Hi Dave,
Welcome to JPF. What inst. do you play? The drive to make music is what it's all about really... the rest is just business. So good for you to keep on going. Bands come and go but if music is in your blood, you have to keep going with it.

Thanks Brian.
I guess bands do come and go. But my bandmates are a couple of long term (20 plus year) friends--pretty much the only guys I'd played with...so the comfort level was high...we were all about creating songs though...besides the comaraderie, that's what drove us to get together...
We all started with guitar...and so before long I ran out and bought a bass...now I'm focussed on getting back up to snuff on the guitar to foster the solo songwriting.

Hi! My name is John Gaudet...new to JPF. Living in St. Petersburg, Fl for the past 14 years, from the Bayou lands of South Louisiana (a bit south of Baton Rouge). Looking to move to Nashville. Presently into my 3rd year as a member of Nashville Songwriters Association International. I'm a writer and musician, and I've made progress as a vocalist. I'm looking to improve my writing skills, possibly co-write....and heck shoot for the moon! Have up & coming artist and national artist record my songs and exposing myself to the 'world' (no, not that way). I do my own recording and play all instruments on my recordings except for drums (have problem with my hands....going to specialist today!) and I sing all the notes lead and background. Right now I can be found.....well here and; http://www.myspace.com/johngaudetmusichttp://www.facebook.com/JohnGaudetI hope to get some 'plain folks' to hear some of my songs and get some feedback. Look forward to a grand time.
John Gaudet

Welcome John! I started out with an NSAI membership many years ago. Make sure visit and spend quality time in Nashville, including at least a couple weeks without anyone holding your hand (i.e. without help from locals you already know or org. folks) to see what it will REALLY be like living there. See how comfy you are making new friends on your own, getting in doors you haven't had opened for you by others etc. Nashville is a great place, but I know a LOT of people who get infatuated but once in an irrevocable relationship (like marrying after a long weekend with a new boyfriend/girlfriend) and only then learning the real problems you're faced with.
Good luck and welcome aboard here,
Brian

Thanks for the advice Brian. Usually when I've visited in the past it's been meeting with a few locals I have met and mostly organizational folks. But just exploring and doing normal everyday stuff hasn't been on the 'to do' list. I think next visit I won't be doing the usual. But rather seeing how I would do without anyone 'holding my hand'. That's 'great' advice. Fortunately for me my wife is on board with moving there, she's the instigator here. I've always told my kids if there is something 'special' that you won't to do, you may need to go where it's done. My wife turned the table on me about 16 months ago and shortly thereafter we started planning. I work from home in healthcare and can take my job where ever I go....another plus. Thanks for the advice....looking forward to being involved with JPF! Peace and Love, John

Hi! I'm Kathi Cameron. I'm not so good with computers, but been playing and writing music for over 40 years. I played guitar first, then studied percussion in college, taught band/choir,classroom music for over 35 years until "forced" into early retirement 3 years ago (district shut down my middle school and me with it). I have played with community orchestras/bands, civil war era brass band, and an old timey string band (I play dulcimer) I fell in love with the Native American flute about 5 years ago and now that is my passion for music performance and writing. I have performed at flute festivals in NoCa and OR. The native cultures have always been a part of my life ; with my own ancestry, teaching on a reservation and taking native studies courses. It just seemed to make sense that when looking for a new home I settled here in north central Idaho within the Nez Perce reservation. I have already met JPF people even though I have had log -in and other computer tech. issues (my fault. I hope to meet many more! Kathi

Hi Kathi,
Welcome to JPF. We have been recognizing Native American music in our awards going back to 1998, so you are quite welcome and we look forward to you sharing your experiences. We're always looking for educational tricks of the trade to help others.

hi, my name is david and i am brand new to just plain folks. i am a song writer, occassional performer, and my goal is to connect with the great big music atm machine. the one where you stick your song in the appropriate slot and money comes out. now i know that machine exists somewhere, i was hoping someone here could, you know, point the way. i am also hoping for good humor and fellowship. i am an woefully ignorant and un sofisticated hillbilly and in fact many of my best songs were written in a two room cabin up in the allegeny hills of north central PA. i also have some aspirations regarding nashville and have actually visited there once a few years back. but it was not my time to be there so i turned right around and came back to pa.So thats my story and i'm sticking to it.
in friendship, david michael kissinger

Hi, everyone
I am new and came across your site and now a new member. It is hard to find co-writers here in Canada...did co-write with a fellow in TN but nothing happen with the song. And in the contract I asked a reversion after a year if nothing happend I get my lyrics back and he got his music.
Bit advice...in short should I retry this lyric - what do you think? Should I post it and see if anyone willing to co-write on it? Any help from the community is welcomed!!

Hey Folks,
I haven't been here for ages, I used to really enjoy being a part of the forum a couple of years ago, before life got in the way.
I'm now a full-time musician, I teach, play gigs, I do a bit of production work, I'm currently mixing a few artists' tracks and producing a few artists too.
I'm keen to participate and I like the community aspect of JPF.
Cheers Steve

Hi Steve,
Glad to have you back. If you remember your original user name I can combine that with your current one if you'd like.

Hi I am new to this site and hoping to find someone to record some of my songs. I have written maybe 40 songs or more and recorded 11 of them just over a year ago. Unfortunately I do not have enough time to pursue a career in the music business but I think my songs are good enough if takin on by the right person or persons. Here is a link to some of my work please feel free to contact me at garyoheaire@gmail.com http://www.showcaseyourmusic.com/garyoheaire.

Hi Gary,
Welcome to JPF. The reality of the music world today is that there are over a million people of all talent levels pursuing some type of success, including having their songs recorded by someone with the potential of making them popular/successful and of those 100's of thousands dedicate some or all of their time trying to make it. I'd guess there's at least 200,000 full time writers spending 100% of their time looking to get their song recorded and that includes thousands who have had one or more hits in their life already. That's who you are competing with. In addition, any success is mostly the result of who you know, who knows you, and a sense that you're paying your dues. I'd suggest (and just being honest here) that you NEVER introduce yourself as you have above to any other people you come across because you'll instantly discount yourself, and for the most part destroy any interest anyone would have in working with you. That is simply the hard truth. You might still be able to find amateurs or hobbyists to work with, but I wouldn't expect many people with any real drive to find commercial success to have interest in working with anyone who isn't equally dedicated to working hard and long to find success. Songwriters don't simply write songs and hand them off to people to do all the work no matter how good they are. Writing is the fun part, not the work part. And no one will be remotely as interested in your songs as you are and if you're not able to put the time in on you creations, it's highly unlikely anyone else will be either.
That said, we welcome all types of people who like to make music, from amateurs and hobbyists to Grammy winners, #1 writers and artists and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members. We have them all so my words above are not meant to scare you off, but rather give you a reality check so you can proceed with the facts.
Good luck,
Brian
