Oh, To Just Be Old

© -MFB III-A.Y.Studio-All rights reserved

Oh, that I could just be old,
and at long last done with it.

Snuggled down in my wrinkled, scarred, flesh,
in a bentwood rocker, watching sunsets on a porch,
just south of nowhere, beyond the insanity of yet.

Watching life spin onward without my contributions,
through eyes that blur its hard core edges.
In rumpled hair with toothless grin, every vanity forsaken.

Kids all grown up, and raised successfully,
all other droll duties complete
grandchildren softly giggling eighth notes
as they dance around my feet.

Holding hands with my best decision
who always was, and will always be
a love more comforting then an old, soft quilt,
or a June nap......... hammock bound,
or kisses that are planted gently on my fevered brow.

There we'll remain as sexy
as those first nights
we sang out passionate odes,
to our warm glowing honeymoon,
hung over endless paths yet traveled.

In flannel shirt, over brushed linen trousers,
my slippers flapping ancient rhythms
as we go creaking off to bed.

Oh, that I could just be old,
skipping all the toils ahead.

Dreams die so much harder when you're young,
hope spends years frayed at the seams.

Happy 2AM Bro MFB3!

Yeah, I can Identify with a lot of this...(Tho termites munched my Nice Antique Bentwood Rocker, so I can't rock in it until I do Major Restoration..someday when I get the time!)

Real glad my teeth are in Good Shape & my vision, with Glasses..is 20-20 so far! WISH we had those Grandkids..but it's outta MY hands..heh!

I MISS those "Washboard Abs", but the growing Fondness for Zinfandel & Amberbocks has resulted in my pinching-2-inches, currently, and "Being Old" lets me get away with it!

Got quite a kick outta the "Slippers flapping ancient rhythms" line..What a GEM!

There's a LOT to like here, Amigo. "Old" is alas, like a "4-letter-word"...the first time it applies to a recipient.

But..it becomes a comfier-shoe, the Older Ya Get..Trust me on that! Very Cool Couplet as ya wrap this baby up!

Congrats on a "Classic" ya got here! Good Luck with it!

Best Wishes & a Big Guy-Hug,

This one is the antithesis of the theory that most of us once they reach a certain age are looking for that fountain of youth. I have now reached the over 65 plateau and am doing fine, so far. Once wrote a piece about that. May recycle it here for comment.

In my memory:
I was a better athlete than I really was
I was better looking than I really was
The girls were more numerous than they really were
The girls were more gorgeous than they really were

But in my mind and in my stories, I was...and they were!

You must have my slippers on they flap around too. I also go up the stairs and wonder what I went up there for.
Great write and observation.

MFB, Wow. Very well written. It's reminiscent of Frost's "Stopping by Woods...". I'm glad you brought this forward for review. I look forward to hearing the music you have for it.

MFB, Frankly, I've never heard of song that looks longingly and lovingly at the prospect of old age. Sort of a reverse "Fountain of youth" song. Or a "make lemonaid out of lemons" song. But you've put the stamp of your personality and outloook on this unique idea. Write on as Mackie says!!!

Write from your heart, not what you think others want to hear.

Hi MFB. Nice piece.
I realised that my wardrobe has got a lot smaller these days,
jeans that used to hug your legs now seem to have extra space in the thigh area and you grunt when you bend.

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Very nice view of getting old. This is well-written and hopeful song. So many fight aging but this makes it seem much better! Good luck with it, my friend!

This is certainly a different view of getting old. I don't know how old you really are but for me, I went through a stage of saying "oh I'm starting to look so old" finally my sister-in-law looked at me one day and said "you are old". Funny thing is suddenly I accepted it, lol. No one had ever told me that, they would say "no you don't" but she let me have it straight!

This song reminded me of that I guess because I read acceptance in int.. It's very good as I've come to expect from you. smile
