OK, it's been awhile, but slumps happen. I needed to share this with those of you that are still listenin' to my tunes :-) Hope you like it - the recording is far from perfect. http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_5705046 A Few Clowns Short © 2010 Barry Crannell He’s a good ol’ feller – got him a wife She ain’t no cousin – but that’s alright She loves her man – that’s the truth Loves his banjo – loves his tooth He’s a few clowns short of a circus And her elevator don’t reach the top They’re a couple fries short of a Happy Meal But they’re happy with all they got Livin’ in a shack – down in the holler He’s a handy man – a home-grown scholar He built a privy – made for two With a crescent moon – and a river view Chorus Bridge Ain’t that some kinda genius? Ain’t that some kinda tough? Ain’t that some kinda livin’? Ain’t that some kinda love? Feelin’ pretty – she gives a wink In her union suit – all faded pink When the moon shines bright – they tip that jug Stoke that stove – stoke their love Chorus

Pretty fun little tune. It is hard to build a song around a cliche, but you did it here. You have a very nice sound going on -- I enjoyed it. Nice combo of instruments.

That was fun. Your voice and the humour in the lyric rather reminded me of Eels (a great band).

You got me hooked with the title. I'd never heard the expression "to be a few clowns short of a circus", and it's not even in the dictionaries that I use to use. Reading your lyrics I thought the expressions might mean something like "being poor" or "being rather simple and ordinary folk" - it worked for me nicely that way. And I really liked it. But then, I'd got it all wrong (I'm German, you know).
How and why the lyrics and the song should work with their correct meaning (a song about some moron - you see, I double-checked), I'm not quite sure. I've learned that they actually read: leave that stupid, poor folk in the gutter, they're happy there - that would be rather cynical. As nice as the song sounds I seem to cease to like it. (Nothing against the expressions themselves, I actually like them, my newfound favorite: "Has an IQ of 2, but it takes 3 to grunt").

Bernd,
I'm sorry that you didn't continue to like this, as the intent is very well-meaning. It's more of a commentary about the sometimes misguided nature of a lot of us that are NOT living that life, and only understanding that we never seem to have enough.
Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment - Barry

Barry,
I loved the lyric and music. Where were you when I used to live in Corvallis? Loved the vocal, great song!

There is someone for everyone in this world - you got that across in a humorous and even heartwarming fashion. Nice one, Barry.

Thanks Scott. I really tried not to cast a bad light on the two og them - glad you noticed. Good to see you're still at it.

Hi Barry,
This is such a charming tune! I enjoyed the light-hearted look at this quirky couple. It's enjoyable and fun!
Nice playin' and harmonies too.
