Hi Folks,
I'd like to know what your top 5 songs posted here so far in 2010. I haven't had much chance to hear stuff posted this year due to all the health issues, but now I'd really like to get a feel for which songs come up most often. Use whatever criteria you want, but list them for me with a link to the post where the song exists.
01. 02. 03. 04. 05.
I want to hear from at least 20 people. Once we hit at least 20, I will then ask for some help choosing the overall 5 favorites by adding up the highest vote getters. We'll give 5 points to the #1 song on your list down to 1 point for your 5th choice. No ties are allowed, nor incomplete lists. You must choose 5 and only 5.
Once we have the top 5 chosen by all of you, I'll reveal what happens next. (If we don't get at least 20 responses, then we'll just hold off for another time). I don't have a specific deadline, but sooner is better than later.
So let the fun begin... remember, anything first posted in 2010 is eligible.

There have been ~1000 posts in the MP3 since January 1st. I won't have time to try this out until I get back from my trip, but I am sure a Scott Campbell tune will show up somewhere.

Joice,
What I am going to do is to just breeze through the 1,000 posts or so and just write down the tunes that stood out -- I won't re-listen (unless the mood strikes me).
This is just a quick and dirty test to see what songs were memorable and/or moved you. I wouldn't worry about being incredibly accurate or leaving any one out.
That's what I am going to do when I get back. Since you can only pick 5, you are going to leave quite a few good ones off your list.

Joice,
I am going to have to delete all that text. Magne and Randy did this perfectly (sorry to all who didn't understand my instructions) so please follow their lead. I don't want lyrics, just the 5 songs (and not a bunch of ties or honorable mentions please).
Part of my project is to get you think about how tough it is for an industry person to choose for a limited number of opportunities. So here is YOUR chance to promote 5 songs that moved you most. This project involves both those who picked and those who got picked. So if you need to copy your post Joice, please do before I delete it. I will also be deleting all other posts that don't follow a format at least similar to what Magne and Randy (which is a direct link and REALLY helps) did. (Thanks Magne and Randy and anyone else I missed).

By the way, if you have your page view set to 50 posts per page (if you don't I HIGHLY recommend you change that in your preferences because it makes using the boards WAY easier) then we're talking about the last 20 pages. I estimate that we're talking less than 1000 songs. The best way to choose is to look at each page of 50 and jot down the names of the ones you most liked. Note the page number so you can go back to it. If you find more than 5 songs you loved, then go back and listen to them and whittle it down and then post it. Here's your chance to bring positive attention to 5 worthy peers here. Many folks come to JPF hoping to get help, recognition, progress etc. for themselves. One of the best things you can do is sing the praises of the very best you find and then work hard to become one of the very best everyone else finds. After all, if you can't compete with the few hundred people who have posted songs here, how do you compete out in the world?
Listening to the music made by your peers and by the most successful in your genre are critical activities to become the best you can be. Hesitation to do it should raise a big red flag for some of you.
Brian

DEAR BRIAN I Got you fine Those were ACTUAL songs Posted HERE --just Song TiTles !!!!---- 50 per page/ 3 pages/ from Jan 1, 2010 -- yes there were a few repeats, people post same song, and a few off topic posts..... that I did not edit out...... MY POINT IS --- there are TOO MANY to wade through --- and to randomly just pick 5 songs that I PERSONALLY like ---- seems way too biased......... Edit away...... OH and I DO listen to my peers here Every DAY

HIDee Big Bro Brian!
Hmm...(don't hate me for this..but) "YOUR top 5 Songs" might just mean "MY Co-Penned Top 5" for 2010? Waal, it DOES give me an Opportunity to somehow THANK Those who gave me their Supreme ASSIST so-far This Year, so herewegoooo...
1) "Let's Take The Time" (I'll return with the DATE these appeared on MP3 Forum, OK?) Sung by ROBERT PICKENS...Melody by Mark Kaufman & (I think it's) Steve Soucey. R&B like it Oughta-Be, JMO!
2) "The Natives are Restless Tonight" Sung/Co-ed by "Big Jim" Merrilees...This is a Party Song like a Party Song SHOULD SOUND LIKE...(JMO Again, but-of-course!)
3) "I'm Over It/I'm Over You" Sung/Co-ed by Michele Bolton. (Soon to have MY Vocals as "The Parrot" on it)..One Fine FUN "Breakup" Novelty Song that I expect the Aussies'll sing for ages!
4) "You Saved Me" Sung/Co-ed by Mark Schuessler. (He DID, too...it's NOT a Humorous Cut, but a really FINE Adult Contemporary Song we Worked Really-Hard-On. Think Barry Manilow in his Early Period.) {It's HERE..but easier-to-access at Mark's Soundclick.com Site.}
5) "Take Out Food" Sung/Co-ed by Joe Wrabek. (Joe likes The Unusual even MORE than I Do...& I'll give Joe more credit..& blame..for this Kinda Weird-One...heh!)
5B) "Song For Joe" Co-ed/Sung by Little Stevie B-iederman...(Think we-uns posted it nearly a Decade-ago...it recently got resurrected at the MP3 Board/I'll always be in Stevie-B's debt. MR Talented Guy he is!)
2 More Co-s here you'll (I'll bet) hear more of: "EXCITEMENT" Co-ed with Danny De Can...(we're seeking a Male Vocalist who sounds like "Simply Red" for the Demo) and
"HE LOOKS LIKE HEAVEN (WHEN HE LOOKS LIKE HELL)" Co-ed with Heather Cowles...about to be Cut by Michele Bolton IF Heather Gets Back to Me with "Her OK"... (Heather??? PM Me Again!)
IF I had to pick ONE SONG that Blew-My-Doors-Off at the MP3 Board in 2010, it'd be POLLY HAGAR's "If You Could".
I feel like Joyce Marie...as far as picking "4 More" goes...heh!
Thanks Big Amigo for this chance to say "Thanks" to a lotta Talented Folks I Owe Thanks TO! Best Wishes/Big Guy Hugs, Stan
PS: I just KNEW my Rotten Memory would mess me up here...I owe Mike Dunbar BIGTIME for co-in', Producin' & Singing "Still Comin' Back From The War"...which, I suspect, IS gonna be the Best Song I've Ever Written words-to...someday..maybe-soon. (It's on the MP3 Board, but easier to access at Soundclick.com..just punch in the Title.)

Hi Brian I voted for these five, NOT BECAUSE I KNOW THEM, BECAUSE I FEEL THEY DESERVE TO BE PICKED. I took everything into consideration, The Hook, melody, music, lyrics, etc. No 1. Janice Hopkins/Steven Rieck/Magne Kolstad GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9020145No 2. Polly Hager and Dave Jackson & Kevin Emmrich added a lovely touch to the song too. IF YOU COULD!http://soundclick.com/share?songid=89033503. Drifter & Gus MORE THAN JUST FRIENDS http://www.myspace.com/davidjacksonsongwriter4. Thomas Shea / Lucas Kellison & Justice MORE THAN A DREAM (Justice)http://soundclick.com/share?songid=93123545. Keven Emmrich/ Big Jim you nailed this song! OLD STOMPING GROUNDhttp://soundclick.com/share?songid=89954821..This song, Wow, is so damn catchy, from the first time I listened to this, I never forgot it, so I went looking for it, congratulations to the three of you, because this song is one that I would certainly purchase if it was out on the market today, Love it. Excellent Hook, Catchy, excellent melody, top job! 2..From the first time I heard Polly sing this song, it stuck with me, and is the most beautiful honest heartfelt song I've heard, that yes this one also I would purchase if it was out on the market today. Congratulations, this song also deserves to be in the top 5. Vocal, melody, lyrics, the Hook all stands out in this song, Wow. 3..More than Just Friends, I was very impressed the first time I listened to this, and I didn't realize when I suggested to Dave & Steve they could turn the lyrics into a Duet, because that's what I personally could see in their lyrics, Wow you two, this song is a credit to both of you, great collaboration, and your hard work paid off, Wow, I'm so pleased you turned it into a Duet. I feel this song deserves to be in the top 5! Congratulations! 4..I've chosen this song, because I've seen Justice grow so much on these boards, I'm very impressed, so from this Aussie Mum, I loved the lyrics on this song, love the music, very Catchy, never lost the melody, the beat, and Justice's beautiful voice singing it. Yep, it stuck in my head, and I'm 47, and also my kids, continually played it, over, over and over. Congratulations to all three of you, great effort by all. On a personal note Brian, love to see on the boards, maybe a section to encourage younger writers on here more, I think the site needs it. That would be a good thing I feel. Maybe Taylor Swift can monitor it. 5.. Kevin, I absolutely loved the lyrics of this song, yep, never lost the hook, excellent write, that I searched for this one too. Jim, I loved Kevin's version, but after listening to you sing it, Oh Wow, what a Rocker, I absolutely love you singing this song, congratulations to both of you, great collaboration. Excellent in every regard. Brian, after this one, can we do one for those who just do instrumental ones, cause I have listened to great works of art on the boards here too. Brian I could pick a lot more, but I picked one's that stuck in my head, so I went searching, I've listened to others picks here, and Wow, what a great site we have here, they also had some of my picks, so a big congratulations to all, I LOVE JPF. I really needed the top 50 Brian! I COULDN'T FIT MY SONG IN, thanks for those who voted for our song "I'm Over it/I'm Over you", we really appreciate it, hugs Michele/Stan/Rodney. Hugs Michele

hyperlinks included 01 As The Crow Flies - Ellen M02 My Horse Never Liked You - Janice Hopkins 03 Rise - Sharla Shore/Janet Snow04 Big Glass Pig - Kevin Miller 05 Millicent - Scott CampbellI am sure there are many great songs that I have missed by not playing them but obviously I can only comment on the ones that I have listened to. And to Joice/Kevin and anyone else who is having trouble narrowing it down. Just do a search on the MP3 Board for songs you have commented on (songs you have not listened to are irrelevant for this exercise), and if you don't remember the song then it certainly doesn't warrant being in your top 5. The top 3 songs I have here I can remember well and if you stopped me in the street I could tell you about them from memory.

Hi Folks,
Thanks to those who have listed your top 5. For those who chose more or less than 5 keep in mind that none of your picks will be counted. So I suggest you make the hard decision and get it to 5, no more and no less.
I am fine with those who don't want to participate. But if you're not going to, please don't post here at all. I am not interested in debating it as it distracts from the project.
We need at least 20 people doing this to move forward, though I'd like more. We have thousands of visitors to the MP3 boards each week, so remember, anyone can participate including new folks and people who have never posted a song.
So I will continue to wait for more people for a while longer.
Thnaks,
Brian

I count 18 or 19 so far. We're going on the Road (a test trip to see how I hold up) to central Missouri for the week. I will check it later this week to see if we hit 20 yet or not. The lack of participation already addresses one point I wanted to make, but we'll discuss that later.
Thanks to those who have gotten involved.

I really hope I get to do this before Brian does whatever he is going to do. I am traveling again, but during the first week in August I will definitely have time (i think -- I'll be at the beach!).

Done!
1. Don't Push My Button - Michele Bolton
Much as I love this song (it's one of the most commercial I have heard on these boards) there is no way it is new for this year. It must 2 or 3 years old at least. The brief is 5 songs from 2010Poor Brian, I feel for you mate - Herding cats is far easier

Hi Nigel I'm just about to go to bed, Quote: Brian said: So let the fun begin... remember, anything first posted in 2010 is eligible. Mike Caro posted 2010, Post your hit songs here: Thanks for the compliment Nigel, and you too Mike for nominating "Don't push my button". Is that right Brian? As long as it was posted on the boards in anyway 2010, it could be counted. Goodnight, hugs Michele

Nice try I really don't think that's in the spirit of what Brian meant otherwise we might as well include every collaboration effort since JPF started as many of those have been 'posted' this year too (see Roy's collaborations thread) Hey ho

Hi
Okay I see the point, I wasn't thinking of the songs copyright either.
But Nige is technically right, this year written only so sorry Michele I'll have to swap out your song for another. I'll do that on my list.
Okay
Thanks Mike

Wait Sub!
I was waiting for Brian to clear things up, but I'll have to step in.
I posted a song a couple of weeks ago, "Old Hickory's War", that was copyrighted in 2006. It was the first song that I posted on JPF. I just wanted new folks to hear it. A couple of people picked it as favorites, so I PM'd Brian and told him that I didn't have any intention for the song to be included, since it is an older song. He gave me the impression that copyright date does't matter.
The question is was "Don't Push My Button" posted again in 2010? If it was, it's OK.

For the record: I don't care what the copyright is... if the primary discussion took place in 2010 then I think it's fair game. And remember... this is a multi stage project.. so you may get a choice to choose something from any date in the next phase... this isn't meant to exclude, but rather have a reasonable time frame upon which to choose... as someone who personally screened at least a portion of all 42,000 albums sent to us for the last awards, I wanted to keep the core sample of songs reasonably manageable. Juzt use common sense.. if it feels wrong to you, your gut is likely right... if it feels good, the don't worry about it. I surely will not be seeking ways to eliminate songs based on dates. I just wanted to deal with reasonably current material and keep the sample size reasonable for folks to choose. Before this is over, you'll have a chance go pick something older if you want.

as someone who personally screened at least a portion of all 42,000 albums sent to us for the last awards... Brian I'm not voting because I just haven't listened to enough of the songs... IE I only participate sporadically... and thanks for the couple of mentions here! The 42,000 number is interesting! Most of the folks I know here are on the top 100 posters list. If there were 42,000 submissions for the awards, the awards would seem to be statistically separate from this community and vice versa. Peace, Ian

Ain't that the truth! It's hard to remember sometimes, but given the size of JPF membership, I'd be surprised if even 1% post on the forum. The truth is, most working musicians are too busy to keep up with a message board like this. As valuable as online critiques can be, there is nothing more valuable to me than the kind of feedback you get on-the-spot from other people--be they audiences, collaborators, recording engineers, sound board operators, bar owners or kids.
