Hey, want a free song? Here you go.

I've got a full backing track here, created a while back by myself and Steve Soucy. (The original project is no longer in play, so here's a full instrumental track, just for you.) You get to be the cowriter, lyricist, singer...you name it. If you're a lyricist, maybe you want to team up with a singer and come up with a melody and lyrics to record.

Why? Because it's a JPF song challenge, that's why! It will be fun to see what people come up with. If you want to play, just realize that there will be other versions of this song too...so the point here is not to make money, the point is to have a nice song for yourself, and also to stretch your collaboration muscles by coming up with your best shot at writing a suitable lyric and melody for music that's already composed.

There are no winners and losers here, and no time limit...feel free to record something using this backing track, and post it on this thread so we can hear it. Have fun with it!

Thanks for this, Mark! With the volume around what would be 3 on this Mac, I was able to hear it well enough to do a one-off whisper-like improve blues vocal with some lyrics thrown in! And I even heard imagined harmonies! I haven't heard or done anything musical in over 10 weeks. Although it was all very subdued volume wise, for my obvious and needed reason, it was a unexpected thrill. I found the very cool chord changes fun to move along with melody wise. You should have heard it! Ha!

I can hear me doing this sort of thing once in a while, so all is not lost in music for me, although whisper like. But it really floated my boat as they say. I wish you really knew what I was feeling during that play. I didn't expect to listen to the whole thing. I just started to sing light as soon as it started for some reason, and out it all came as if I heard it before. Cool music and structure! It was made to order I guess.

Hehehehe......you can hear why Not often you'll drag me in front of a mic. Yep, it's all about getting out of the box, and giving something a try. Pushing the weak points, to make them stronger.

I'd never try to do it for real, working with brilliant vocalists, but to extend is to learn. If I need a vocalist to change a melody line, I'll play it for them on a piano, for obvious reasons.

It's great to see such variety, and musical interpretation of a backing track. No-one can say the backing is dull. Quite the opposite, and at points is very difficult to put in a suitable melody line and phrasing.

As one who starts with a melody line or riff, then builds up from the bottom, it's a real reverse of what's usual to me.

Hope you get some more takers Mark. It's a really great bed track in itself, PLENTY of variation.

Nice one, Glyn! It's so great to hear all these different approaches!

Nite, the track IS challenging, even though if feels pretty straightforward...this was music I wrote to an existing lyric a while back, and since the lyric was pretty long and complex, the music meanders to a lot of places before it comes back around. The original song was pretty good, but it really wasn't quite the right fit, and the lyric was recently re-musicated by another composer. One of these days I'll try to write a fresh lyric for my old melody and post it on this thread.

Thanks for playing with it, everyone! Hope you're having some fun and learning stuff about the music and recording side of things.

What a lot of awesome songs--and other threads too! Feel free to keep 'em coming, and some time this summer I'll put up something that already has a melody, for all you lyricists out there.
