Hey, I wasn't aware of a European Board at JPF.. Neat! cool

I'm watching as always! Don't think I'll go to Oslo, though.

I've seen the presentation shows, and I think this year, there are many disgraceful entries, especially from Eastern Europe. Songs where the lyrics doesn't make sense, or even is in proper english, and soo many songs sounds like 70ies stuff!! What's that about, we're talking POP??? The general quality this year is waay below, I think.

In Denmark the national tv (which hosts the Danish national competition) the entries now is only from pro-writers. It used to be a competition where amateur entries could make it, but those days are now gone. It's now a pro game for the very chosen few who has the proper contacts, allthough they keep up the appearence that it's an open competition.

But that follows what we generally see in music business (in the hard core western countries, that is).

I actually think England and Ireland has good chances this year, Nige.

Hi Magne

yes, there has been a rule change with regards to who can write the songs. There was a time when it had to be someone from the country being represented, not so, it seems these days. In that respect it is not good. Funny you should mention the Denmark entry, I think Sting might have something to say if that ends up being a big hit, it has more than a nod to Every Breath You take wink

Sadly I don't think UK have a chance. I didn't feel that there is a stand out song this year. The Netherlands has a very old school Eurovision feel about it. My personal favourite is The Ukraine's Sweet People but I cannot see it winning.

Should be fun, it's always a good party smile

Yeah, I think there are some close tunes in there. The Danish one for sure, but also the Norwegian sounds like "You raise me up". Im not big on soundalikes.

My personal favourite is Germany, with Sweden as a close runner up.

Yes, I think Germany has a chance. It reminded me of a Sophie Ellis-Bextor/Lily Allen type thing. Fairly contemporary sound, I hope it does well.

I am not sure I understand how this works or who is judging it? Can someone explain? Is the music available to hear somewhere?

I meant to add that the JPF awards are by far the most inclusive both genre-wise and location-wise in the world. We had entries from over 160 countries and nominees from over 80 and winners in around 40 countries or more. We had representatives from app. 50 countries at our awards show and featured many of them during the 2 nights of performances (We had 100 performances between the 2 shows).

By the way, I'd love to get more Euro folks to post and discuss stuff relevent to the Europe Music Scene here. We are planning to visit Europe again as soon as my health has a green light to travel n and we're hoping to set up some showcases for members.

Hi Brian

The Eurovision Song Contest has been running annually since the 1950s. Countries from all over Europe enter. In simple terms each country performs their song on the Finals night and the other countries vote, either by phone or a selected panel.

Over recent years there have been so many ‘new’ countries there are too many songs for the final. So to get numbers down to a manageable ‘show’ they now have 2 semi-finals leading up to the big night.

The countries have various methods of choosing their representing song. For the UK it is usually a one-off TV programme where the public get to vote.

It has produced its fair share of stars, Abba, Celine Dion but also has quite a comedy element associated with it. It is an art to write a decent Eurovision song, you get 3 minutes to deliver the goods. There are many views on it, some think it’s a joke and not serious others build parties around the evening. Others get put off by some of the ‘political’ voting.

I will be attending the Oslo final on Saturday night, it will be my fourth Eurovision and it’s always one hell of a party.

(For some reason the main Eurovision link (at the top of this thread) is playing up today – maybe it’s getting too much traffic. The BBC one should give pretty good info though.)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/eurovision/

Apologies for the rushed answer but I need to travel now, but if Magne (the songcabinet) is around he may be able to help with some more info.

Cheers

Nigel

I think Nigel covers it very precise.

Eurovision is a very high profile competition in Europe, due to the TV prescence, and the very high public interest following from that. Of course, like any type of music, it's not for everyone, but Eurovision has a genre of it's own. Allthough pop, often in combination with the folklore of each country are dominating, you can't just reduce Eurovision to the modern pop genre. It's way more diverse, and includes many musical styles and particular national tastes.

Even politicians reference the competition in their relationships with other Euro countries, due to the status associated with doing well.

In music business it's been given increasing attention in later years, as the songs from Eurovision have been doing well on the European charts as well as in dance clubs.

It used to be a competition for amateur songwriters (in Denmark and Norway, where I'm submitting songs to, the national competitions are still open for amateur writers - of course, you still need a professional song), but the level of songwriting has been professionalised in later years, and a winning artist can do very well with a Eurovision song. Nigel has mentioned some, and as a local example the artists behind the winning song from Denmark in 2000 "Fly on the wings of love", are economically set for life, due to winning the competition and the extended touring and sales after that.

There are huge national differences in the selection of the songs and in how professional the contributions are, but in later years there are now a circuit of professional songwriters who writes songs for other countries as well, as well as a circuit of artists with multiple nationalities that performs. That way, for some, Eurovision has become a career, or a very big part of one.

You can hear the entries here http://www.eurovision.tv/mediaplaye...p;medium=referral&campaign=Oslo+2010

I suggest starting with:

Armenia
Belgium
France
Germany
Sweden

To get a first impression

(Hopefully you don't get the "Not available in your area", like we do on American sites with videos).

I’m back from my whirlwind Oslo trip. The contest party was a blast as usual smile

Germany won, great performance by Lena on the night and a worthy winner. My personal favourite, Sweet People by Alyosha (Ukraine) managed a creditable 10th.

The broadcast was watched by an estimated 130 Million people. Here are the top ten:

1 Germany
Lena - Satellite

2 Turkey
maNga - We Could Be The Same

3 Romania
Paula Seling & Ovi - Playing With Fire

4 Denmark
Chanée & N'evergreen - In A Moment Like This

5 Azerbaijan
Safura - Drip Drop

6 Belgium
Tom Dice - Me And My Guitar

7 Armenia
Eva Rivas - Apricot Stone

8 Greece
Giorgos Alkaios & Friends - OPA

9 Georgia
Sofia Nizharadze - Shine

10 Ukraine
Alyosha - Sweet People

I listened to them.. Germany was okay... I think Turkey or Romania or Denmark were better. I also thought Lithuania should have gotten more recognition.

Personally, I think this was quite a poor year, quality wise. I loved the winning song, though!

It's written by a Danish songwriter, from the town where I work, Århus.

Thanks for tuning in, Brian.
