That Lecture was VERY Enlightening, & MANY Thanks Kevin (& Yann) for sharing.
I've had insomnia ever-since. JUST penned one to RM's "Parameters" that I'll post at Board 2...think it's "Commercial"-enough...& WILL appeal to that "7AM Drive-Time Gal on her way to work"...etc.
Owe ya each a Steak Dinner IF this baby sells OK..heh!
Best Wishes & Big Guy(s) Hugs, Stan

Thanks for posting, Kevin! High points (from memory): - you can get away with anything with the 10pm crowd with a beer in their hand, but with the 7am crowd in the car who just wants to hear the news, you gotta deliver a whole lot better - the 7am crowd will pay you, the 10pm crowd won't - make the singer look like a star, and NEVER over 30! - you write second verse first in 90% of the time, so you need first verse to set your ideas up properly - only change the chord when you change the mood .. gosh, Im a poor student

He made some interesting points, though I don't know that I agree with his "your only a song writer if your making money" idea. I don't think comparing medical practice to song writing is very realistic. There are plenty of hobby musicians out there. The fact that they are not making money off of it does not mean they should not be labeled musicians. I think the distinction he is looking for is "Professional songwriter".
Anyways I enjoyed the lecture and think it is certainly worth listening to.

Reach out and grab a big handful of something no one else sees then make them believe in the majesty of it all.

If you want to be successful... just write some number 1 hits.. and get some super stars to sing them.. then the royalties come rolling in.... It's really not that hard a concept to grasp... kinda like being a super track star... Just pick a distance and then run faster than everyone else Cheers

You gotta admit though you gotta study the craft before you can write a hit. You cant wake up and decide you can run faster than everyone.

I disagee you "have to" study the craft.. sure it can and will help.. and everyone can be "better" with the right training.. but there are too many variables for such a requirement... Like running... some folk train for years and can't make the local finals... others do very little to compete at state level.. It depends not only on what you know but your ability, your network the opportunities you accept or knock back, your personal temperment, and so on ... the whole point is to have fun...
cheers

Yeah you can "Study" the Craft. A lot of young wannabe's are doing that. And it shows. You have to live life before you can write about it. Most of those songs, by Artists on Major Labels, are their own songs, because the Label doesn't want to pay the full mechanical rate for outside songs. You can't force a hit, you just have to live it first.

As we've recently been made aware of, Taylor Swift doesn't follow Ralph Murphey's Tried-&-Proven Concept.
I enjoyed Ralph's flippant Delivery of All The Great Observations.
I don't think Anyone Knows It ALL. BUT..You Can Never Learn Too-MUCH. It WAS Worth the Time to hear what Ralph had to offer, JMO..AND there aren't all THAT MANY Successful Writers who ARE That-Willing to SHARE their Insight.
Thanks Again, Gents (& Ralph!) Stan
