Thursday I'm going in for an angiogram, and if need be, angioplasty. Back in October while visting Memphis, I developed a bloot clot in my leg and had to be hospitalized. While there, they ran an EKG, and dicovered I'd had a mild heart attack at some point. When I got back home, I did a stress test that discovered 2 blocked arteries. The angiogram will reveal how serious the blockage is, and if need be, they'll insert a stent or 2 to keep it open. This is a pretty routine procedure, and hopefully once it's done I'll be good as new.
I'm gonna be out of commission from thursday til' monday, and will be back in action next tuesday the 12th. Wish me luck!

Bob,
Good luck with all of that. When Helen (my wife) had her heart attack, they inserted a stent and put her on Plavix...a blood anticoagulant...and she has had a clean cardiac bill of health since. If we could get everything else taken care of so easily....
Good luck. Hope all goes as favorably for you. All the best!

Gosh, Bob! Hope all goes well and we'll see ya soon. Best of luck with the surgery-will be praying for sure.
"Grits is one of those country-boy words that is both singular and plural-like deer, elk and sheep. I think the singular is appropriate when there's a modifier that makes it clear one is talking about something specific. Like, 'Grits are good for you, but these here grits is tasty.'"~~Joe Wrabek

Hurry back, Big Bob:
We'll keep your spot reserved for you... and mention your name to the Big Guy Upstairs in our prayers. I hope all goes well. It's not too bad a procedure but the waiting and languishing afterwards that really wear on your nerves. Take lots to read and carry your MP3 player with charger.

All my best for a successful recovery.
I bet once you're healed that you're going to feel great with all that extra oxygen getting circulated around. Isn't modern medicine amazing?

I remember the blood clot episode. Actually, to tell the truth,, strange as it may seem, the blood clot thing may have been a stroke of luck in that it uncovered the major problem. Yeah, prospects look good Wy

Bob....I will keep you in my prayers, but I am certain that you will be better than new in a few short days. I had that done about 17 years ago....had a heart attack....veryyyy young....very shocking, but the angioplasty went well and it wasn't too bad at all....although I DID see my deceased grandmother standing at my side during the procedure. It was nice to see her again...HA.
As usual....she was giving the surgeons instructions...LOL.
Increased blood flow will make for even better writing and vocal breath control...and who knows....there may be some other benefits...HA. Okay, I'll shut up now....but I do wish you well. You will do just fine....I'm sure of it.

Glad they caught this now Big Guy. I know from experience that any sort of heart procedure is a drag, but technology has gotten so much better in recent years that the benefit dramatically outweighs any risk. You'll be much better on the other side and we can all have you around a lot longer!
Have someone give us an update over the weekend if possible okay?

If you had a blood clot in you leg, you can't fool around. I trust you are in good hands.
But I will say that in general, it is still a good idea to ask a lot of questions and get second opinions if your insurance will allow it. (mine does)
About 18 months ago, my regular doctor told me I should have a stress test. He sent me to a heart specialist. Before I saw him, a technician gave me the standard EKG. 20 minutes later the doctor said, "You have heart damage". I said, so you can tell that from the EKG? He said yes and then told me I needed an angiogram.
He explained that he would run a tube up my groin and when the clog was discovered, he would bring in his partner who specialized in putting a stet in. I said, "Wait a minute. I came in for a stress test". He said, "You can do that but we might as well just get right to the problem" I told him I wanted the test done anyway.
So they put me on this machine that images my heart. It takes about 20 minutes as it circles around you. It's kind of boring and it makes a lot of funny noises. Then they put me on a treadmill and my chart said to stress me to a 135 heart beat. I have been running all my life so I told the technician the truth- "I don't feel anything at 135. I don't feel any stress until 155"
So they ran me up to 155 and then checked my heart after a few minutes and the tech said, "Wow, that was a pretty quick recovery". I'm thinking- "Good there's nothing wrong with me". So they do the image thing again (image of heart under stress) and I went home.
A week later, I get a call saying come in for your analysis. I get there and the doctor is not in. He is in Paris for his daughter's birthday. I am cynical because I didn't like the guy who told me I had heart damage even before he said "Hello". And now he is in Paris for a stupid birthday party! Who can afford to throw a birthday party in Paris?
The "nurse practitioner" pulls out my image which is red and blue and says, "See right there you have 80% blocked artery". She seems very grave and serious. "The block is at the top which is better than if it was at the bottom but you need (angioplasty) immediately". I said, I want to think about it because I don't like the idea of you putting a foreign object in side me. Isn't there a non-invasive treatment? She said, "It is too dangerous to wait. It never gets better. What would your wife say?" I thank her and left but she made me feel like by walking out of the office, I was the stupidest most irresponsible boob since Homer Simpson.
I was depressed for the next few months as I explored alternative medicine and diet therapies. I had been an athletic all my life and now apparently, I no better for it! I felt uneasiness in my chest and pains in my legs and arms. I started obsessing about what would happen to my kids if I died. About 9 months after the first doctor visit, I decided maybe I shouldn't be an idiot any longer. Maybe I was in denial. So I got my expensive image and the EKG report from the first doctor (they made it difficult) and took it to another doctor.
I had a boss at the University of Oregon who had previously been the facilities manager of Walter Reed Hospital. He told me how to pick a good doctor. He said make sure they degree in Internal Medicine. Pick one between the ages of 40 and 50 to ensure they have been trained recently enough to know what's going on and still have enough experience not to mess you up. If they show academic excellence in college, they are more likely to be a good doctor. Do they have research credentials in their field of medicine?- Good. Check. I picked a good one.
The new doctor was friendly. He said, "So what brings you in here". I describes my symptoms and expressed my fears about the "image". He looked at the first doctor's EKG. He looked at the one he just took. He looked at the fancy blue and red $1000 image. He said both his EKG and the one done before I met with him were normal. I said, "The other doctor said I had heart damage by looking at that EKG!" He just shook his head and turned to the fancy Image. He said, "This area here that they describe as blockage could be your diaphragm. It is not a "normal" image but it could just be the way you are built. He asked about my family history, checked my heartbeat etc. and then said, "I don't think you are a candidate for a heart condition but if you want to be sure, you will have to do the angiogram procedure". I felt like a weight had been lifted off me. I ran 5 miles after work. I was out of shape but it felt good.
But a few weeks later I got sick. I felt like I was falling apart. I had a lot of pain in my chest and I thought I was dying. My ears were ringing. I had pain down my arms. So I go back to the good doctor and agree to to the procedure.
Not too scary- I got a light sedative, a local around the groin and anchors away- a tube travels up my leg to my heart. I figure I'm toast. I'll never be the same again. I will be bionic man, taking medicine for the rest of my life to control my heart "condition" because of course now I'll have this crappy metal thing in my artery reminding me I am living on borrowed time.
About 15 minutes later, I am feeling slightly stoned from the medication and the doctor looks at me, smiles and says, "We're all though. Your fine. No blockage". The tube was already removed. Just like that- it's over. A pretty nurse tapes a large cotton ball over the hole in my leg and I sit up. Don't try to drive for 2 days I'm told. Don't lift more than 10 pounds. No problemo! I'm outta here! The doctor shows me a computer generated drawing that looks like a Middle School kid drew it as a biology project. It is a line drawing of my actual arteries and my heart chambers. He said, "Right here where the artery enters the top chamber could be interpreted as 25% blockage but that is probably something particular to your anatomy because the artery inside the heart is unusually large". Music to my ears!
Here is the interesting thing. Every since I found out for sure that my arteries are not blocked, I haven't had symptoms that I was "afraid of".
The lesson I learned. Lesson # 1: Some doctors are "procedure junkies" who make millions doing the same damn thing over and over again whether the patients need it or not.
Lesson # 2. Trust you instincts. If you don't like a doctor- even if you don't know why, get the hell out of his office!
Lesson # 3: There are good doctors who are not arrogant, are very smart and want the best for your health without regard to how it impacts their own pocket book.
Lesson # 4 is the one I have the hardest time with. We are not immortal. Time is shorter than we admit. Life goes on within us and without us. Ok, so I borrowed that last line from the Beatles-there I made it a songwriter post after all.
good luck Bob. Take care of yourself.

Will do, this will be my last time checking in before all the hilarity unfolds. {Still have a gig tonight though!} I'm sure I'll be better off once it's done. I agree that the blood clot may have been a blessing in disguise{?} Because it called attention to the heart problem. My wife Mary deserves a lot of credit because before I met her, I hadn't seen a doctor in 20 years, not to mention without her medical insurance, we'd have been looking at about $30,OOO in hospital bills!
I'll have to see how I feel during my recovery. If I'm up and about I'll give you all an update this weekend, if not definitely tuesday. {I'd BETTER be up and about this weekend, The Bengals are in the playoffs dammit!}
Thanks one and all for the well wishes, you all are the BEST!

Samuel, just saw your post. Thats exactly what I'm having done. I went to my personal doctor after I got home from Memphis for a second opinion, and he sent me to the hospital where my wife works for a stress test. I too ran up to 155, and they injected me with some orange glowing stuff. It was then that they informed me the 2 blocked arteries. I'm having the same procedure done that you had, and yes, MORTALITY SUCKS!

Hi Bob,
Gosh, I'm just reading this now. What a drag!! Thank goodness, though, you found out about your conditon when you did.
While I understand that yes, these are considered "routine" procedures nowadays, it's never fun to be side-lined for medical reasons. Please know I'll be thinking of you tomorrow...and I look forward to your speedy-as-deemed-fit recovery and return to the Board.
Take care!! Beth

Hey folks, I'm back from the hospital! Turns out 2 EKG'S and a stress test were WRONG. My angiogram showed that my heart is 100% healthy, and I've never had a heart attack! The Doc said something like that only happens 10% of the time, and usually involves large guys {like myself.}I'll be out of action for a couple of more days to heal up. I'm a bit sore in the nether regions, {which is to be expected when a large instrument is rammed through your groin!}but other than that,I feel great! I'm still dealing with the blood clot in my leg, but hopefully the blood thinners I'm on will take care of it. Thanks one and all for the well wishes!
