Hi Gang

Just a rough mix & incomplete song to share for now, Won't finish the CD by this years end.. Again!

New Instrumental CD Song#4 Rough/Incomplete 2:58
www.substudiomusic.com/Inst4rough.mp3

All instruments Mike Caro

Untitled also - So any suggestions on that are appreciated.
I need to bring in other players for some help anyhow, melodically and some more musical input on this. I may have done as much As i could myself on it ya know?

Along with, my dis-equilibrium (dizzy) problem my neck & back are soooo bad now that sitting upright is becoming nearly impossible. I used to get more hours in a whole day to be able to function a bit, as time goes on that time is getting less and less it was about four hours months ago, now lately maybe 2 hours in each 24 hour day. Can't play the drums anymore, and I was just starting to get good!

And to say my vestibular vertigo problem is not connected to my neck, back, spine, is beyond my comprehension. They just do not care, period! Sheesh what incompetence on behave of these doctors.
I'm only going into my 13th year of this nonsense... smile the problem is chronic at least they all agree on that.

New Treatment attempt this week, yet again, lets see.

Thanks

Sounding pretty dang good to me. My wife is having another bout of her issue, too (it sounds exactly like what you have -- and no, the doctors are no help here either). While she can recover and function pretty well, she is never 100%. I do all the driving and errands and stuff and we make it by as well as we can.

Cool instrumental and your playing and arranging sounds great.

Kevin

What a fine instrumental.
The bass maybe a little muddy soloing in the middle part, but great performance.
Now I'm just a little unshure if you would like members in JPF post musical suggestions to you?
I'm sorry to hear about the daily pain you are fighting.
I really hope for you that the new treatment will plow the way for a better health.

Mike,

I have no useful medical knowledge to share but I know you need to find a way to keep the music flowing even if it means a laptop in bed or a customized chair at the console! Hang in there......

Thanks buddy.

The bass is pretty cool. There are 3 of them in there so i have to straighten them out a bit still sonically.

The guitar needs work, and maybe more play in the song.

Thanks

Thanks Kev

Sorry to here she is still struggling.
Does she have neck & back troubles?

I spoke with an inner ear expert over the phone, from the Balance Center Of New Jersey. And just from talking with me
over the phone for 10 mins or so, she said "no YOUR'RE right
your problem is a spinal one not an inner ear vertigo problem.
And "don't use the word vertigo anymore when explaining" My wife told me that a ways back, she's right as usual.

I need some more on this song, it's hard to come up with the right melody under so much rhythmical parts.

Thanks!

Cool, Sub!

You are, indeed, a perfectionist though. I can't for the life of me hear what needs improving. But that's why I'm me and you're you. smile

I was thinking it could use a lyric at the beginning but that thought kind of drifted away as it went on. smile

Love your instrumental stuff - it's a reality check!

Hope something different happens this week with your new attempt...

Howdy Mike,
I like the mix, as I was listening I was trying to lay a mental vocal trac, you are right, hard to sing this one. I like the sound and think a little tweak on the instrument levels might make it sing though

Be up soon! Love this tinming. Not saying I would have anything to add, but just listening to it in your control room with you accenting the parts would be great just for that! I have some melody options after it's sinking in, but nothing gold yet. Thinking of a completely different timing for the melody, and amount of notes used to something of Rock Rap meets Beatles.

Might be trash, so don't get your hopes up.

Hey!!! Sounds like we are going to have to get you to where Doc might be able to pull some strings harder than ever. Penn or one of the Philly research universities, or where my sister went for help with her cronic backneck issues.

Give me a few days and I'll get to your email for more info and options. I think you are going to have to make some travel plans, to at least get others than the norm to get to the root of your problem, which I still think is based on trauma caused Cervical, possible Thoracic and Lumbar Spondylosis, WITH Vertebral Occlusion,,,at least!.

The two conditions combined? Chiros will Never be able to treat any of the above, nor the balance centers, etc. You need "top Neurosurgeons" in research facilities to give you the attention the others haven't. Philly is good for that and more if you have something other than the above.

I'll be in touch. I know we tried this route before, but this time you gotta make some kind of move, or your 2 hours will ne down to 2 minutes before you know it. That is NOT what you and anyone here wants of course.

Gather and make copies of "all" the material from all the doctors and places, no matter how small in detail some may be, or be about, and mail them to me. Everything!!! For all those years. That is what Doc and I will need to be armed with, in order to gain attention to at least one of the research universities here. I stay over, we drive here in the AM, you can stay over at my place, go see whoever again for more tests or follow ups, etc., and get this thing going. Lets plan on the new year to have everything lined up for at least a date with someone in Penn or similar.

Your playing around with rinky-dink this and that with those chiros and balance people. You are just being told what they want you to hear. Then it's a few months of money, then you're "outta there" faster than a Ryan Howard Homer!

Serious conditions need serious places.

Start making copies,,,,OR,,,,,I when I'm up there, (soon), I can take them and make copies for you locally.

Song Smong,,,,lets get you FIXED!

John

Mike,

This really smokes! I love the basses you have in there. After I first heard it, I though of writing that you'd might need another maybe saturated or keys one to provide more deep end, when the bass is doing melodic work. But after reading you actually have three, I don't dare.

I love the whole thing, great changes and variations, it's a listen piece as is. The varied sections really provides interest throughout. I got a little confused about what the main theme was, though, if there is a main one? I loved the intro on the piano, so you maybe could consider repeating that, if you aim a version for tv/film that has to be more functional, identity wise.

The intro piano theme got me hooked, so did the bass solo, and the horns in the final. Whoo hoo, I loved that big feel those horns gave. It reminded me of some Genesis stuff, and together with the jazzy touch of the playing it felt really like best of New York. I would go for a title that captures New York, the 80'ies and maybe the jazz(-rock) scene. The drums sounded like you had the 80'ies in mind, with the snare and the ambience.

It sounds like there are material for several versions here. So I could imagine one with emphasis on solo bass and the intro piano theme. A big one with emphasis on the horns section, and the guitar one you feel for yourself.

Your instrumental reminded me a little bit about the Danish jazzers, Doky Brothers. Niels Lan Doky is a pianist and the older brother, and his little brother Chris Minh Doky plays bass. Chris have lived in New York for years playing the jazz scene. They had a track in the 90'ies called 'Hope', which I like and got reminded of by the feel on this one. It's a lot different of course, but really exploit the piano theme, and is bass driven with a kicking guitar solo towards the end, so I link to it just for fun http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtawqtUiiLY

Hi Mikey !

Great instrumental here... love the very hooky piano intro - there's a quality to it that speaks on it's own and what I hear is a Billy Joel voice ; ) -- very cool stuff.

It saddens me to heAr that you are still having so Much difficulty health wise -- but I wanna say again think positive and try to envision a healthy You in the near future -- think of that well form in your mind every day..... as far as not meeting the hopeful dead line of your project well now you just have a new date ; ) It'll happen. Just do what you can each day and think about all the great things that you have accomplished ! You have a terrific resume and a body of work that most of us can only be envious of and hope to achieve anything near. Smile because you are loved.

best wishes on the song. jm

Hey Sub,

Yeah, real nice. Bright, breezy, intricate. You've always got great production. That's cos you cheat ! How can anyone compete with 2 inch tape and analogue ? Don't know if you're running it in this instance, but you're using the same principles. Clean, clear and crisp.

The drums are magic. Can't tell if you're playing them, or they're samples, but heck, that's one fine snare/rimshot sound you got going.

Yep, ya got the structure well covered. 3 elements. Easily edited. Real good for vision.

Only nit ? Lead guitar needs to be more up in the mix and cut through. Suggestion ? Double it, time shift a couple of ms's. On 1 track cut off everything under 600k, pan slightly and "smudge" it over a 10-15 degree radius where you want it to sit.

Ah heck, just read what I wrote. I sound like the student giving the master a lecture. Anyways, just a thought, keep or sweep.

Good industrial instrumental anyways Mike.

cheers, niteshift

Wasn't MAD on the bass????

Discussion OVER! LOL

Oh I may use "SUBWAY" I like that! Maybe a two word combo on that.

Actually it's great when the instruments you got paid the most to play and took you the furthest you've been are below the ones you don't play smile I like that,it just jives with my way of thinking.

I thought the bass played the best melodies, actually the only melodies in the song so far.. Maybe a horn should take over on this.

I cannot find a melody to work over the verses (A Section) against that rhythm. The piano seems to be the hook. And it was added last and just followed the bass line.

Thanks!

John & friends

I went to the NEW physical therapist today, this lady "Wing"
was very nice and listened.
She started me with a deep spinal message therapy, she said I was completely out of whack and asked what i did for a living in my life aside form songwriter/musician.

I was like - "Longshoreman 17 years"...

Before that? - "House PAinter"

Before That? - "A Furniture Mover"

Before that? - A Landscaper" smile

She said "okay" No wonder your neck and back are destroyed.
heating pads and tenz units aren't gonna do it, I need work.
Even the Balance Center head person said, get real spinal therapy. This place also does the acupuncture so we'll see..

Very important -Also I'm seeking SPINE SPECIALIST and found one, only he's in Queens have you EVER been to Queens...
He is well known from NY Presby

Lets get an evaluation from him or someone who isn't from where i live! "Clownsville"!
The only thing good about where I live is PIZZA it's just the best in this Country, way better than the City!

Trying to avoid surgery, NOT afraid (okay a little) of the after results though more so than the surgery.

A proper diagnosis after 13 years would be very welcome at this point. I will reach out and choke or snap the life out of the next one who tells me my balance issues are NOT related to my neck and back smile Therefore they will have medical issues now as well.

Hey MAn I'm here I just need the RIDE to & fro and I'll go!
Anywhere!!

Thanks
Mike

Thanks!

Yeah,,,,message won't do it. Manipulation doesn't move things for good,,,,...just like cracking a knuckle,,,,SO those kinds of "treatments" is useless in your case especially. But you had to go through them, mentally, I know. Just waiting for that trial period to pass. Good.

Queens, Sure. Not familiar with all the details,,,but we'll get there! The hardest part will be parking!

Make the appointment and just let me know when it is. Don't have to clear it with me. If it falls on y birthday, you even get to blow out the candles! Just don't wish anything for me. smile

Doc and I will also get info form Philly as well. No matter what,,,,you should get several evals if considering "any" type of surgery. Then seek the ones with the best results.

Make the appointment in Queens. Give me the address, date and time. Good that he's connected to Presby of Columbia.

Hi

Well this one (therapy) just started and they want me for 3 months straight, so are you thinking don't go it's a waste of time? Not going to help?

And some kind of spine surgery is the only way to get fixed?

Just curious?

Anyway we'll We will talk with a specialist of course, even though I have done all those MRI's CT Scans with Dye, Flex Xray and will have to do them all over again. Man you would have thought after 12 Neurologist and one Orthopedic so far I would have had a suggestion at least. As much as I know they didn't care at ALL. I'm astonished at how dumb they could all be, is getting an MD a matter of money and time put in? brains and common sense are limited?

Therapy?, with all the damage and layering of such from year to year? How's it going so far? Worse, right?

From what you described in your previous work, and since, you have damage. Like a knee damaged that no type of therapy would "repair" it. Doesn't mean major surgery, but I would guess some type of going in "somewhere" and "somehow" could be needed to repair, relieve or replace.

Like messaging a broken leg, or using needles to touch nerves in a broken or disintegrated spine, soft methods are not for major problems. It's like a demo service taking a poem and telling the writer they can have a hit if they just let them do the music and promotion! They tell them what they want to hear.

You may need to hear something you don't want to hear to get FIXED. BUT,,,got to get evaluated by "top" docs in research facilities, (who spend their time figuring out the hard cases), (Neurosurgeons for one, and not those that gave you the easy, quick talk in your town.

"Playing light" if messing with all kinds of easy touch or pricking methods. OK for minor ailments that would go away on their own anyway in time....But YOURS! Getting worse, right? Much worse? So why go lightweight and GIVE others just more money to not even deal with your damage? Time to put on the big boy gloves and get in there!

Mike,

this is great! love the bass section from 1:20 to 1:50. especially the way it goes down deep and rumbles just before it returns to the horns. gave my sub a workout!

i hope the new therapies will help out.

Hi Mike,

Very cool! No ideas for improvement, sounds fine to me. Subway does sound like a good title. Subway Home? Subway to You?

Hi Mike

Thoroughly enjoyed listening, cool. Mike I can't offer any advice, I wouldn't know where to start, crazy especially that I don't play an instrument, frown one day hopefully, smile so sorry not much help hah.

Anyway, pleased to read that your having some form of treatment, I've heard good stories about acupuncture, so I'm praying for you, and good luck with your next specialists. smile

Keep us posted.

Hugs Michele

Mike,

Loved the bass and guitar twin after the intro! And, of course, your lead riff smokes! And the bass line starting at 1:27 is killer, particularly at 1:41 to 1:44. Percussions are spot on!

What would I change? Just one small thing. In the intro, I would bring the tremolo guitar (or is it a pad/synth?) on the right channel a little more forward in the mix. Not a lot...but enough that it's obviously there, not just as though it might have been an afterthought.

As far as a title, ikt reminds of NYC at it's busiest, ther different flavors of hustle and bustle, with the small respites, waiting in traffice and then the thrill of moving forward whn it it's your turn to go, etc. So, my thought is "Manhattan Heartbeat". Just a thought. Nice work!

Al - Thanks Buddy

Yes it was a keyboard, electric piano, like at the end.
But the frequency is getting lost in there with the basses.

So yeah a tweak on that and or perhaps pan it hard over for the intro.

It feels good this song, So i enjoy it. But really cant seem to fit a melody in there, the verse may not need one I think now the rhythm does the job as the hook.

The first change the chorus, plays a melody doubled up with 2 basses.

Which makes it a bit unusual and it slides by you.. The lead plays over the second chorus and the horns dominate the out choruses...
Strange kinda layout... No one instrument is taking charge as the main thing to the song, even the acoustic sounded nice in this...

And the bridge, well that's just a bass solo and a bit of over indulgence. I never get to play like that on lyric songs LOL..
That was a feeble tribute to the late JACO P.

You have no idea how frustrated I am with my lead playing.

Thanks Al

Thanks guys. I'm getting around to responses. Wiped out from my other thread here! smile

Thanks!
Peace Mike

ah..work work and more work. still working on my tunes though when I get a chance.

came to listen again. really like this. what i hear this could use is a high-pitched guitar lead "theme" over the two piano sections at the start, return with the horns at the end, the middle section being a nice interlude. one comment on the current mix is the bass seems to get abruptly cut off at the end.

Hi Mike.

My deepest sympathies on your medical problems. I have no medical training but I'll put in my two cents anyway.

Somewhere out there is a doctor that feels the same passion for medicine the way you do the sound quality of a song. He/She may show an extraordinary concern for you, or he/she may have a weak bedside manor but will show an obsessive interest in your charts and scans and the details of your condtion(which is in a way an interest in you). That doctor will either find the problem or find the person that can.

Good luck, don't give up hope.
