Recently, Noel posted a link for an event searching foe songs on which the Shakuhachi Flute is the lead instrument. It's an effort to keep the instrument popular and fresh in the ears of music listeners. I have written several songs on which the Shakuhachi Flute was the star of the show. But, nothing near this good! This is some of the most beautiful music you could imagine. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you like soft, beautiful music. Enjoy...I sure did. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lftV5-1Oh0A&feature=relatedThat's his wife playing the piano. She ain't too shabby, either! And the guitar solo kicks butt!

Thanks, Al:
Matsui has a flair in his playing style and, as you said, the music of this instrument is stunningly beautiful. Enjoyed this alot. Thanks again for posting and sharing.

Alan,
I have a friend in New Zealand who fell in love with these flutes a few years ago and now makes them himself...Beautiful instruments. Thanks for posting this!

Glad you folks are enjoying the music. I scored a college film last year and had to come up with 9 songs of japanese derivation with western influence. i was awarer of the Shakuhachi Flute prior to that, but not extensively. My research really got me interested in it. It has such a vibrant resonation and a slight amount of almost natural vibrato. Thanks for listening and commenting.

yes this are beautiful slow beautiful slow music, but in the middle session it's little bit doll and background music needs to be more polished. ________________ Naat

Beautiful-sounding (aparently bamboo) instrument, but I would have placed the mics differently to eliminate the wet lip and waste air noises, which are a distraction. Someone mentioned that they thought the Shakuhachi Flute has a natural resonance, or vibrato. It does not; those effects are skillfully coaxed from the instrument via manipulation of the proximity of the mouthpiece within the lips, by shaking of the head, etcetera. Great post. Thank you, Al. You're something of a music scientist, and I look forward to listening to your work when I get the time. I'm sort of new here; just getting my sea legs. All My Best, JD www.myspace.com/agiftedidiot

Indeed very beautiful music! THANKS ALAN! The shakuhachi player is Kazu Matsui, very prominently featured. The pianist is Keiko. One of my favorite CDs is "Wheels of the Sun" by Kazu Matsui. My musical hero (David Lindley) played assorted ethnic instruments and arranged many of the songs. I have a shakuhachi, and they are mostly bamboo. The good (hence expensive) ones come from the root, so it has almost a bell on the end. Some also have bone inlaid in the angled cut where the player purses his lips to play, so that they will last longer. If I work at it long enough, I can almost get some notes out of it.
