Hi Guys and Gals, it's me again.Although Indies are the new way to go,the fact is we do need others to help the process. If we spend all our time pushing our own careers and work, how much time does that leave for actually doing and developing your craft.I think that everyone is right. But even solo you must meet and implore people to keep it going. So you're still not doing it alone.I think everyone has valid points and we need to take it all in and figure out whats best for our own individual needs.Persistence is the key.Never ever give up on yourself,if you don't believe in yourself why should anyone else.Louie

Most artists of today, started out as independents, as did almost all publishing companies, record companies, producers and any one in the business. Nobody starts at the top.

Marc..... you cannot manufacture a fan base?.....try telling that to Simon Cowell. Sadly you are on the inside looking out and cannot see the wood for the trees. Rubbing shoulders with all those Nashvillains has tainted your views. I think you are one of those people who think that people are all as gullible as you. I am not saying that I hate Nashville and that it is all evil or bad I'm just trying to give a bit of balance to your one sided tainted views. I think there is a place for all kinds of music and all different ways of producing distributing and marketing...you have an attitude my Nashville way or no way.
As I said before Nashville is not the capital of the world. It is not even the capital of the USA.

Marc, Big Jim has a point, many of the groups my son listens to have made it on their own. You've even say so in your last post. However Jim,once you start really moving you still need help. Marc is right about a lot of things and I'm enjoying both of your views.Louie

I hope everybody goes to Lyrics Forum 3 and reads my latest meltdown--at least I focused this rant on a valid target of my criticism...check it, and see whatcha think, please.

Marc,i love reading your posts, you are immersed in music, you give honest thoughtful insights into this music business, all relevant, and current,BUT,unfortunately we on this side of the pond are not on the same wavelength music wise simply because, you see it all from a country angle, country music does have it's place here in the UK,but the difference is as wide as the pond that separates us,we have very very few (if any) mainstream radio stations dedicated to country music, perhaps the odd one or two on the internet, you may have the odd mainstream station playing a "country hour" but that is as far as it goes..that is one of the main reasons we cannot connect on to the country mentality, wee aint been raised on it,and therefore it will always be "on the fringes" music wise..that is not to say there are not many country fans in the UK,far from it...but it is akin to walking into a drug store and asking for condoms, you won't admit it.For people like me and countless others,Nashville is just a tourist attraction, one amongst many,in the great U.S. of A...i have been there, and had a drink in most of the boozers in Painter's Alley?..or is it Painter's Row?..very very enjoyable, but as i say nice to visit, but i wouldnt fancy living there permanent, especially to try and make a living, there were singers on every corner, and in every little boozers..so what chance has a hairy-arsed Scotsman, of breaking into the scene over there?..zilch or worse..they grow on trees over there, singers and writers..totally different mentality, and i do not mean that in a bad way..to be honest Marc i think the main difference between us is history...we are all intertwined with a different musical heritage on this side of the pond..which makes our music so diverse, tho' Nashville has a great pedigree, regarding country music history, perhaps that would'nt be a bad place to start from, regarding America's musical heritage...anyway,i enjoy your posts immensly, your take on the music business as a whole, whether it be country or not,is right on the money, and always very informative...Terry..

I respect Marc and his opinions he makes valid points and his enthusiasm and expertise is remarkable. I GENUINELY LIKE THE GUY BUT he does tend to focus only on Nashville..It gets boring after a while. Most of the namedropping people he talks about I have not even heard of and have to google. LOL
He assumes wrongly that everybody wants to write country and have a Nashville hit....that is OK for some but HEY it is a big old world and there are many other kinds of people and kinds of music. The Beatles seemed to do OK without Nashville as do many others both inside anD outside the USA. What works for country and Nashvile does not always work for elsewhere.
It would be great if he visited the Mp3 or lyric forums and gave feedback occasionally that would be more educational.

Nashville, Tn.
Jim and all,

Every once and a while you are actually going to have to read my posts and not just start writing something before you know what I said. I have told you all before I am a little tired of this whole "Nashville is the only way to go" when I say the exact opposite of that. I say it over and over, Nashville is a hub and I quote you facts, figures multiple perspectives. You guys are much more intellegent to quote nonsense. It is really you that are getting boring. And condesending.

Listen up and I'll try to break it down so you can understand it. If we are going to third grade I can go there too. Nashville is a hub of the recording industry. There are three in the United States. That is a country that some people want to go to. And it is one that the Europeans with their arrogance always seem to be interested in.
There are people on these threads who are interested in Nashville and the comments I make are a perspective. Just like yours. I get to have one to although I am sure you would rather I not.
The UK has singers and I don't denigrate them. I don't talk your countries down or personally insult you as you can't seem to get enough of doing with me. I talk about Nashville in context with the subjects at hand. If you want it to be your own thread and not allow anyone else to do so, fine. But you guys are really getting on my nerves. You talk without any knowledge of the subject at hand and are always trying to be superior.
Go back and read the things I post. Take them in context with what the heading of the subject is. I say the same thing all the time. It is my opinion based upon experiences with people in the business. And name dropping? Yeah, Jim I guess I do do that. It is relative to people's conversations and interests. The day everyone is flocking to Edinborough, Souix Falls, and elsewhere in the UK, you can start talking with athourity on that.
This thread started off as someone mouthing off about something he didn't quite know he was doing. It calmed down but now you guys pick right up and do the same thing.

I'll tell you what guys, I'll drop out here and you can take it wherever you want to. I get tired of dealing with people who are out to cut their own throats off. Had about enough of it.

Good luck to all of you I guess. Man, you don't know when to let up do you?

M

Well said Marc. I feel like a outsider because I Don't offer a lot of feedback.
I read a awful lot of back padding. Maybe that's what its about telling each other how good we are.
For me I'm trying to learn something. Hard to do when you see the same thing over and over again.

I am not sure what the Marc-bashing accomplished, except to drive off a valuable resource. He has often said that he is talking about the Nashville perspective -- and there are a host of folks who enjoy that and respect his career choices and his insights. C'est la vie -- I guess I can still catch over at songramp.

Marc if you want to leave AGAIN, this would be the third or fourth time you threatened to do this, feel free. This is a free forum with everybody entitled to their own opinion. I have nothing personal against you the USA or Nashville. I just, from time to time, remind folks that there are other types of music and other places that make it. I also point out the negatives of Nashville and its foibles.....I think it is good to get other perspectives. I am sorry that the truth hurts and that you cannot take any criticism or understand other peoples views or forget that Nashville is NOT the only place that records music. I do read your posts that is why I reply to them. I do notice that you never offer practical advice like critiques or contribute to the technical forums. Maybe I am wrong but all your posts seem to say look at me the big guy from Nashville and I did this and did that and I know so and so....blah blah blah but lack real substance. As I said your talent and experience would be invaluable in those practical areas. Just an observation. PS You claim that you never attack me or other music scenes.....try reading your posts, even the last one here, again then say that. For your info Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland it has an international festival where acts from all over the world perform. We have a thriving live music scene and a few recording studios. London another music hub you might have heard of is 1hours plane ride away. Many of the top international bands produce music there....it may not be Nashville but it does produce some great music.....If you want a list of the bands who record there just google....they might not be up to Nashville standards but I remember the Beatles were quite popular.

Marc ..i was not bashing you or your views in any shape or form.Just trying to explain we are not into country music on this side of the pond as much as our American friends.Perhaps if you came across here sometime and have a wee glance at some of our wee studios over here,we may not have the big names etc,but we certainly have got the technology and the guys who can really use it..if you do.don't go to Edinburgh, come to Glasgow (lol)..that is my side of the country here in Scotland..we have the best set-ups..Big Jim and his pals in the East..hmmn they are good..but not in the same class..lol...kidding aside,we agree to disagree, all music has it's place..who are we to judge peoples opinion on their favourite kind of music..we are all in this together...Terry..

Terry. Thanks for the support....you are a true gentleman and a very tactful diplomat....Sadly these qualities are not my strong suit. I must again say that I am outspoken and have views on just about eerything and am not opposed to expressing them. I do not expect or ask for people to agree. I only ask that they listen. I seldom bear malice and never ever hold a grudge....many here will testify to that. I apologise to anyone I have offended but still deserve the right to express my opinions. After all we hopefully all honour the right to free speech.

Terry you are a gentleman and a very clever bloke plus great songwriter and performer all this despite the handicap of having to work throught the west where artistic and technical skills are uncommon. I wish you well. JIM.

Hi Louie Marc is always crying wolf and threatening to leave...I do not see his prob.....so one guy ruffles his feathers he wants to throw the toys out of the pram. To use his own phrase we are going third grade and I can go there too. Yes Marc this behaviour of yours is third grade. Grow up an accept that others have opinions too...You are not always right. Now move on and maybe we can all act like adults.

You all understand--this is hugely cathartic for me to get to know you all. In the end, I'm not so different; just a bit peculiar at times.

Marc is someone I intend to learn from (assuming he sees fit to hang with us here), and Big Jim--I treasure the opportuniuty to one day work with you. You made my year, my friend. You are a forgiving soul, and I can attest to that immediately. Perhaps we're very much alike. This could be pretty cool; I can't wait to see what the future holds.

Marc--when I appeared on this site I was the primadonna; don't take my title! I earned it fair and square. By that I mean don't leave, okay. Try to see the good in bending people around to see where their strengths and weaknesses are. I've been adequately bent here to allow everyone to see that I'm not a rock; I do have other sides to me. I'm a very emotional cat, and that probably HELPS my writing.

I walk around wondering what fabulous things am I going to learn today. My approach to writing is to be flexible, be open to new concepts (or new ways to express old concepts) and I challenge myself continually, because I want to be the best writer I can be. I agree with Big Jim that it would be completely instructive to see how you handle critiquing, and I had wondered, what with all the mentoring you do, why it is that you don't critique. Can you tell us in your own words so I don't have to make assumptions? Please be thorough.

I can tell you that there are many postings here that I will never critique. Quite honestly, I believe the write(s) to be unsalvageable, and I don't bother blowing smoke up anybody's ass. I'm blunt with my critiques, and to the point. I'm learning to be a bit more personable in my post-critique messages, but I don't want anyone thinking I'd do them the disservice of saying I like something when I don't. What contributions to the learning within the context of critiqueing will you be offering?

I learn a bit from everyone here. I appreciate the patience of everyone here. I want to be a part of this family because I clearly see the potential and the benefit from being here--with an open mind. Thank you everyone for showing me how decent and honest you can be--and I crave honesty most of all.

All My Best,
JD

Louie,
When you get to 50 posts, I think you become a serious something. I sent some songs to someone down there in Spring Hill a few years ago. They were going to record them but it didn't happen. Keep writing!

Thanks Big Jim.....Yer no bad yerself!...btw,still waiting on you dropping into "millars bar" in Hamilton some Monday aft....give us a song or 3....hmmn I KNOW YOU HATE TO ADMIT IT..but we arra best thru here in the west of scotland...the "wee" studio i use frequently had Franz Ferdinand..and Wet,Wet, Wet, recording in there recently...Paul the "main man" went down to London then over to Los Angeles and done the mix on Franz Ferdinand's latest album,at their request..not too bad for a wee recording studio based in Blantyre..Paul also done all the recording and mixing on my latest album...the guy is a genius!..but i must admit your chaps thru in Edinburgh are very good as well..i had a wee scan at their website...impressive!...anyway i hope Marc put's the dummy back in and comes back into the fold...he really is a wealth of knowledge, and one of his last posts quoted that the recording world is a very small community..how true that is...my first publishing deal...i was not very happy with the way they recorded and pitched my song....i told another record co. what i thought...it came back to bite me on the Ass!...they all know each other,i had to eat a large portion of humble pie!...so i have learned a costly lesson...keep your mouth shut...word gets around in this business if you are a bad "potato"..and it really can work against you....They have you by the "short&curlys" if you make any waves...because they all work together...at the minute we do need the backing of record co's...not to say ,that it will always be the case,as the internet is opening new doors, and different avenues, but the quickest way is definately to have them behind you...anyway thats my 2 cents....best wishes...Terry..

Hi Terry, nice reading.
I do have a small saying that I try to live by, not always succesful hehe.

It's sometimes best to keep my mouth shut and let others think that I am a fool, than to open it and confirm what they think.

Louie

Now how in the hell can there be more than one best lyricist!? Kidding. We're a diverse bunch of writers, to be sure, and I enjoy reading through and listening to all of the different styles.

I'm impressed by how many willing collaborators there are here. This thread has taught me things money can't buy--and having survived myself I can tell you...I earned that knowledge. I look forward to good things happening. I'm glad you're here, Louie.

I'll watch for your work, whenever you get to posting some--

I can't speak for Marc, but I can give my opinion, or ask you a question. If you make a living as a consultant in any field, would you give free advice to one client and charge money for the same advice to another? That's the rock and hard place that people like Marc are up against.

He is under no obligation to give us critiques. He does that for a living. If you want to tear apart his experience and advice, so be it. Shoot yourself in the foot.

Ben, if you think about it he gives other advice here all the time which he charges clients hundreds of dollars for. I'm not saying that's bad, but I certainly can't find anyplace where critiquing songs and lyrics would be asking any more or less than he already gives--as I said--for free here by telling us the ins and outs of the Nashville scene...the industry, not the infopaper.

You keep saying I'm shooting myself in the foot. Those wounds are healing; I'm in no way tearing Marc down; just asking a question. I'm also not the only one who's asked that question, so get off me about it.

When I became president of Austin Songwriters in 2003, one of the first things I did was take former presidents to lunch and pick their brains for advice.

One of the former presidents told me:

"Pitch opportunities are what make songwriters pay to attend songwriting conferences. They all believe that they have THE song and it's a just a matter of the right person hearing it at the right time. Once they attend, what they find out is:
1) how much competition there is,
2) how truly great their music has to be &
3) that they might not have THE song yet."

You want to make sure you have a STONE COLD HIT before you bother to ask to pitch. Make a killer first impression.
Not nice guy, crappy song, terrible demo"

Note to self: never let them pitch me again.

Songwriting Success comes slowly, it's important to be
hard working, talented, humble, and easy to work with
because you need a writing relationship. You probably won't write a hit on your first song right out of the gate.
Write a decent song and leave the door open to write again.

It's important to have a history of success and to collaborate with other talented writers and artists.

You've got to be willing to rewrite,
great songs are co-rewritten.

SongU is a great resource, get a free trial membership at:
http://www.songu.com/IFS

I suggest you not talk about how great your songs are and how great of a songwriter you are.
Just give people a link and let the song speak for itself. like
http://tr.im/iresolve

The best way to get into songwriting is to write often, strive to improve, study hard, and become an active community member online and in person. When you meet people, don't come on real strong asking them to write with you, just let things evolve and wait for moments when opportunities appear.

You need to meet fellow travelers, those on the same path who desire success. It's hard to motivate a nonwriter to work on a song with you.

hope this helps

Ande

When I first came here looking for collaborators I wasn't at all lacking in confidence, just people skills. Fortunately for me I'm an extremely fast study. Honestly--I have the skills to write top-grade material (lyrics), but I'm becoming aware that getting anyone to care or collaborate will require a little humility, and a softening of my emphatic tone. I know I haven't by any means written my best song yet. By the same token, I'm painfully aware that I've already written a lot of songs which could hit the charts--and that none ever will unless I learn to work well with others.

You and I aren't so different; the main difference between you and me (from reading your want ad posting) is that I actually do read and respond to my email promptly. The other differences are incidental.

I thank you for stopping in; it is a pleasure to get to know you. Perhaps one day our words will be comingled in some fabulous standard. Till then--

JD

JD,

I think you missed Ande's point.

Ande is saying that your declaration of writing "great stuff" is invalid. Only others can declare your stuff is good. To tell folks that you have already written "hit" material is pretty much a turn-off. You say you are a quick learner and I think this point is critically important.

We are all legends in our own mind....What is important is
how others see us OR should I say how others (whose opinions count) see us and how these opinions manifest themselves AS IN RECORD DEALS AND BOOKINGS ETC.
There are plenty people who are very talented YET do not get acclamation and plenty folk with little or no talent who get far too much.
As they say in the Malcolm in the Middle song
Life is ufair>>>LOL

Also keep in mind that what talent we do have was acquired in part through the influence and achievements of greater minds past and present, both artistically and technologically. None of us would be here boasting of our great achievements today, if it weren't for them.

Best, John smile

Other people never feel the way you do about your projects.Your music, your art even your life means more to yourself,so we tend to view our own work threw rose colored glasses. When I was young (about a hundred years ago)and first started drawing,no matter what my family and friends would say,I knew my drawing didn't look like the Mickey Mouse I was trying to copy,so I kept trying. So I've learned how to be my own best critic or should I say my own worst. That is how we grow! You can never learn to much, any and all input from the outside IS GOOD!WE learn and learn and then we try to put our knowledge to work and we hopefully come up with a new way to say the same thing.
