Shakuhachi Chamber Music Composition Competition

The aims of this open international composition competition are to promote the shakuhachi as a modern 'classical' instrument, demonstrate the capabilities of the shakuhachi in ensemble with western instruments, stimulate composition for shakuhachi together with western instruments and chamber groups, and raise the level of shakuhachi performance. Three winning compositions will be selected by the judges and will receive both a monetary prize and a publishing deal with Reed Music. All works submitted for the competition are placed in our database to enable access by those interested in new works for shakuhachi with western instruments. Links will be made to composers and also to a source for scores and audio where available. This international competition is held every two years with rules which vary to include a different range of western instruments with which to accompany the shakuhachi.
