Howdy everyone!

Well, last year we did the Halloween song challenge -- and it appears several people have kept that going this year on an informal basis, which is great. grin

In the meantime, I changed my avatar earlier today to better represent the season; the pic below is of "Beth The Gypsy Girl", taken when I was about 3 (recognize the smirk smirk ? ). SO, the squeaky wheels ever-spinning, I thought it might be fun to start a VISUAL Halloween Creative Challenge if you will. Got any pics from back in the day, of you dressed up as Richard Nixon...or Wonderwoman? Or when you were 10....or maybe from last year's blow-out bash at the neighbor's?

Perchance you have something groovy planned for THIS year?

For the sake of any new (or other) JPF'ers whose constitutions might be more delicate than my own ( wink cool ), please do try to keep it clean grin .

Anyhoo, have fun with this. It might just give ya an excuse t' call yer ma (for those of us lucky to still have ours around I should say!).

Ha, I was thinking it might be a kick to try to figure out which pic belongs to which JPF'er...but then I reckoned the POSTER'S AVATAR would be a dead giveaway.

I don't get out much ya see, and well.... eek

Looking forward to what you come up with....
Beth

I know. She's still adorable, Scott!

P.S. Seriously, we didn't really have costumes when I was a child. We donned pillowcases and maybe we used an old bathrobe and had a cheap plastic mask. And, back then my family didn't own a camera. I was a teenager before my parents ever bought a camera.

"Grits is one of those country-boy words that is both singular and plural-like deer, elk and sheep. I think the singular is appropriate when there's a modifier that makes it clear one is talking about something specific. Like, 'Grits are good for you, but these here grits is tasty.'"~~Joe Wrabek

Alas (practicing using 'alas' in a sentence, again), cameras were less durable when I was younger. There are accordingly no early pictures of me.

Since I maintain I am scary enough without a costume, my wife made me a T-shirt that says "I Am Not Wearing A Costume," and that's usually what I'll wear (along with other clothes, for you dirty-minded people) on Hallowe'en.

Joe

P.S. Beth, you look like a Good Witch.

"Boo" Backatcha, Mz O!

I only had 2 "Scary" Childhood pics taken of me...1's the Typical Bare-Assed Baby pic, with a fake Indian Headband, & cardboard tomahawk, posed on a Black Bearskin Rug my Dad'd shot prior to The Pic. (Full-color..making it harder-yet to live-down..ca. 1949.) The other's lost here somewhere...with me in a black long-sleeved sweater, wearin' a Grass Skirt from the Philippines Dad'd brought back from WW2...(& in Blackface)..ca. 1951-2. Both are a Hoot...yet I got NO idea where they're in-hiding.

Thanks for Sharing Yours...&...a Very Happy Halloween to ya & Evabody at JPF!

He was probably sleeping Naomi. Crawls in my ear canal when it's bedtime. I hate it when he bangs on the drum in there.

He's very sensitive about being called a tiny little squirt. I hope he doesn't see your post Naomi. It will really upset him. Probably won't come out of my ear canal for a week.

I know I've posted this before, but it's still good. This is from a Halloween concert mid '80's at Eastern College in PA.

I think I was the inspiration for both Harry Potter as well as Slash.

Cool pic, Tom...

Every year our school puts on a dinner for alumni where their former instructors are to dress up in costume and serve them dinner. Also, they (we) are supposed to try to separate them from their money. It's for a good cause - scholarships for needy students.

I've done it a few times but only found one pic. Technically, it's not halloween - but it could have been. smile

I was playing an unfortunate camper this particular year - one that bad things always happened to. Someone took this photo as I was being introduced by the emcee - to the sound of Dueling Banjos. The part of this costume that got the biggest laugh was the stuffed bear cub that was humping my leg.

Hello [color:#FF6600]Boos and Ghouls (I CAN'T be the first one think of that, can I?)...

Anyhoo, I appreciate the various comments everyone has made thus far -- not only about your own Halloween costume recollections, but also those regarding my "Wednesday Munster-ish" appearance. laugh zombie

So, let me respond to a few of you before the rugrats get home....[/color]

Hi Tricia: Did you get my check in the mail yet (LOL)?! Frankly, those were the same sort of costumes we mostly wore...and we carried those little orange UNICEF (I THINK) boxes too, remember?

Hey Joe: I dare-say, that sounds like a great and quasi-stylish wink costume idea! Thanks also for your "P.S."....it appears further down your assessment is ultimately overruled ...

Hi Polly: Intimidating, huh? Maybe I should dig out the old costume for upcoming parent-teacher conferences... Also, thanks for the songs-for-Beth idea, but it's already been done!! The generous and talented folk at JPF wrote, produced and compiled(under the watchful eye of mastermind Joe Wrabek!) a number of songs for me, to appear on my personalized "Broken Record." I don't remember if you were around then Polly. It was a get-well-already! type gift. I just listened to it yesterday in fact...and it holds up well over time ( grin )...

BTW Polly, I'll catch up with you more a little later okay?

Ciao for now kids...

Beth

Okey dokey Stanerooski,

Gonna try to get caught up on this thread so I can get to some posting on SONGS!! ((Not that I ain't enjoyin' this, mind ya!)

Anyhoo, as always, I enjoy your stories. Reckon those snapshots were taken back in the day when EVERYTHING was politically correct!! I remember even as late as the early 70's getting one of those dolls you could turn up and it would be one doll, then you'd flip it and it would be another doll? I forget what they're called -- okay, I just looked it up, they seem to go by "Topsy Turvy" dolls.

Anyhoo, I had received one from my godmother and godfather who were raised in deep Alabama....and they got me one that on ONE side was this blonde southern belle -- and the other side was her "Mammy". I was aghast!!!

OR for Halloween, maybe I should say I was aGHOST! HA!

Sorry to get sidetracked...but I figure if anyone wouldn't mind, it would be you! (that's a mouthful!).

Why so glum JLS? Though it does appear you could use a little lip balm....

I do like the hair though... you got a little of that grunge-Johnny-Depp thing goin' on...I think the mole is Cindy Crawford's....

AH, so many costumes, so little time!

See ya!

Hey NS.....

Never got the Drew Barrymore comparison before. But in preparation for a joke about perhaps being compared to JOHN Barrymore, I found this pic of ETHEL....and I can see a bit of resemblance!

http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=ethel+barrymore&FORM=MSNH11&qs=n#focal=a48f7ff090fbe0a63a949b0027433243&furl=http%3A%2F%2Fcheriblock.files.wordpress.com%2F2009%2F04%2Fethel-barrymore.jpg%3Fw%3D200%26h%3D152

Very keen observation, my dear!

I would like to add I did meet and briefly converse with (prepare for name-dropping!) Drew Barrymore in NYC several years ago. Does that count? Regardless I have to say, I have NEVER seen anyone with such beautiful porcelain skin. And sure, her feet might be planted firmly in mid-air, but she was very gracious. And at the end of the day, that's what counts in my book: Good manners and a good complexion!! grin

Thanks NaomiSue. I appreciate you takiing the time to comment.

Hey Scooter,

Am I a bad person to admit my favorite part of this costume is the foot accessory? bite I love the "Deliverance" theme music. Now THAT would be a scary party!! bite eek

Otherwise, I think the dinner/fundraiser deal is cool. I can see how, with that get-up, people would want to give you money!!

Thanks for taking the time to look for this....

Ciao for now,
Beth

You can upload it via your post but you need to use the reply button that is not the quick reply. The one that is at the bottom of the window that shows up in the posts.
You upload them by clicking on the File manager and then when you click on the uploaded file, you copy the address and paste it in. It's like posting your avatar.

WOW [color:#000000][b]Ricki... is that the name?

I daresay I'll think twice before calling you Limey again. Perhaps SLIMEY is the better word.

Anyhoo, the scary thing about this shot is that it's believable. Not meaning you personally, but I've SEEN people like that!! What's the red stuff on your face and front of your overalls, though? Did you have to kill somebody for that costume?!?!

Really, thank you for sharing.... And thanks to Jean for showing you how to get the pic up here. A whole new world has been opened for you now....

Happy Halloween in advance!

Hi Beth,

I actually figured it out myself, but thanks Jean, for taking time to help.
This was so long ago, I don't remember what the red stuff was. I'm particularly fond of the wart on my right cheek. If I ever saw anyone that looked like this, I'd run away, very fast! My husband dressed as Salvador Dalí, in drag. What a hoot! This year I hope to stay home and eat all the chocolate myself. smile

OMG Unc!

That's spectacular! I LOVE the expression on all your faces...though I'm a little afraid to ask about that section floating in the middle! eek

Alas, I have to stop looking now, because I'm getting a little dizzy. But thanks for taking the time and effort to toss in this Uncle-Remus-meets-the-Munchkins extravaganza.

Happy Halloween in advance to you too!

Inspired turn-on Tom...I think! love eek crazy So here's a little something for ya....

Bethie Borden took a bong,
Had forty hits and wrote a song,
When she heard what she had done
She knew her muse was stoned, what fun!

For those of you who don't know the original...

Lizzie Borden took an axe,
And gave her mother forty whacks,
When she saw what she had done,
She gave her father forty-one.

Anyhoo.... I'll be sure to wade thru my bag "Weapons-For-Every-Occasion" whenever I get mu butt down to Nashville. OOOOOEEEE! laugh

Happy Halloween Tom!
