This guy was behind a lot of music that you know, even if you weren't familiar with him.

Bummer! And no doubt about it that we've all heard him.
He was the fifth Door! When you hear a bass guitar on a Doors track, that was Larry. The piano on "Bridge over Troubled Water"...that was Larry, and he arranged that song as well. He was in Bread, playing on all those hits. He was with Duane Eddy, Elvis (Presley and Costello), Beach Boys. He was part of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound.
He was one of the legendary Wrecking Crew, session musicians extraordinaire, along with Hal Blaine and Leon Russell and Glenn Campbell.
There goes another giant. RIP.

I had no idea he was part of the Wrecking Crew. A former colleague of mine is working on the WC documentary, with Tommy Tedesco's son, Denny. I hope he gives Larry proper screen time!

I remember he played on a lot of 70's one hit wonder songs like "Don't Pull Your Love" by Hamliton Joe Frank and Reynolds.

Larry Knecthtel was a great guy. Very humble, yet very generous with stories about the "days." I got to play a few sessions with him when he lived here in Nashville and he was a wonderful player...smooth. He actually apologized to me for not knowing the Nashville Number System, but he outplayed guys here that do know it.
He played bass with the Wrecking Crew while Joe Osborn was in the army. Among other things, Larry played that great fifth glissando in the intro of Mr. Tambourine Man for the Byrds. When Osborn got back from the army, the band suggested Larry switch to piano.
A real gentleman, a fine musician. He will certainly be missed.
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

I don't know if there is a connection or if this is even true. When I lived in Tulsa I heard that Leon Russell (wrecking crew member) and David Gates (Bread) attended Rogers High School at the same time. They recorded their first record together. It was an instrumental.

He sounded very wonderful. His poor family must be devastated.
