Well, if you saw the overused and cliched title and clicked anyway, many thanks. smile

Just a whimsical kind of thing..... Life Goes On is here:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=377550&songID=7856956

All of the melody sections came to me within about 5 minutes. That usually means I'm ripping someone off. If any of this seems overly familiar, you'll be doing me a favor by letting me know.

Any other comments welcomed too, of course. I'll stick the lyric below.

Thanks,
Scott

Life Goes On
(c) 2009 by SW Campbell

When I die I’ll let my body know
It’s supposed to help the little flowers grow
So a bee will drop by from a wide open sky
To collect him some pollen to spread
Then he’ll fly for a day to a place far away
Where a flower is raising its head
Life goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on
Life goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on

In a park a young man wants to sing
Cause his mind is filled with bright and wondrous things
He’s not much to the eye and he’s always been shy
So what’s in him not many could tell
But a flower he passed somehow catches his glance
And he puts it into his lapel
Life goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on
Life goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on

That young man he won’t know it yet
But something big is coming his way
He won’t even know that a message was sent
The same one he'll send some day

Young lady sees a young man walking by
Ordinarily he wouldn’t catch her eye
But there’s something amiss and she knows what it is
When she takes in the flower he wears
Then an hour is gone filled with laughter and song
And that flower is tucked in her hair
Life goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on
Life goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on
Life goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on
Life goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on
Life goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on
Life goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on, it goes on

Hi Scott !

Well it's a simple tale put together in a way that reminds me of the gypsies -- I was waiting for the squeeze box to enter at any minute.

I really like the repetitive hook - very strong chorus that very few could resist singing along with. I think you arrangement and music match the lyrical content.

If I have to pick at something it will be the line

But there’s something amiss and she knows what it is<<<<<<

I guess you are meaning is that the flower is unexpected on the guy so she finds him attractive........

guess if i had it my way -- I'd rather say that straight out..... in those two lines-- but I'm sure that it is just more of a personal preference.

Anyway - It's a Real enjoyable song and your delivery is super ! : ) jm

Hey Scott,
I love this song.It doesnt sound familiar to anything that I have ever heard before. It kind of reminds me of an Irish wedding/dance song without the Irishness(is that even a word?).Anyways...its a fun song and pleasurable to listen to.I really love the raspiness in your vocals.

Scott,
A little Highland flair. Nice. Lilting 3/4 will often do that.

I too was a little puzzled over the "amiss" business. It brought to mind too many possibilities. For me "amiss" has more of a negative connotation than "unusual", "out of place" or even "strange". I know you don't like to do the microscope on lyrics, just my $.02 worth and maybe not worth that much. 8)

I tried to hear what you borrowed and all I have is the 1-2-3-4-5 reminds me of "Hold Me" by Fleetwood Mac but that's not in 3 so I think you're safe on that count.

All in all a fun tune and good story.

Hey Joice:

Thanks. This is about as quick as they come for me. Melody and lyric on Friday, simmer over the weekend, then record on Monday grin

I probably jumped at the easy internal rhyme on that line - I'll give it some more thought.

Appreciate the critique!

Thanks Michelle smile

I don't do many songs in waltz time - but every once in awhile one lands in my lap. Glad you liked it.

Don't know if Irishness is a word. It's better than my alternative of Irishicity though smile

Thanks JW. I can count on one hand the number of songs I've done in 3/4 time - they all seem like gifts to me.

Since you and Joice both mentioned the same line, I'll give some thought to it - didn't spend nearly the time on the lyric that I normally do.

Appreciate it!

Scott,

I listened a little earlier but didn't have time to comment.

This is a bit different from you...but a good different. I can't remember the last time I heard one from you in 3/4 time. that same line that joice & Jw mentioned made me stop for a minute to guess exactly what she was thinking about. I'm guessing it's the flower looking out of place.

Other than that, what's not to like? Good song!

Scott,

I love this. It does have a bit of a Highland sound. I can see two people whirling and spinning around together in the Heather(hey...nice inner rhyme there...HA)

I can hear this as part of a movie soundtrack for sure, maybe even an animated film. It's really fun and whimsical....has a message of hope...love the lyric. Love the piano...great job!

I have a couple of 50/90 tunes that are in waltz time (I haven't recorded them yet). I think I just do waltzes because they are considered so "out of vogue".

This a great "lilt" to it, happy go-lucky music, but the lyrics in the beginning are not that happy. But it shows the "circle of life". Good instrumentation and singing on this one. I am a fool for lots of voices every once in awhile, like you did at 1:37.

This is a really good write, but all of your lyrics seem well thought out and crafted. I like the little short percussion additions here and there. This sounds like it was produced by George Martin.

Hi Scott,

What a fun tune this is! I like the description of whimsical, maybe it's the 3/4 time, but also the lyrics, lighthearted, hopeful. Your performance, vocal and musical was excellent. Nice array of instruments too. Was that a tuba?

Hi Scott,

Very nice. This has a really nice, warm feel to it. Best of luck with it.

The melody to the chorus is probably referencing something else, but probably not completely. You can probably change a couple of notes later to avoid copyright problems if there are any. It may just be referencing a public domain folk song, in which case you're OK so I personally wouldn't worry about it.

I'll do a piano part to this if you'd like.

Anyway, nice tune.

Peace,

Ian

Thanks Alan!

Yeah, I'm thinking about that line. My thinking was that the flower was incongruous enough that it made her curious to look deeper.

Nice to hear from you!

Glad you liked it, Jan.

I had an animated video running through my head as I was putting it together. Not sure how to incorporate the first couple lines though smile

Thanks Kevin. smile

I'm on the fence with some of those things. I just added them on a whim smile

Not sure how well they fit though....

George Martin? Must be the tuba! grin

Seriously, thanks for the nice compliments. I've never had a song come so fast and all at once before. Is an interesting experience.

Good luck on your 50/90 project. Geez, I couldn't do that even if I was doing it full time!

Hi Ricki - glad you thought it was fun. smile

Well, it's my keyboard's version of a tuba, anyway. I've done four songs so far where I have a tuba in one ear and an accordion in the other. I really like the vibe it has. Bordering on overdoing it though grin

Thanks!

Peace,

Ian

Hi Ian:

Very cool offer! Thanks!

I'll send you a pm....

Yes, it's the chorus that sounds like something in the back of my mind. Would be nice if it wasn't used once before but, rather, many times before smile

Appreciate it, Ian....

I like it. The simplicity is effective. I like the flow of the song.

Hey Scooter,

Let me chime in with everyone else....this is quite lovely and carefree. Though personally I might have to take some Dramamine to enjoy all the spinning sick wink , I too envision a ballroom....or an open field...filled with rosey-cheeked maidens twirling and twirling away.

I have to say too, I'm always pleasantly surprised when I hear your voice. There is a gruff quality to it, which I enjoy, but you're also able to parlay it somehow to create a very charming atmosphere here. So good for you.

On the "amiss" line business, might you simply change it to:

Young lady sees a young man walking by
Ordinarily he wouldn’t catch her eye
But there’s something 'BOUT HIM and she knows what it is
When she takes in the flower he wears

It does of course dilute your internal rhyme there, but anyway, just food for thought.

Anyhoo, this was very uplifting to listen to this morning Scott. So thanks sharing!

Ciao for now,
Beth

Scott,

I grew up playing music in folk masses at my local church. I know the message is not the same but the music takes me back to that sound a little. The guitar and piano work well to build a very uplifting sound. Both music and lyrics draw you right in. Nice work!

Hi there Scott,

Hope this finds you well.

This song is so lovely! I love that you did it in 3/4 time, and that it has such a fresh, uplifting quality to it. That repetitive hook/chorus was brilliant! Just love it.....you can't help but smile and want to sing along. As usual I also love that "signature" voice of yours, and your instrumentation was the perfect compliment to this beautiful song.

I always look forward to your songs Scott! You are just so talented and ingenious.

Thanks for sharing this....and giving me a smile.

Gail

Dang - I found a jillion songs by the title Life Goes On that it didn't occur to me to check It Goes On and On and On. grin

Thanks Moker - a comment like that coming from an artist with your mad skills is a real compliment!

Yeah, summer is flying by - gonna get busy again in another month. Will try to have some fun first. smile

Appreciate it, Moker.

Hi Beth:

Thanks. After five years, I'm finally starting not to hate the sound of my voice. A few more years and I might even come to like it. grin

Rosy cheeked maidens in a field? Works for me..... smile

Thanks for the suggestion on that line. It's a good starting point. I do want to keep the internal rhyme there though - the music needs it. Hmmmm - I'm thinking smile

Thanks Beth!

Hi Tom:

That's kind of my background too. Listened to a lot of pop/rock but played mostly folk. Putting them together, 30 years later, is fun smile

Thanks!

Hi Scott,

This lyric made me tear up, I love it...and the music is damn nice too.

I like how you peel away the instruments at the end, all the inner rhymes, the bridge harmonies, it's perfect. smile

Thanks Mike!

Like most folks (I reckon) I always hear the flaws in my own stuff. Is nice to hear that something comes across in spite of them smile

I'm happy it moved you smile
