Well that article certainly stated the obvious. Here are my 5.
1. Skill and expertise in being able to work the various gizmos and programs and how to record, edit, master and back it up properly. 2. Musical knowledge and a good ear. 3. The necessary DAW and said gizmos etc. 4. Good material with at least one decent musician who knows how to produce the sounds needed. 5. Luck and money. Lots of it.

Here are my top 5:
1. Reference monitors, the best you can afford. 2. Mics, a variety. 3. Mixer, big enough with room to spare. 4. ProTools, or facimile thereof. 5. Cheap P.O.S. boombox.

I'm gonna throw in...
8. Air Conditioning. It's so muggy where I'm at right now. Every summer, the studios that don't have A/C in Washington State are like saunas. The more people you have in the studio, the worse it gets.

I got a lava lamp as a gift once. When my son was about 7 we were both looking at the lamp when he said to me, "So Dad, is this what you did in the seventies?" Cracked me up. But yeah! Its essential studio gear...

My #1 most valuable thing to have in a studio: TALENT! Everything else can simply be bought. It's kind of hard to buy talent, although you can rent it...

Just wanted to say I'm enjoying this thread. I vote for the lava lamp, because without it, you will sound terrible. I like it so much I really need to write a song about one. Calvin http://www.soundclick.com/bands/0/calvinstewart

I have a lava lamp. Nobody ever said anything about having to turn it on. Thanks, Joice.

My studio, which I built for under ten bucks out in the garage, has only the lava lamp (and the electricity to run it, of course). I am doing without everything else, including talent. I'll let you know how it goes...

I forgot to mention:
a flashlight.
(this is so you can read the lyrics when you are in your homemade vocal booth)
(also handy for checking connections behind/underneath desks)

Vikki, I thought I could use the lava lamp for that. I don't want to have to put in another outlet. (Oops. Flashlights don't need outlets, do they? Or do they?)

I hate to suggest this (because I think you're right, Sub, on all counts), but can't a lava lamp be made to beat in time? I don't remember...

joe Hi Joe I have a lava in the control room, but the gear always makes it too hot in here to begin with so no need to turn on a heat lamp such as a lava lamp Only on computers do they move in time lol... the real ones do what they want, usually slow and sticky lol..

Now for the most important things technically & physically
1- A decent mixing board
2- Mic Pre - This is what makes and breaks your sound
3- Microphones - They are the way in, so.....
4- Monitors - Must be pure so your sound is honest.
5- Computer - As much as thy aggravate me to no end. for most this is where EVERYTHING lies. So a solid system. But MOST important! It's better to use the hell out of a cheap setup with little then do nothing with a real expensive one.
Lets not forget the INSTRUMENTS as top priority. Good musical equipment and who's using it is EVERYTHING!
