First of all, a big thanks to Steve Biederman, Mike Zaneski, Calvin Stewart, Louis Twinn and Colin Ward for forming the male chorus for this. You guys are the best I wanted at least one sea shanty for my public domain project. I was considering "Boston Harbour", "Sloop John B", and "Blow the Man Down". When I was researching them though, I came across this song on Roger McGuinn's Folk Den site and fell in love with it. It fits in better with the other songs too Some more poking around on i-tunes led to some very different versions. Mine is different too - I made up my own melody for the chorus - though I suspect it's been used elsewhere. The verse melody is similar to the version on the Folk Den site except for some minor changes. Changed a couple of the words too - it's a folk song, right? The song is in a call and response format and the guys listed above all agreed to form the chorus part. I think I have to refine the mix a little but its close enough to post. The song has gone by different names including "Clear the Track", "Let the Bullgine Run", and "Eliza Lee". Anyway, whatever it's called, my version is here: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=377550&songID=7617000I'll post the lyric below if you're curious. Don't be put off by its length - it's barely 3 minutes long. By the way, "bullgine" is slang for "engine". The Margaret Evans was one of the first commercial ships that guaranteed delivery. Thanks, Scott Clear the Track (Let the Bullgine Run) Public Domain O the smartest clipper you can find A ho way ho are you 'most done Is the Margo Evans of the Blue Cross Line So clear the track and let the bullgine run O we're outward bound for New York Town A ho way ho are you 'most done Them bowery gals we'll waltz around So clear the track and let the bullgine run Clear the track and let the bullgine run To me hey rig-a-jig and a three by three A ho way ho are you 'most done With Liza Lee all on my knee So clear the track and let the bullgine run Clear the track and let the bullgine run When we've stowed our freight at the West Street Pier A ho way ho, are you 'most done It's home to Liverpool we'll steer So clear the track and let the bullgine run When we all get back to Liverpool town A ho way ho are you 'most done I'll stand ye whiskies all around So clear the track and let the bullgine run Clear the track and let the bullgine run To me hey rig-a-jig and a three by three A ho way ho are you 'most done With Liza Lee all on my knee So clear the track and let the bullgine run Clear the track and let the bullgine run O Liza Lee will you be mine A ho way ho are you 'most done I'll dress you up in silk so fine So clear the track and let the bullgine run Clear the track and let the bullgine run To me hey rig-a-jig and a three by three A ho way ho are you 'most done With Liza Lee all on my knee So clear the track and let the bullgine run Clear the track and let the bullgine run And when I'm home again from sea, A -ho, way-ho, are you 'most done Oh Liza, will you marry me So clear the track and let the bullgine run I'll stay with you upon the shore A -ho, way-ho, are you 'most done And back to sea will go no more So clear the track let the bullgine run Clear the track and let the bullgine run

Ahoy there Scott (and Steve and Mike and Calvin and Louis and Colin)! Well, it sounds to me like you boys had way too much fun with this. Does poor Liza know that these five scalliwags are part of the package? For some reason, I see this as a skit on SNL -- I know it's intended as a serious song...but the idea of you all with those loose fitting pirate shirts and knickers got me snickering. That aside, Scott, I was impressed with how well your vocal suited the song. I know it's not a pirate song, but I kept waiting for an "ARRRRRRR, matey". So nice job all around, and good luck with it. I think it's terrific how everyone stepped up for your chorus -- just be sure to let us know when the video is coming out! Tootles, Beth P.S. Forgot to ask -- what's a Bullgine?

Sounds great Scott. Love that gruff sounding voice of yours. It's got what I call "texture". Glad I could participate and was flattered you asked. I want a CD when it's done.

LOL - I was gonna throw one of those in, Beth I don't know that I see it as a serious song - I actually saw the same kind of video in my head as you did. OK - maybe not the knickers. But cool hats and puffy shirts It WAS fun Thanks! Scott P.S. According to Wikipedia, bullgine is slang for engine.

jm Hi Joice: Of course, I'll send you one. Thanks for asking. I'm pleased with the chorus. It so happened that Calvin and Louis both sang it an octave lower than the rest of the guys - giving it a fuller sound. It's not easy to pick out individual voices but it's really obvious that something is missing if you mute one of them. Was actually the exact effect I was looking for... Glad you liked! Scott

Scott,
Pretty darned impressive! The call and response really came out nicely. It's not a song I'm familiar with and I typically do not care much for folks music at all. But this one is good. Enjoyed it!

Alan Thanks Alan - glad you enjoyed! I've only got one more of these folk songs up my sleeve and then I'll probably go back to pop/rock for a little while - unless the other sleeve fills up. Scott

Hi Scott, Wow, you really spread us out all around there, cool! You voice really sounds the part in this, like you're "clearing the track" yourself... and singing. Scott, your PD project is nearly finished, and it's all solid work, all enjoyable, all the songs are different enough from each other to make the project as a whole very satisfying! I don't have Itunes hooked up, but I'm sure CD Baby will get this too...Such a fun, great group of tunes, all with your remarkable musicianship bringing them to life!!! Mike

Hi all of you,
You probably know I can't hear too well right now, so I will come back on a better computer and listen again. But from what I hear, I am going to really like hearing this right.
Oh gees, I want to hear this so bad, I hear some things I love even garbled and I can't jiggle the headphone right anymore.
Is there a computer person in here?

LoL That would be great fun, Joice. Only two problems: (1) Getting us all together (2) Getting Louis to wear a puffy shirt The first is probably easier than the second.... But we'll keep it in mind! I wouldn't have embarked on it had I not been encouraged by you and other folks here. Thanks both for that and for helping me out with this song. Scott

Hi Scott,
This would have been great anyway, but adding all those manly voices in the chorus has put it over the top! Another excellent addition to your wonderful project, Scott. Just how much can you get up in one of those puffy sleeves?

Great sound. I can smell the salt air and see the waves. The vocals in the lead are very effective in combination with the backup vocals. The contrast in tone gives it a great sound.

Flannel puffy shirts, Wendy? That's a whole new image for me. It's just crazy enough to work. LOL - usually when someone uses the word "please" in connection with my singing, the word "stop" is also present Be my pleasure to send you a CD when it's finished. Might be a little while yet but I'm keeping a list Thanks Wendy! Scott

Hiya Scott
Been a while since I have been on here, pleased I popped by and spotted this, this is just great, hooked me from the off. Brilliant recording quality in every respect, the vocals are just spot on. I love the old sea shanty type stuff being from naval stock and all that, the Royal Navy that is.

I am back! New computer and you all sound so good. I couldn't wait to come back and listen to this one, as I could'nt hear voices and barely any music on my old computer.
Scott, your music is always exceptionally interesting, you are a very talented musician and produce a great sound.
You all did a great job!

Kristi Thanks Kristi. I have this idea for a video where the lead singer is walking around the ship singing and the crew (also the chorus) is constantly pulling him out of trouble (like out of the way of a swinging boom) while he remains totally oblivious. Think it would be funny..... Glad you thought it was fun... Scott

Hi all you guys,
I am back! New computer and you all sound so good. I couldn't wait to come back and listen to this one, as I could'nt hear voices and barely any music on my old computer.
Scott, your music is always exceptionally interesting, you are a very talented musician and produce a great sound.
You all did a great job!
Letha Hi Letha! Thanks for coming back. And for the very sweet words Scott

This is a great little PD song. The vocals all sound great and the instrumentation is solid. You are really improving on your banjo playing, Scott. I haven't done any banjo stuff in awhile. I might need to break it back out before 50/90 starts.
Sorry, I missed the invite. Maybe when the next couple of weeks are over, I'll be able to get involved again.

Wonderful. Think the pause after Liza on the knee should be a great deal shorter. Great smooth chorus singing complements Scott's voice. Great combination. I love sea shanties.

Not very often I listen to songs on here more than once as there are that many and each deserves at least one listen. I'm pleased I took the time to have another listen to this one.

Kevin We missed you Kevin. Catch you next time! Thanks on the banjo - it's been getting quite a workout since December, when I started on this.... Good luck on your project. Scott

I agonized over that pause. Almost had it shorter - but it seemed like a good time to introduce a breather (literally and figuratively). Maybe I should do a couple with a short rest and a couple with a long one just to change things up. I'll think on it. Appreciate it! Scott
