Hi Folks,
Just thought I'd suggest a couple of fantastic indie films I've seen recently.
The first is Frozen River. Melissa Leo stars and was nominated as Best Actress for her 100% believable portrayal of a poor mother with 2 kids who desperately needs money to pay off her much dreamed about Double Wide. This is not a comedy but a very serious drama and the acting, writing, cinematography, editing and everything else is spot on. It's not really an upper movie, but it will give you glimpse into what poverty in the USA looks like and what it often leads to. It's available on Demand on cable systems and also on DVD.
The second is "Let the right one in" which is a Swedish Vampire movie that is unlike any you've ever seen. It's an all new take and I don't want to give any of it away. It is set in the 1980's Sweden which was under communist rule at the time and very oppressed. The cinematography is perfect as is the set design and the acting by the young cast is perfect for the storyline. It is subtitled, though if you get the DVD you can watch the English dubbed version which isn't great but it's a valid option if you're not into reading movies. If you like Vampire movies or films that are set in an otherworldly place that really existed (communist Europe circa 1980) you should check it out. It has some indie move limitations (like special effects and some editing) that are a bit weak but the story line and vibe more than make up for the limitations. They are already remaking it for the USA and it probably won't have the character that this version has.
Big thumbs up on both!
Enjoy,
Brian

That's funny, Brian. We just happen to have Frozen River from Netflix just sitting on top of our TV waiting to be watched. Thanks for the great review - we'll be sure to watch it.
Cheers,
Barry
