Okay, Folks, here's the selection poll. Please choose 3 choices from the list, and that's what we'll cover. Anyone can vote, whether they plan to take on the challenge or not. We have a nice selection of finished songs, lyrics with no music, and instrumentals with no lyrics. Whichever one wins, that's what our brave composers will cover, whether we have to finish the writing part or not. smile

All the choices can be viewed here:

http://www.jpfolks.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/698512/page/1#Post698512

The poll will expire Wednesday night at 10pm CST, so vote now!

Choices
multiple choice, up to 3 choices
Votes accepted starting: 03/09/09 02:44 PM
You must vote before you can view the results of this poll.

I agree, Polly!

By the way, if we end up picking an already composed song, it would be nice if the composer were to post the chords for us. But let's see what happens first.

I agree, Mark. I gotta have that stuff--I'm mostly tone-deaf, and can't figure it out from listening.

No prob, John.

You know, looking at all these votes, for those who are voting because they want to cover certain songs, don't forget that beyond this challenge, maybe you want to PM the writer and collaborate anyway. It would be great if this was also a catalyst for a few new partnerships that might otherwise not have happened. smile

Here's a radio station of the 11 songs with music on soundclick: http://members.soundclick.com/station/725457 . If I missed any, let me know. You'll have to go to thread that Mark listed at the top to see the lyrics only songs.

John,

I only included the songs on the station that had music. The six songs "missing" are lyric-only (unless I did miss a music one).

The one doing the cover has one song for the 1st half, and the other for the second!

It's looking likely, isn't it?

I suggest we panic.

Or I could do a daylong runoff poll. But only after a lengthy and expensive recount...see, that's just the way it goes here in Minnesota.

Next time is it possible to only have one vote each...That way we are voting for our favourite and not cancelling out votes by voting for three different songs.

WARNING: SHAMELESS, NON-SUBTLE HINT AHEAD

Just a friendly reminder that those songs which happen not to be chosen in the final tally, are still available <ahem> for possible collaborative opportunities. wink whistle

Carry on.

Hey Mark,

Thanks for organizing all of this... smile

I do think Jim's point is valid, though, about the multiple voting. What happens if there's a tie for instance? crazy

I also wish there was some way to do this without names -- but everyone has such a distinctive sound/style, perhaps that's improbable.

Also, it only makes sense that those songs already musicated are a bit easier to imagine covering, since we hear at least one rendition. Would it be feasible, if you were to do this again (I didn't know if you were alternating b/w "famous" and the "Regular JPF" songs) to just post lyrics? EVEN IF music exists? Obviously, that's helpful for lyricists blush ...but might give the musicators an opportunity to post a song they just haven't been able to get their heads around musically. Even if the musicators posted a lyric where we might have already heard the music....maybe ask everyone to try to refrain from going to listen to it (Scout's Honor, and all that?)

Perhaps even this way, everyone could just PM to you the lyrics -- and you could post them without names? I'm not sure you'll ever get an even playing field with something like this, because at the end of the day it is a subjective poll.... And it may be too far off course from what you were trying to do with this challenge to begin with...

I dunno....just rambling...taking any opportunity to keep my fingers typing about SOMETHING crazy .

Anyway, thanks again Mark!!

Beth

Mark and Jim... Thanks very much for doing this you guys!!!....

Just had a thought.. For those just tuning in?
would it be good to say in the paragraph at the top......

.. songs ready to cover, lyrics looking for music, instrumentals looking for lyrics......etc......

best....

Beth this all came about as just a fun exercise...not really a competitive thing...more a chance to get outside our own comfort zones and try something new and different..... maybe meet and correspond with new people...make new friends.... form partnerships...take on a challenge...I think it has achieved all that and perhaps even more....I would like to see this as a regular thing...encourage more people to venture into the unknown....but most of all have a laugh and joke...everyone who takes part even in a small way are ALL winners...THERE ARE NO LOSERS IN THIS CHALLENGE...LOL
If this challenge is successful then we can chop and change the format and rules as we go for future ones......it is all a learning curve...another tool...
Hopefully it will make us all better songwrtiters and people in every way....get the old community spirit back.

I like the playful spirit Mark and Jim have set up - sure would hate to see it turned into a competition - anyway, for what it's worth, - I'd be less inclined if it becomes too competitive.

Spot on JM....There is nothing wrong with a bit of FUN and the competition part is only friendly banter with nothing at stake except each of us trying to do our best and to get better through the experience....I will never let it be anything else....We are all doing this to help and encourage each other....

I better choose fast -- it's a pretty tough one, though. I'll make sure my vote is in by tonight. Maybe next time we do a lyric-only. ... and then after that, do a composition that needs lyrics. The possibilities are endless.

Hi Jim,

Like I said to Mark, I think the idea of this cover challenge is great -- and I don't have any interest in making it a "competition" either. I guess my lack of practise writing around here must have led to some confusion on that front -- because no, I'm all about the fun possibilities....

I guess what I was getting at is that there's going to be some natural favoritism.....and, if someone is submitting a lyric only, I think that song is less likely to be selected. So I was just talking out loud, trying to figure out a way to work around some of that.

I understand it's all intended in good fun...and I'm sure you'll be playing around with the parameters over time....I just wanted to add my two cents for consideration -- in the name of...well... fairness.

Anyhoo, regardless of which song is selected, I look forward to hearing the various musications. smile

Ciao for now,
Beth

Beth: I think you are right. That's why maybe the next one should be lyric-only. In any case, I am forcing myself to choose at least one lyric only as part of my three.

Done! I picked the front-runner and two bottom of the heapers.

I'm a little confused...from the start we wanted to put this in everyone's hands, from voluntarily offering up songs to do, to putting them all up for vote...lyrics, compositions, songs...to anonymous, blind voting for which one to do. I'm not sure where favoritism comes in...not even sure who the favorites are supposed to be. Truth is, I think the songs with the best chance of getting selected would be the ones that are easiest for people of various experience levels to cover.

Why did I decide to have three choices? So that people would vote for more than just themselves...I figured that would give more advantage to more people, and less chance of a 17-way tie.

But yes, fun is the name of the game here. One thing that is pretty much impossible is to come up with a challenge that everyone agrees upon...that thread we were on a couple weeks ago got so convoluted and full of second guessing that I finally told Big Jim let's stop looking for consensus and just make a choice. grin Sorry, that's the General Manager side of me...I can't stand waiting around for a group decision. Sorry!

That poll looks like a horse race!

Would be funny to have a voice over of a race announcer when someone opens up this page! LOL

Thanks Mark...yes we decided to crack on and get it underway before interest dropped....there will, I hope, be an operchancity (Scottish word.... speaks for itself)to try out other challenges with different formats in the future and hopefully all suggestions will be taken on board...We cannot please evryone all the time.....heck if we could do that we would be in politics instead of music...we will try to please most and keep these challenges interesting....remember though it is a bit of fun and a challenge to test yourselves not a popularity contest or a serious competition for the best song or cover. Only a few hours left so please if you have not already voted get voting for the song you think will prove to be the best test for all to cover......

Around the last turn and heading for home, it's Operchancity in the lead!

I liked the idea that we got three choices, because I picked the three I thought that I could do well. Maybe that's the wrong way to go about it, maybe I was supposed to pick ones that were more of a challenge, but Hell, I'm so self-critical I would have been in a heap on the floor iffin I picked songs I didn't think I could cover, and as this is my cherry popper, I wanted something relatively easy. I'm a newbie, so I was hoping more newbies would join in. This was very user friendly, so I would hope that the rules of it wouldn't change much. Having three songs to choose from increases the odds of the song you want being chosen.

Wow Jim, you guys sure have some weird words over on your side of the pond!

Hey Kaufman...I like that Vanilla Ice avatar. He looks really good there!:D

Will be cool to hear Scott Campbell's winning song, "Champion", covered by JPF!

Congrats Scott!

Scott, if you're listening, congratulations. I'm going to need chords for this--I detect some fruity chords in there.

OK......Scott's "Champion" it is...everybody get recording...we will post details later of how and when to enter. Scott why not do an alternative version of the song just to keep your hand in and compete.

PS If anybody fancies tackling any of the other entries as a bonus or extra piece of "homework" outside the challenge that should not be a prob but PM the writers to get permission first.

Ok, Scotts' tune it is. Can we have a simple chord chart ? Just saves time on working it out.

cheers, niteshift

Does this mean we have to use the same chords?

Hi Ricki....The original idea was to cover it any which way...how you do that is up to you, best of luck.

Yeah, as for Scott, you could do another version of it, or maybe you want to try out someone else's song? Whatever you wish. smile

Question: Since I don't play an instrument (well, I do, but badly) can I have one of my friends do the song with me if he joins the site? Also, I'm assuming I can change the key of the song.
