Okay, 94 votes were cast and the Top 8 looks like this: Bohemian Rhapsody 7% Subterranean Homesick Blues 5% Born to Run 5% My Way 5% Nowhere Man 4% Free Bird 4% Imagine 4% Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite 4% So that's what's in the poll. Choose ONE. Come Monday morning, we'll pick the uncoverable song that any and all are invited to try and cover on their own, in any way they deem doable. Be it doable or doo-a-bull, a splendid time is guaranteed for all. Vote now, and vote Often! Tell all your rivals!

Thanks again Mark (and Jim for stiring us all up). There are actually 2 songs on there that I quite fancy doing, I hope one of them comes in For a list of supposedly 'uncoverable' songs, there is one song in there that is probably challenging Yesterday for the title of 'most covered'!! but thankfully it won't win

You are quite correct Nigel. I also hope that //??????..... will not win. I have had to sing it thousands of times. Was surprised that it was there in the first place. I would do the punk version if it was chosen.

It's interesting that the highest selected one in the first poll is one of the lowest selected ones now.

That's a phenomena I see a lot in the awards. If you just add up nothing but first place votes, different songs or albums would win awards than when you add up the combined 1st through 5th place votes. Not 100% of the time, but often.
So which is better.. something that 10 people think is the 3rd best song.. or something that 2 people think is the best, but 8 don't like? That's always a question we ask ourselves during the awards.

Great Fun, Bro Mark!
Interesting to see Which One'd rather be SUNG...heh! The "Leader" doesn't seem too-hard-to-do..NOW...(much as it Would've been great fun singin' that falsetto "Galeleo-Figaro-o-o" & "Scottamooshin'" our way through THAT Previous 'Toughie'...)
So Where should the Non-Digitized send a Cassette to? ;-)>
Best wishes for this Fun Project, Amigo(s), Big Guy-Hug, Stan

I love the two that are in 1st and 2nd place so far. One of them was one of my initial 3 votes. Even though I voted for "Bohemian..." in the first poll, I hope one these two wins.
I have no way to participate other than by voting, so I wish everybody lots of success. And, Mark and Jim, I'll add my thanks to both of you for launching this thing.

Thanks for all the thanks, but I'm thanking Big Jim, who made this happen...I just knew how to set up polls. Last night I had to promise my daughter that no matter what wins, I STILL have to cover "Bohemian Rhapsody", so I plan to do that one one of these days whether or not it wins. I find the current number one very surprising...and, in fact, it's probably the most "uncoverable" one of the bunch. Seriously...who would DO that song?? What a moron!

It's Sunday, the last day for people to vote on an "Uncoverable" song! Right now, it's still anybody's guess and a couple votes here or there could change everything. The poll shuts itself down at around midnight Sunday night, I believe. (CST)
Remember, anyone can vote, and you don't even have to admit it. But once a song is picked by the voters, those of us who are willing are going to cover it however we see fit and post the results. Should be mighty interesting!
And what if there is a tie? Hmm...didn't think about that...

Well....there were 94 votes cast, but everyone could cast up to three...so it may have been 30-something. But either way, it's free and non-obligatory to vote, folks, so let 'er rip. Which one do YOU want to hear?

Lots of folks have covered "Nowhere Man" including the Carpenters, Paul Westerberg, Randy Travis, Mortal, Dokken, Ron Sexsmith, Vikki Carr, Natalie Merchant, Sherbet, Bob Dylan, and my personal favorite cover version, Tiny Tim: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tlp8OJYOy-w

Yes, Big Jim is very sensitive, like a delicate flower he is. Mike, over the course of these threads that began by discussing "uncoverable" songs, I think we've long since realized there is no such thing. Now it has morphed into a simple challenge to take one of these songs and show us what you would do with it. Should be a lot of fun, with a lot of different styles. I will say that of the 8 songs listed, no one else has come close to knocking the definitive version off the top of the heap. ...except perhaps for the Sex Pistols' version of "My Way"...

So we appear to have a winner. "Nowhere Man". Get recording..... entries to be placed on Ourstage for March Covers comp. I will start a thread towards the end of Feb so that we know how many official entries we have and a separate thread for comments and discussion. It might also be an idea to have our own poll to select which version JPF contributors prefer. I think this challenge will be a lot of fun as well as educational and entertaining. I wish everybody who takes part all the luck in the world...some of us might need it LOL. I would like to thank Mark for his work in setting up the polls and everyone who contributed with comments and song suggestions.

So the clear winner is "Nowhere Man" by the Beatles! I'll hand the reins back to Big Jim now (you may want to start a new thread for the submissions), but first, here is a "Nowhere Man" Care Package to help us get our bearings. Here's the original version, in hallucinogenic color: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHLjYBsl2zA...and a live version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cj6zHzTumESee, it's not so hard. Why, even a child could do it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwuFl3Mf5xwOr The Carpenters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42A5zDHdwqc..or Bob Dylan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2U5j7f3FO4Heck, if you wanted, you could even play it on kalimba: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbAdLFeUPIIHere is some background on the song: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nowhere_Man_(song) ...and some fun songfacts: http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=88So good luck to all! Here are the lyrics: Nowhere ManHe's a real nowhere man, Sitting in his nowhere land, Making all his nowhere plans for nobody. Doesn't have a point of view, Knows not where he's going to, Isn't he a bit like you and me? Nowhere man, please listen, You don't know what you're missing, Nowhere man, the world is at your command. He's a blind as he can be, Just sees what he wants to see, Nowhere man can you see me at all? Nowhere man, don't worry, Take your time, don't hurry, Leave it all till somebody else lends you a hand. Doesn't have a point of view, Knows not where he's going to, Isn't he a bit like you and me? Nowhere man, please listen, You don't know what you're missing, Nowhere man, the world is at your command. He's a real nowhere man, Sitting in his nowhere land, Making all his nowhere plans for nobody, Making all his nowhere plans for nobody, Making all his nowhere plans for nobody.

Brian I had a PM from him where the content was exactly the same as the post in this thread. I assumed he didn't single me out, and also thought it odd that he posted in this particular thread.

Some of us can't sing, and would like to do a derivitave, if that's allowed. cheers, niteshift Sorry, Geoff, I don't. But that first link from Yellow Submarine is the original version. I highly recommend buying the UK version of Rubber Soul...well worth it, an excellent CD that you'll wear out if you like it as much as I do.

Rubber Soul and Revolver . I got the UK version of both albums for Christmas, Mark, after having the US vinyl versions years ago. Some of the songs I hadn't heard in a very long time. I ditto your recommendation.

PS - "Nowhere Man" ? Yep, that could be my theme song ! Sigh...... will have to do this, just to get over the depressing nature of the lyrics. How about Australian Reggae Shuffle ? That might cheer it up a bit. cheers, niteshift

Somebody remind me again why we aren't posting all these versions of Nowhere Man right here on a thread?

My understanding is that we post them all on Ourstage for the March competition - in the covers category. I don't want to post it on soundclick because I don't want to have to deal with the fact that it's a cover. I've heard that Ourstage has that covered. (ha - a pun) I'll send it to you before long for mastering, Sub. Scott

Scott: Soundclick has "Cover Song" sections in most genres to handle this.
