Hey Neo,
My ex-husband was the lead singer in an 80's rock band called "King Kobra." His drummer was Carmine Apice, who played with many famous rock and metal bands. We were in the middle of Los Angeles during the rise of metal and the glam rock bands. What a great time that was.

Anyway, the first thing I'd say is to look at the emotion that is most common to metal songs. From what I recall, there were a ton of angry lyrics. I don't listen to metal anymore, so I could be wrong. But, when I was writing back then, the words were fast-paced like bullets (unless a ballad). I remember Dio, Ozzy and such. Years later, out came bands like Korn. I still saw a ton of angry, fast-paced lyrics.

Did you see the movie, "Rock Star," with Mark Wahlberg? I thought that was a good stereotype of the genre's writing. I think it's very brave of you to take on writing metal. Best of luck!!!

Heidi

Well, a writer who's willing to take on a genre that has suffered more negativity from the moral majority than any other, including hip hop.
That, my friend, must be admired.

However, to answer your question, no....there is no standard formula to write lyrics that appeal to and/or even suggest a particular genre.
If anyone ever tries to tell you any different, then they just don't have a grasp on the concept of versatility and independent creativity.

If you really want your lyrics to sound like Dio, Ozzy, Judas Priest or whoever, then you are free to follow what has already been done, but if you are solely intent on presenting your own orginal work to a band, then by all means WRITE YOUR OWN ORIGINAL WORK.

Case in point, look at Evanescence.

I have been writing lyrics for 30 years, and in my own opinion, some of my work could and should be recorded by a metal band, but that's not how I will present my work to the wide open world of music. I offer my own work as is, and the musician who sees it and contacts me about a project is the one who thought that what I have written fits whatever kind of music that he plays.
I have submitted pieces that are structured as a lyric, some that are free flowing verse, and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
To be labeled, categorized, typecast and otherwise boxed in is to cheat yourself out of the rewards that may be awaiting the writer who is not set upon one singular genre, and is equally available to all comers who might show interest.

I do indeed wish all the best of luck and everything good to you in all of your efforts, but I just feel that, for whatever it's worth, limiting yourself to any one genre or type of music is not what creative writing is all about......it's about freedom, right?

Heidi, I saw King Kobra open for KISS back in the 80's! Neo, if you have to ask, I can't tell you, but I would suggest minor keys.

Bob,
That's so great! The singer, Mark Free, was my first husband. He has such an amazing instrument!

Interesting reference there... wink

In all seriousness, neo, how goes the metal lyrics experiment, and Heidi, how goes the Vegas show ventures?

Neo,
All you need to do is see if there are any common denominators in the lyrics of metal such as anger, lots of syllables, etc.

If you are going to write something for a specific audience who already has a track record for what they like, then you want to make sure you give them those things which they expect and like.

It's just common sense. I'm sure you'll do just fine and I look forward to seeing what you write very soon!

Meanwhile, I just got off the phone with my ex and we are going to do a recording project together. Cool, huh?

hey sam,

first of all thanks for the admiration..and support ! smile as i have mentioned above i used to be huge Linkin Park fan. but now they suck..lol

the main thing in Metal lyrics i have seen is despair, blood, satanism, evil, anti-christ stuff..so my question is, is it the key ingredient to write metal lyrics..?

yeah, i also believe not to be genre specific..one should be open to all kinda stuff as far as music is concern..i even enjoy country songs for some good lyric inspiration..but mostly i m into metal..!!

thanks Sam smile

You can also go the Van Halen/AC/DC/KISS route and write songs about partying and chasing tail!

Just like any genre of music there are LOTS of sub categories.. there are MANY types of metal.. what kind of metal do you like? (what bands) Most Metal acts write MOSTLY in a particular vein.. Metal is typically about anger, agresion, sex, rebellion, politics, religion, etc. etc. etc. You can write about whatever moves you, but If you want to write Metal think about HOW the music makes you feel.. the energy.. the mood... etc. etc. the... topics that stir those same emotions in you are probably the best to cover in your metal lyrics... it's good to have the music re-enforce the lyrics... and vice versa.

good luck with your Metal.. I look forward to seeing some metal lyrics posted on the boards!
