What Love Really Means (was called What A Friend's Love Means) ©2008 Shayne Vaughan
I'm tired of wakin up to a world that's filled with pain Wish the worries could be washed away by a good hard rain And the homeless could somehow live in a nice new home And the hungry could sit down somewhere in front of a big T-bone
Chorus: But wishing alone won't accomplish anything We've gotta show those in need... What Love Really Means
I can't stop wonderin' how long this war will last Wish I had a magic wand to make the problem pass Wish that I could hear good news when I turn on my TV And that everything in the Daily Times was a constant joy to read
Chorus: But wishing alone won't accomplish anything We've gotta show those in need... What Love Really Means
Bridge: Love means going that extra mile Whatever it takes to bring a gentle smile Just try and put yourself in their place And think of all the struggles that they face
Chorus: Wishing alone won't accomplish anything We've gotta show those in need... What Love Really Means
Tag: I want to show those in need... What my love means

Shayne, I like the concept, the emotion, and the descriptions. However, I'd like to see a progression from first telling that you're going to show what love means to actually showing it. Perhaps a verse (or tweaks in the existing verses) to give concrete examples? For instance, sitting down to a cafe meal with someone homeless who's hungry, or paying for someone's bed for a week at a shelter for the homeless, being extra kind to a neighbour you might not normally get on with, and so on. That way it might make the song more memorable, and inspire listeners to follow the singer's example. Just a thought. KOS. Donna

Thanks Donna. You raise a good point, but I want to wait and see what the others say as well, before changing a lot. I did change the bridge, as I felt I needed to say something about what a friend's love means.

Hi Shayne, I like the sentiment here. Nice hook. I’m thinking the chorus is too short. It needs to contrast with the verses, but even just adding a few words....what if you added some details of what a friend’s love means there instead of in the bridge? That way it gets repeated. In the bridge there are all kinds of ways to go, but you could always tap into what it does for the narrator to be a good friend. Just throwing out ideas… Kristi

Good Thanksgiving morning, Shayne. Hope this is a good day for you and yours. I, too, like the sentiment that you've expressed in this lyric, and agree with most of the suggestions you've already received. I think the chorus probably needs to be beefed up a little bit to help support your over all premise. One problem I had was with the idea of A FRIEND's LOVE to talk about such things as hunger, war and homelessness. While there's nothing to say you can't be friends with people in these situations (and truly we should be), the expression makes me think of a relationship between actual friends. The title/hook made me think the song was going to be about something else entirely. I think I would simply change the title/hook to something like "What Love Really Means". It would put more emphasis on love, which I think is more appropriate than friendship, and not affect the message you're trying to tell one bit. Just a thought to consider or ignore. Good luck. Greg

Hey Shayne, Love the idea here. I'd like to see something more concrete though. Giving to the homeless, donating to the victim of a fire, taking the elderly neighbor to the dr. There's always something we could be doing, but we don't always do it. This is a great opportunity to throw out some suggs to listeners, never know what they'd do with that warm fuzzy feeling....
