This is one of two songs that Mike Dunbar and his "dream team" worked their magic on for me at the 2008 Demo Derby in Nashville. I wanted it to have that oldie/retro flavor, so needless to say they didn't let me down. Again, a big thank you to all involved, and also to Heather Cowles for her beautiful vocals. (The lyrics are listed on the Soundclick page if you are interested.) I absolutely love how this song turned out. JUST FOR FUN, turn up the music, close your eyes and picture this video as you listen... The video is mostly done in black and white reflecting the past(w/color at certain times) and as the song is being sung it jumps back and forth between the singer on stage and the girl in the story (who are one and the same). 1st verse- Scene 1- She is in her bedroom where she is primping in front of her vanity w/those big pink curlers in hair, painting her nails bright red, and getting ready for the "big date" etc. only to find her beau is late again(as usual). He finally shows, sweeps her off her feet, and all is soon forgotten. They leave her house and on the way out he catches a glimpse of himself in the hallway mirror and combs back his dark thick wave of Bobby Darin style hair as he's done a hundred times before. They drive off in a 57 Chevy and cruise on down to the malt shop, etc. where other girls are eyeing him and he's eyeing them back (thinking she doesn't notice, etc.) During the 2 Refrains of the song, it's back to her on stage singing at a 50's type dancehall, w/band members dressed ala Buddy Holly style, as she is looking out onto the crowd of couples dancing, then during the verses it's the story being played out. You get the idea "I'm Just A Fool Who's In Love" [size:8pt][size:8pt](c)2008 Lynn Orloff http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6960579

This is super, Lynn - sounds like a classic! Everything works together on this - the music, Heather's vocal and the lyric. I wish more people would record stuff like this - it has universal appeal.
Lovely song....

Thanks Scott! I'd love to write a classic because classics have longevity and that would just be a dream come true. Like you I wish there were more of this type of song out there because it brings back that "oldie" sound that was such a big part of musical history. (hey I haven't forgot about our song, pls forgive) Best, Lynn

HIDee Mz Lynn!~
Very Pleasant to listen to...Heather's Vocals are Excellent.
The Sax bits give it a '50's feel..to my ears. Whether this is Good or Not depends on the Artist who's contemplating cutting it. Oh..notice "Who's"...a contraction of "Who + Is"? That's what ya wanna change your title to..."Whose" is a Possessive Pronoun..alas. (As in "Whose Shoes are Those?"
I'd remove One Couplet from your End-of-Ending & Voila...an Overall REAL Good Song. Oh..Know It's Just Me...but the "Eyes/Hypnotize" rhyme also has that '50's feel..& it's just a bit too-often used ever-since.
Very Nice-Sounding Demo/Hats-Off to Mike & Cast & Crew & You~! Big Hugs, Stan
PS: NOW I read your Video Concept...so as Rosanne Rosanadana allus said.."Nevermind"..heh..alla the '50's sorty Negative Vibes in da Critique.

Great little period piece and recording. You should be proud -- everything turned out cool! Classic sound and Heather shows (again) that she can do a lot of styles. In fact her phrasing and overall sound made it seem that she was meant for this type of song.

Hi Lynn !! Well real nice to read your vision and see the film in your mind played out in the song. Everything works well in that regard. Could be a play period piece too. The demo sounds super. My very best wishes for you on placing it somewhere. Good luck pitching ! jm

Hi Vanessa, Where have you been hiding. I've noticed your absence. Good to have you still on the boards. I remember well when you had a demo done called "Froggy Bottom". I'm glad you enjoyed the song. Hope we see more from you. Best, Lynn

Stan as always you are on the ball. I wasn't totally comfortable w/the "whose" but wasn't sure. Went back into soundclick and made the changes as well as above. Those details are important so thanks Stan. I'm not sure I've heard a song where the heart was hypnotized before but hopefully there aren't too many if that's the case. Thanks for keeping me in check on the grammar issue, and yes the Sax was instrumental (pun intended) Best, Lynn

Hi Joice, For some reason I couldn't get the video out of my mind so I thought I'd share it just for fun. I can even picture the girl singing stage part of the video as a scene in the right movie. Oh well it's fun to dream. Thanks for listening. Best, Lynn

Hi Ande, "old timey" was exactly what we were going for. A "hit" from the 50's, now that's generous. Wonder if it could still be 50 years later?? You and Stan were right about the "whose" and it's now fixed. Thanks so much. Best, Lynn

Heather is continually unfolding. I think she could have made a wonderful big band vocalist. In this piece, I hear a little bit of Connie Francis in the phrase, "I know I've waited before." and a little bit of Crystal Gale in "Though they mean well, I ignore what they say."
Lynn, you're lyrical all right. This is a song from the 50's, I can hear it on our old Philco radio late at night listening to WLS.
Good work.
Mike

Hi Lynn, Nice one, as all have noted. Fits right in that 50's groove you were going for. No nits at all, lyrically, musically the whole package is tight. Before you send it anywhere, make sure you update your lyric sheet so that all the "whose" are "who's" Ricki

Hi Ricki, You reminded me of another reason I love this board. Sometimes it's our friends who see things we overlook that need addressing and your watchful eye did just that. I had gone back and fixed the "whose's" in the title, etc., BUT I had forgotten to change it in the lyrics. I really appreciate you drawing that to my attention as details are important. Thanks so much Ricki! Best, Lynn

Oooohhhh...Lynn, this turned out awesome!! I remember thinking when I listened to them cutting the tracks for this that it was going to be sensational..and that I figured you would love it. Knowing your love of the classics...this has JUST the right combination...great lyrics that paint evocative pictures...and a terrific melody with the right delivery by Ms Heather! I am enamored with John Heinrich's sax playing anyway...and he absolutely shines on this one! I am SO happy that you are delighted with this. This is what the Demo Derby is all about. These guys are not JUST country...they can play ANY style...they are simply pros...and Mike Dunbar...the guy is simply a genius.
Congratulations to all concerned.
Hugs, Bobbie

Ooooooh Bobbie, I was especially hoping you would get a chance to hear this in it's finished stage because you were there at Demo Derby, and I remembered you wrote on a previous post that I was going to love what the guys were doing. Well, once again you were right!!! Please don't think I'm in love w/this song because I wrote it, because trust me I have two demos from 2006 that aren't even mediocre, (I learned from my mistakes on those two), but this one is special to me. Every nite after work I come home and play it several times and enjoy each listen as though it was the first time I heard it!! I am glad you make the point about the guys being able to tackle all genres so that others might think hard about next year's derby and have a comfort level that the "dream team" can do it all and do it well! I hope John Heinrich and the guys got to hear the finished song as well. Thanks for your optimism, kind words, and help at the Derby! Best, Lynn

Hi again Lynn.. Well, I am also glad I got to hear the final mix on this. The tracks were terrific but the mix even exceeds my expectations which were high to begin with. I am so glad you posted this and that I saw it. I haven't been here much of late so I have missed a lot I am sure. Your reaction to this is something I can relate to...it has happened to me when I've gotten back music that just makes me fall in love with it all over again every time I hear it!! You just can't listen enough. I hope Mike gave each of the guys a copy of the songs. As you said..they sure deserve to hear the magic they have created. I've talked with John Heinrich since Pineyfest...and believe me...he is still enthused from the experience. I think they all are and deserve to be. It was an energizing couple of days for all concerned. I hope you can get placement for this in a film somewhere. That is the feel I get from this. Hugs, Bobbie

thanks again Bobbie, and yes I know you haven't been around as much as usual (hoping it's the move and your busy job and not health issues) but I would've emailed you to let you know it was posted if I hadn't seen you since you were at the Derby. I don't know that you've missed too many Derby songs since I only remember seeing the reggae one that Tom Shea posted "Baby I adore you" and I can't recall any others. In fact, where are they?? Hope your well.

Lynn and Company,
Wow! This is wonderful. Wish I could sing like Heather. She's got the chops. I could visualize the dress and the flashbacks showing her boyfriend with the roving eye. If this doesn't get a cut for country radio, there should be a place for it. I could see them even using this for a scene in something like Sex and the City or Mad Men. Don't forget, retro is cool and what's old can be new again. There's a whole generation of kids out there who have never even heard this style of music.

Hi Lynn, Heather, and company This is so amazing, I'm hooked line and sinker, go the girls, Yipee, when can I purchase this song. When I first joined JPF, there wasnt' many songs I got to listen to from the girls, but now, it seems that the girls are taking over the thread. Well nearly anyway. Heather, to hear this song, with the production behind your voice is absolutely beautiful. Lynn, fantastic lyrics, congratulations. Congratulations, great team effort. Michele Aussie fan

Hi Wendy, You do have a good voice. Heather and you each have your own unique sound and that's what makes the world go round. Your voice is really interesting. It makes me want to write a certain style song just so you could sing it. Thanks for your thoughts. Best, Lynn

Hi Michele, Well you already have your pocketbook open, that's a good sign that this song might have some commercial potential. I don't if the girls are taking over the boards per se but we are active lately. Thanks for always being such an enthusiastic soul. Best, Lynn

Hey Moker, Does sound like a jukebox tune. You just gave me an idea to add to the video (okay I know I'm dreaming here) but at the very beginning of the video someone walks up to the old time jukebox, pushes say C11 and they put a quarter in (or was it a dime back then??) and you watch the vinyl record go through it's process till all of sudden the music starts...and the story part of the video begins, yeah now you have me "cranked" up. Thanks!!! Best, Lynn

This song is as Cherry as a 57 Chevy! And Heather is starting to sound like star material.
I really wish I could have made the demo derby this summer. It was so gratifying to work with these amazing session players summer of 07. Mike, who did make the trip this year?

Hi Joe,
We did demos for Lynn, of course, Beth Williams, Jeff Epperson, Wyman Griffith, Joanne Lurgio, Pete Escalante, Lee Arten, John Crandall, John Selleck, Larry Reynolds, and Tom Shea.
Tom and Joanne have also posted a few songs some weeks ago.
It was a total of 31 songs. We had a lot of fun, they were all excellent tunes.
Next year Pineyfest will be back into gear and we'll do it again.
Yes, Heather is really blossoming. She records the master vocals at her place and emails the tracks to me. Quite a talented lady.

Thanks Mike, I want to make it next year. I would like to bring my family this time and try to make a vacation out of it, scooting on over to the Mississippi River after our Nashville stay and trying to channel Mark Twain's world- I've been fascinated by the Mississippi river in the mid 1800's and hope some of that spirit is still there.

Fantastic song all the way around.
>> newly written song that captures that oldie sound/feel. Yes it does.... Sounds like Patsy Cline!
Looks like from Sub's post that he and Heather had input on this? I'd sure like to see the musical credits at soundclick.
Peace,
Ian

Hi Mike, I appreciate you checking this out as value your input given your long and strong musical background. I know we both share a mutual love of the classics but didn't know if "oldies" fell into that category as well. "Perfect" is very benevolent. Best, Lynn

Hi Ian, Nice to meet you! You may be correct in that I should post more of the credits over on Soundclick. Here's alittle of the run down in case you wanted to know. Thanks for your visit. Demo - Mike Dunbar and a fine group of musicians who come together at the Demo Derby in Nashville. Vocals - Heather Cowles Melody/Lyrics - Lynn Orloff Best, Lynn P.S. Ian I wanted to tell you that I had listened to your song "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party" and I liked it. I felt w/the right vocalist and demo it had much potential. Granted it it is truly a sad song, but you want it to evoke feelings and you can't help but feel sorry for the guy. I love how the verse words flowed immediately into the chorus. I think the right artist/band would really make it shine.

Hi Dan, Nice to meet you! I am so glad you enjoyed this. That's what it's all about. Mike is fine tuning another demo from the derby for me but I wouldn't call it oldielike, but if you are asking for more in terms of that 50ish feel, I do have another one that I hope someday to demo that fits that bill so stick around. Thanks Dan Best, Lynn

Lynn:
I'm glad this song got bumped back up because I listened to it last week at work and forgot to leave a comment that night when I got home.
I loved it!
The lyrics, music and production are all outstanding. Oh, the vocals are superb. I had a free trial of satellite radio when I bought my car and there's a 50s station. I swear this sounds like one of those gorgeous 50s songs I couldn't quite place that they played on that station. There's got to be a place for this in movies or TV.
Great song, Lynn!

Hi Lynn,
I saw Ian asking about the credits, so I thought I'd chime in.
That's Fred Satterfield on drums. Fred played for years with the Oak Ridge Boys, he does a lot of recording with Scotty Moore, Elvis' original guitar player. Willie Rainsford is on piano. Willie played on all the major Alabama hits, he's also recorded with Cheap Trick. John Heinrich is playing Tenor sax on this, though at Demo Derby he also plays soprano and alto, as well as clarinet, flute, and pedal steel. Johnny played sax in Hank Jr.'s band and has recorded with T.G. Shjeppard. Mike Baker is on guitar, Mike plays on the Grand Ole Opry almost every week with Jim Ed Brown. And, of course, Heather on vocals. If folks here don't know Heather Cowles, just do a search here and be ready to spend a few days listening to some great stuff.
Glad folks like this. I'm partial to the fifties, I was born on 10/05/50.
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music
