AES: Audio Engineering Society. I like this show more than NAMM because it's less hype and more substance (no bimbo-types showing off hot guitars, etc).
Anyone happen to be going? It's at the Moscone Center. I go when it's closer in Anaheim.
Anyways, I'll be scouring the 'net for news about cool new audio geek toys...for instance, the rumblings about Protools version 8, and aesthetic sound-absorbing panels for your studio from Auralex.
Check 'em out at www.auralex.com - they're called SonicPrint. I have a feeling that Auralex is going to make a bloody fortune with these because they will work just as well in someone's living room with the Home Theatre System as in a pro or semi-pro studio.
Also, if you are into cool virtual instruments, the coolest one of the year has to be Omnisphere - it debuted at Guitar Center Hollywood Sept 15. Check out www.spectrasonics.net
I missed it this year... I hit it in Manhattan last fall, and flew out to SF for it the year before. Definitely a wild time-- the lectures and convention floor were cool, but it's the after-hours studio tours and Gearslutz dinners that make it worth the flight.
This year just didn't seem like a good time to spend the dough...
