Waal, after my "Little Run-In" with the Tampa PD...(Stop-Sign Dispute)..I figured I'd go watch a Movie about a Bad Cop & hope he gets-his....
LAKEVIEW TERRACE, starring Samuel L.Jackson, delivers a LOT of Bad Cop Action, as hoped-for. Portraying officer Abel Turner, he's a lot more SYMPATHETIC a Baddie than-Expected..though!
He's Dangerous because he's a Single Parent (wife's been killed in a car crash) with 2 kids to raise (Includin' a Hip-Hottie of a Daughter who kinda hates all his "Old" Rules in a Modern World). After over 2 decades on the L.A.PD his bosses want him to retire..& NOW these new neighbors move in..much younger, swankier, AND it's a young WHITE Dude married to a nice-lookin' BLACK Wife... AND the White Dude, Chris Mattson (Played Well by Patrick Wilson) flicks "Organic Cigarette" Butts over on Turner's yard rather-regularly..(accidentally, at-first...later-on..ya wonder...)
Lisa Mattson (also Well-Played by Kerry Washington) is the sweet, well-meaning kinda-spoiled Chick with a Rich Father (who lives 400 miles away) who helped the young couple get this ritzy "Starter Home" in an upmarket L.A. Hills community.
Officer Abel Turner's racial rage heats up at the same pace as the local brushfires-in-the-background do. An All-White OR All-Black couple next-door would've been fine with him, but THIS is the Last Straw for a guy trying to hang on to his sanity, his job, & his kids growing up the way he wants them to.
I found Jackson's portrayal of a cop goin'-over-the-edge to be very-sympathetic by the time The Last Reel Rolls. There's a lot of "Good Cop" in even the Bad Ones..is part of the Message here..that and Yeah, Racism STILL lurks on Both Sides of The Fence.
I give it a "7-Outta-10" on the Bo Derek Scale of Viewworthiness..See It 'cuz Jackson's "Oscar-Worthy" for such a fine job on a tough roll.
Produced by Wil Smith's Overback Production Co. Directed by Neil La Bate ("The Wicker Man", "Nurse Betty", Passion"); Perhaps Adapted from a Martin Lawrence Comedy by Writers David Laughery & Howard Karder, LAKEVIEW TERRACE evolves into a Serious "Reality Check" about everyday people we all brush elbows with.
All have problems..& not everyone WANTS to "Get Along" while the problems get sorted-out...just like in Real Life. You'll exit the theater thinking "This just can't happen HERE...(Or Could It?)" The Background Brushfires look real menacing...& it's Quite a Movie, start-to-finish.
I'm STILL peeved at the Tampa PD...but the scene where Jackson's gotta deal with a Shotgun-Totin' Wife-Abuser...waal..I got a bit more Sympathy for ALL cops now. (It ain't ALL Stop Sign tickets they gotta deal with.)
JMO..Keep-or-Sweep it! Big Hugs, Stan

Stan, even though I have no intention of seeing these in theaters (though I may buy the DVDs when they come out and get cheap), I do enjoy your reviews. And (Brian, are you listening?) I read them regularly.

I'm not planning to remove this forun... I think it has potential going forward. = )
I do request that you be careful with your titles Stan so they don't break the forum left bar and make it too wide. Don't go far without a space to break up text... we don't need every single letter crammed in to find the review..

"Money is worst reason to be motivated NOT to do anything. Instead of letting those concerns STOP you, use it to motivate yourself to find an alternate solution that bypasses money. You will soon find that your own resourcefulness is worth far more than a pile of paper money." –Brian Austin Whitney
