Hi Folks,
I'm looking to tap in to the local community here to see what I can see, and I figure the best way to start off is to share some of my experiences and try to get some discussion going.
For about a year now I have been working on some programming at Hendricks County Libraries. It started with an Open Mic at the Plainfield Library. Eventually I was encouraged to start a guitar lessons program, which has just completed it's fourth run at the Plainfield Library. I've also scheduled shows at Avon and Danville, and am currently talking with the Danville team to bring the lessons there.
I have also made regular appearances at the Locals Only open mics, and have made many friends. For those that don't know, Locals Only is arguably the best place for a fresh performer in Indy to get up and experience the stage and get comfortable as a performing artist. The hosts and audiences are generally very open-minded and polite. The cast of regulars is also a great asset to its charm as well as the sound of Tom Waits music in between sets. I've cut my teeth many times on that stage, and it's really been invaluable to my development here in Indy.
I'm not sure if his name has been tossed around on these boards, but Greg makes regular appearances at several open mics around Indy, and has been dutifully taking pictures of artists and handing out free cds of his work. From what I understand his efforts are all voluntary, and I think he is a huge asset to the Indianapolis Open Mic scene. He recently acquired a device to start collecting audio and burning it to cd, which I'm looking forward to taking advantage of the next time I see him.
I've also made good friends with the Rhino's team down in Bloomington. I book shows there with Tim whenever I can, and I've earned several great opportunities through those contacts. Through Rhino's I have been featured on IUTV and been offered the chance to be on a comp with big name bands like Against Me.
One more name to mention is Robin from Segment of Society. She has helped me score several gigs including a performance at a political rally this Saturday that I just booked today!
There's more of course, but I would like to hear anything you have to share as well. Are there any local chapter activities that I can be involved with?
Thanks,
Brandon

Hi Brandon! It's great to see this post! I would like to get some things going here as well. I am in Greenfield and am willing to work to make this a fun and very active part of the JPF and Indiana community. PM me and let's try to get Indy motivated, Thanks, Tony

Here's another Indy fella checking in and willing to work! I've done a few things at Local's only. We play regular gigs at The Bean Cup in Greenwood, Boulevard Place, Center Stage, and a few more, but we do more festivals than anything else

"Defeatist Pessimists and Rose Colored Glasses Optimists are lonely companions, victims even. Both ideologies imply predestined outcomes, and therefore breed inactivity in its victims. Inaction is the only sure way to lose at anything in life. All positive action guarantees at least a fighting chance." -Brian Austin Whitney
