I originally wrote, recorded, and posted this song in 2006. That was relatively early in my recording career and I had very little experience with the ins and outs of recording. That version suffered from some timing flubs for one thing. Now that I have some better equipment and a littlemore experience with the software end, I decided to revisit this song and do it all over again. I used a click track this time and that solved the timing problems (as far as I can tell) and I was able to get better tone and clarity on both my guitar and vocal. This is just a single guitar and vocal part. It's a fun song for me and I hope you enjoy it too. At Soundclick: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=3437181Heartbroken Lonesome Blues © 2006 by Clint Anglin Mama said, “Son, you know it’s true – That gal of yours she’s just bad news; One of these days she’s gonna up and leave you Alone and cryin’ with those heartbroken lonesome blues.” Well you know Mama she sure was right; My baby walked out on me last night And took all I had, even my shoes; All she left me was these heartbroken lonesome blues. She was my woman but I wasn’t her man, That’s something I just couldn’t understand; Lord knows I didn’t have a clue About how bad I could feel with these heartbroken lonesome blues. I gave her my money, I gave her my time, She left after spending my last dime, Now I have nothin’, nothin’ left to lose Except for these mean old heartbroken lonesome blues. I know I should have taken Mama’s advice, And found me a woman that would treat me right, A lover who would stay and always be true, Someone who wouldn’t give me the heartbroken lonesome blues. But now that it’s over and I’ve paid my dues; I’ll go out and find me someone new, Get me a sweet woman, one who loves me too, Who’ll cure me of these heartbroken lonesome blues. Yeah Mama said, “Son, you know it’s true – That gal of yours she’s just bad news; Get you a sweet woman who will love you too And you’ll never have those heartbroken lonesome blues.” -- Clint

Ah yes... the thumb must be feeling much better. As Tom mentioned as well, I love the guitar work. Very nice. Man! She even took your shoes! That's cold. I enjoyed it, and it sounded like you were having fun.

Hi Tom, Thanks again! But I am surprised that you don't see the profound symbolism and mystical poetic beauty of mythological proportions in the lyrics . I think you have to be an afficianado of old time blues to get into those lyrics - and even then I'm not sure how much it would help . I tried to base the feel of the lyrics and music on some of the ragtime blues guitarists like Big Bill Broonzy and Blind Willie Mctell - but I am far, far from being in that league. Clint

Hi Clint,
Your playing continues to amaze me, so fluid and clear. You are so talented. Lyrically, the story is general and universal, one that many can relate to, but it doesn't really say anything new. You need some more colorful lines like, "And took all I had, even my shoes", to paint more pictures. That would make it a lot stronger.

I knew I was gonna like this when I saw the title. I echo the comments sounds like Jimmie Rodgers reincarnated. Did you ever listen to any of his songs? Not many people go back that far, but he was the trailblazer for what is now called country music.

Hi Ricki,
Yeah, the lyrics could probably use some tweaking - but I wasn't trying to say much of anything new; on the contrary, I was pretty much trying to emulate the old country blues players/singers. It's an idiom where you don't want to get too fancy with your words - simple and to the point. But that being said, I may get around to making some lyrical changes on the next round with this one.

When I was growing up in the 50's my parents used to listen to Jimmie Rodgers on the radio. Maybe he influenced me more than I would have thought - I haven't heard him in over 40 years. Clint

You gotta mention something about "shoes" if it's gonna be a blues song. I have timing problems too. I use a metronome that's built into my recording software. at least I can't pick this one up and throw it at the wall. Great pickin', Ben

Clint, I thought I'd already listened and commented on this one but somehow it slipped past me. Sorry for the delay. Nice Blues tune and lyric. The guitar sounds sweet both sonically and the performance. Wish I had the talent to play like that. I guess I'm sort of a jack of all trades, master of none type guy.
Your pal,
Steve

Thanks, Roy! I listened to that one and a few others that are on there. I just have to learn how to yodel . I also read some of his biography - I didn't realize he had died so young, only 35. Clint

Hi Stevie,
Thanks. You play at least as well as me, just a different style - seems to me you have considerable guitar mastery. Thanks for listening!

Yes it is ironic. Jimmie Rodgers died at 35 and Hank Williams at the age of 33. Two of the greatest pioneers in country music dying so young. One can only imagine if they had lived to the ripe old age of 70 or so.

You are correct. He was born September 17, 1923 and died on January 1, 1953 at the age of 29. It is still amazing at the number of songs he wrote in that period of time. I read recently where Time-Life is releasing a series of his songs that have never been released before. Some that were never recorded but he sang on his radio show. They are supposed to start releasing in October I believe. Full story here: http://www.jettwilliams.com/news.htm

Hi Clint: I almost missed this one - it was posted a couple days after I left for vacation. Glad I caught it. I remember the song - it has the exact right vibe to it. It's a real art to pull that off The recording is much improved though - man, the guitar sounds gorgeous! Nice one! Scott

Hey Clint,
Long time, so see !
That's some great playing there mate. The sound is very reminiscent of the early blues recordings. I was going to say that it sounded just a touch "boomy", but after listening a couple of times, it has a natural tone which suits the track. Great playing as always.
cheers, niteshift

Hi Scott,
I've been away myself and am just now getting back on here. Thanks for the kudos. I think I am starting to get the hang of getting a good recorded tone from the guitar.

Very nice song, played and sung well. I hear some Robert Johnson influence there somewhere.
I was wondering how many bars there were to each verse and I counted different numbers in different verses (13 and 14). Doesn't really matter when playing solo I guess. I am used to playing a consistent number of bars in a band situation. I think the old blues guys played whatever suited them in the early days.

Hi Colin,
Yeah, the old bluesmen didn't stick to the form religiously. I think I picked up that habit somewhat from playing a lot of Lightnin' Hopkins and other old timers.
