The PINEAPPLE EXPRESS has done a Lot of Things Right: They had a Delightful Preview here in Tampa last night, with about 20-30 Nice Red T-Shirts given-away (vs The Usual 3-4 by Local Radio Station DJs, for the Average Preview). Bumper Stickers, Headbands, CDs..The Works! Nice Big rented-to-Capacity Theater, Rent-a-Cop & Security Guards. etc, etc. The Crowd was in Good Spirits.
Then..came..The Movie..(Gulp!)
About 2/3 of the way in, the audible Audience Mumbling began. By the end, maybe 3-5 people (out of 300+) broke into "Spontaneous Applause"..probably 'cuz they got stoned BEFORE this "Stoner-cum-Buddy-Flick-Meets Bloodthirsty-Adventure-Flick ever got rolling. (Lucky Them!)
Was Well-Directed by David Gordon Green, this "Raunchier Big Brother to SUPERBAD" stars (& was Co-Written by) Seth Rogers, who plays a loveable, fairly-intelligent Stoner-Schlubb to-perfection. His character, "Dale Denton", is a 25-yr-old Process Server, with a beautiful 18-yr-old still-in-highschool girlfriend, Angie Anderson (well-acted by Amber Heard).
Dale's enthusiasm for Weed leads to a growing friendship with his pusher, well-played by Spiderman 1-2-3's James Franco, as Saul Silver, Weed-Connaisseur-&-Street-Level Distributor. Silver introduces Dale..& us all..to the strain known as "Pineapple Express"...(It is of course, "To Die For"...) ;-)>
Enter Rosie Perez, as Carol..a female Cop-Gone-Bad, who works for Ted Jones (Gary Cole), the well-connected Local Druglord..who's in a war with The Oriental Competition.
Dale Denton's out to serve Ted with a Subpoena...& just happens to be arriving as Ted & Carol are permanently-eliminating One Of The Competitors...(As well as much of the Comedy-Angle here...)
So..The Chase is ON..to eliminate Witness Dale..his Newfound BFF Saul, & Saul's Middleman, "Red" (Danny McBride), who sets a new Survival Record for Gutshot-Buddies in this flick..just you watch~
COULDA been LOTS Funnier...but Rogen & Co-Writer Evan Goldberg stuck in WAY too many Bullets & Flying Bodies before I guess it's a Happy Ending. I'll give it a "6-Outa-10" Rating..(Mighta been even-lower, except my Wife got a Free Headband...)
Alas, this runs Less like a Pot Buzz, & More like a 'Shroom Trip: Lotta Fun Highs, early-on, but felt kinda Poisonous near The End.
JMO (Keep-or-Sweep-it) Big Hugs, Stan

"Money is worst reason to be motivated NOT to do anything. Instead of letting those concerns STOP you, use it to motivate yourself to find an alternate solution that bypasses money. You will soon find that your own resourcefulness is worth far more than a pile of paper money." –Brian Austin Whitney
