Hollywood, once-again, "Mines-The-Past" & comes up with A Winner in "Get Smart", starring Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart/Agent 86, and Anne Hathaway as the more-experienced Agent 99.
Screenwriters Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember brought ya back the Shoe Phone, "Cone of Silence", and an updated CONTROL-vs-KAOS, in an Action-Comedy that won't make EVERYONE happy..but most of us who can just-sorta remember The Original TV Series..WILL, I think, get quite a kick out of it.
A recently-interviewed Mel Brooks (Who, with partner Buck Henry created the 70's TV series) yielded these memorable Quotes: "You couldn't get a better guy than Steve Carell"...and (explaining WHY "Get Smart" STILL resonates with Today's Audience:) "It's the earnest stupidity (of the) CIA. They want to do a good job, but they don't hire enough (multicultural people). They hire too many WASPS and they get too much white-bread thinking. {Wee mention of Waterboarding followed} They don't know right-from-wrong, & that's what makes a satire of these Government Bureaus really funny."
So, we get Desk-Pounder Maxwell Smart, yearning for a Field Agent Assignment (Like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's swaggeringly-successful "Agent 86's") yet Smart's desk-stuck for being WAY too-valuable as an Intelligence Interpreter, by his boss, Alan Arkin, The Chief.
KAOS, however, gets its villainous hands on enough Nuclear Material to get in an Extortion-Terror Mode..bombs CONTROL's HQ, and the need to have MORE Field Agents gets Max Smart paired up with Anne Hathaway's world-savvy Agent 99..& off to Russia, with Love Waiting in the Wings..as we get treated to the Action Drama part of the Movie: Buildings blowing up/Major Fireballs, Unexpected Parachute-less Falls, & back to the USA for a major Airplane-Car-Train Chase before Max ends up, bare-backsided..in time to Save The World at the Disney Center.
Plenty of Action, Fair Share of Laughs, too...&..a Star-Studded Cast: James Cahn as (vaguely-similar-to-"W") The President, Bill Murray as "Agent 13" encased in a Patomic Pine(?)Tree, Masi Oka (Fresh from the "Heros" Set) as Bruce, a CONTROL Nerd/Weapons Expert. I personally enjoyed Dalip Singh's portrayal as Dalip... (You've perhaps seen him as WWF's "Great Khali" on TV.) He's come a long way from a field laborer & police constable in his native India~ & all sorts of James-Bondian Special-Weaponry that Carell uses to Comedic Advantage. The Music's delightful, & the Theme Song WILL take you back to the Good Ol' Days, when "Would You Believe.." was the funniest Catch Phrase Going~
Would you believe this is a "7 1/2-Outta-10"..(and maybe even Better)..if you enjoy it as it IS...& not for What it Oughta Be?
PG-13.."Rude Humor, action violence & language". (Carell & "The Rock" got an on-screen smooch scene, too...) You were warned! ;-)>
JMO...K-O-Sweepit.
Big Hugs, Stan

Thanks, Stan. I'd seen reviews saying this was a good movie, but I was waiting to see what you thought about it. I guess I don't mind the mining of my childhood as long as they do a good job of it, and I got the sense they did a good job of it here.
I think I'll still wait for it to come out on video. I feel about the price of movie tickets like I feel about the price of gas--I don't wanna go there.
Thanks. I really enjoy your reviews.
Joe

Thanks for the Feedback, Bro Joe!
Steve Carell's taking some Heat for doing HIS kinda scthick on the Max Lines...(He's not as Out-Of-It as the Original Character was...)..& there's a mini-brouhaha that there seem to be LOTS of Little Laughs between All The Action, & not as many HUGE Guffaws as-expected (by those particular critics).
I think both Scriptwriters AND Actors had to bend things a BIG Bit for Max to be "Love-worthy" by the Last Reel...&..it works..Miracle-of-Miracles! Major "Hats-Off" to Hathaway for not "dumbing-down" to be more Carell-Worthy here. She comes off as a Very-Intelligent, Quite-Athletic, VERY Hot Agent 99, & Max comes off as rather-brilliant, & deserving of hero-accolades AND The Gal...AFTER some typically-hillarious Mis-Fires, of course!
It's one I STILL feel Good-About 3 days After I've seen it..& not TOO many "7 1/2"-ers DO I feel Good About, even 1 day after.
So...when ya DO see this Baby, tell me whether I shoulda given it an "8"..eh?
Best Wishes & a Big Guy-Hug, Ol' Headscratchin' Stan

Hi Bri~!
It's hard to get OVERLY-Excitable on a "Remake."
I DID see "WALL-E" over the weekend...& that Baby's a "9" I'm fairly-certain. JMO, of course, as ALL these Reviews are.
BUT Pixar/Disney DID try "Something New"..and it Scored BIG with this guy. (&..I shelled out for it AFTER I'd paid for "WANTED" & hadda drive La Femme HOME from the Theater, 'cuz she doesn't LIKE Animated Flicks.)
"Wanted" felt like an Update on "The Matrix"...& Jolie's Behind wasn't worth the Outlay, (tho Overall the Pic IS Very Entertaining..tho the Plotline's got Holes in it ya can drive an 18-Wheeler through.)
Again, JMO...& I'm too time-crunched today to do Mah Duty on the Reviews..but WILL get to 'em...ASAP!

I LOVED this movie!!! I laughed throughout the whole flick - Steve Carell was fantastic - I had read a couple of not so great reviews from newspapers - but I still wanted to see it and my 7 year old wouldn't let me rest til we did. My hubby and I were really pleased with it - complete brain candy - and my 7 year old no longer wants to be a scientist - wants to be a secret agent. LOL! Definitely an 8 - easily!! Thanks for your reviews Stan!! Big hugs to you too, Cher

HIDee Mz Cher, & Thanks for Your Input! I liked Steve (My wife didn't) & I thought Ann Hathaway was both Gorgeous & Very Good in a Tough Roll to pull off. And it's always Great to see a couple Former Wrestlers make it Big in Hollywood, too!
Hey, I've gotten to know a few Spies over the years...(The Army kept tryin' to get me into the ASA..I hadda hitchhike to The Pentagon to get my orders changed from Ft. Hollabird [where they train 'em] to get to Europe..to get away from that Scene.) Always wondered how different life woulda been IF I'd taken that apres-'Nam Assignment there... Most of the Agents I knew were both Fun...& a Wee Bit Wild..(They sorta make their Own Rules...heh!) But..it's demanding work/requires a Very Intelligent Person..& I'm sure the Pay is Good...(Rumpor has it that every Agent's Personnel File has a "Sellout Price", where some Higher-Up's determined How Much Loot it'd take for an agent to "Sell-Out"... Get in Financial Trouble..& they pull your Security Clearance.)
One of my Electric Fan Collectin' Buddies is in charge of makin' sure the little piece of Fibre-Optic Filament's UN-compromised in those Domes the Embassies have Secure Conversations in. The F-O piece connects the Dome to the Phone line-out.. NOT a very big piece, but HAS to be UN-Compromised. He was one of 3 bidders on a Fan that auctioned-off for $16.5 K...(the Florida Record)..so I'm pretty SURE the Pay IS Good, as an Agent!
Thanks for Your Kind Visit...& let's Bump This Movie up to an "8"..it WAS a Lotta FUN!
Big Hugs to You & Your Little Agent-in-the-Making! Stan
