I am not a story writer and I know that this thread is meant for our own stories. I am currently writing a song about Edgar Watson, an outlaw who moved from Oklahoma to the Florida Everglades and built a sugar cane plantation in the late 1800's.
It was thought that he murdered several of his hired hands who demanded pay for their work. He was shot and executed by 20 vigilantes in 1910.
In my research of the story, I came across this American Heritage article written by an 80 something year old woman about growing up in the Florida wilderness. Since I can identify with all of her descriptions, I thoroughly enjoyed her depiction of the times. The area where her family and Watson's plantation were are still intact because they are part of Everglades National Forest and cannot be developed.
I hope you take the time to read this story and enjoy it as much as I did. Ben
