YEEEHAW!..Today I got a 10 page song contract from 1000tracks.com-which is a hollywood music licensing service.........they license music to film/tv/basically anyway any commercial use can be made of a song.........of course I am hoping for the most frequent and widespread use of the songs.....but there aint such a thing as bad money-lol...................especially after three years of no money in nashville.........its just catalog placement and pitching but i think the songs have great potential for use by the clients they service.....that will really help the songs take off and i can still pitch em to artists and labels as well.......so of course i am one real happy camper!......thanks again to all the fabulous people involved in those songs....my co-writer ADLAI WAXMAN.....my producer MIKE DUNBAR.......my male lead singer TIM BUPPERT...and little ms gorgeous herself VICKIE CARRICO who did the female lead song..."INTO THAT MONTANA SUN"/"GOODBYE LITTLE MISS 911 and CANT FIND LOVE ON THE DIAL are now out there big time...........y'all did a great job-thanks again! and best of luck to everyone in JPF IN their songwriting and pitching.......all you folks were alot of help to me and i truly appreciate it.......look forward to hearing your good news real soon!

Tom, Congrats, i know how You feel. Michael Borges here has a list of these library publishers and does quite well licensing his work through them(he'll be glad to help)...can't remember where he has it posted, hold on...it's a big iceberg you just jumped up on...very glad for you...moker

Thanks buddy.....yes i will shoot MICHAEL a copy of their song contract..his experience with those will be highly valued........i trust him more than any lawyer in nashville...............those guys are well known for milking both ends of the cow at the same time......one actually advertised that he was a former member of the tennessee legislature.....i dont think folks here consider that a good reccomendation-lol-i sure dont.....cant wait till you you get to nashville and start blowing some of these kids right off the stage.......your doublewide awaits you and the mrs.......hope she is feelin better.....VANDERBILT is one of the best medical centers in the world and she will be well taken care of by those folks.........have a great summer........now that i finally got some jello nailed to the wall i hope to get back to the lyric and mp3 boards and see what yall been up to while i have been busy....

Congratulations Tom. I have never worked with Mike or Vickie, but I have with Tim many times, and he is excellent. If this licensing service is like most you will retain 100% of the writers share and rights, but you will be asked to sign the publishing to them, but that is to be expected. If this is not the case I would be surprised. Best of continued success to you, and I hope to hear you in the movies.

they act as the publisher....and TIM is indeed one of the best and most in demand demo singers in nashville.....he is so busy a gal in california who wanted him for her demo went thru me on my myspace page trying to contact him......i passed on the message and happily ever after-he contacted her etc etc......BUT as i told him-he now owes me roses on secretarys day!.....lol.thanks for your congrats

yes its a great biz alright.....beats the real world by a country mile.........sometimes anyway.......days like this make up for the ones where some publisher rep kills your song at 30 seconds in a room full of people at BMI in nashville....and you slink out of the room to have a cigarette and when you open the book of matches theres an invitation to become an artist if you can draw the lumberjack-but you dont have enough hand and eye coordination to do that.....so....you keep pitching the song cause you cant draw the lumberjack......makes sense to me-but then i am crazy................so are you stan and your music is better for it.......keep at it my man stan!

Ditto what they all said!!....If anyone getting into the music business were to ask my advice, then after a swift blow to the head, I'd tell them to forget about the Big One and get acquainted with film placement libraries if they are serious about a career that would allow for steady cash while still pursuing what you love.....But it's a long road...Congrats on taking that first step!

This is basically getting your music on the cheap.

Have you ever listened to the sound tracks of those cheap budget films like " Cannonball Run" those song are trash songs any one could write them .

It's anothe way of ripping of writers you will never see any royalty's, from your work just read the small print, in the contracts

Several failed writers are setting up this type of thing and they are the only ones who get paid.

Forget the fancy names they are all failed writers,and scum, of the earth who are ripping off naive writers.

Its a SCAM.

Sorry to let you down off of a high, but you will be sorry if
waste time and money you will never recuperate the cost of your demo or demo's

They are nocking you off the first rungs of the ladder.

i really mean it......i am gonna have the contract reviewed by a uncle of my co writer and michael borgess of JPF......both of them are very sharp guys-definitely not on the side of some scam artist.....i didnt blindly sign and neither did my co-writer.......the contract will be looked over inch by inch and if its not a good one I ASSURE YOU that nobody will yell scam louder than me-cause i hate ripoffs of any type.......thanks for your sincere concern.....we writers have to look out for each other and i always alert other writers outside town to any nashville scams i know about.....

i go to songwriter workshops at BMI alot (the free ones-not the paid ones) and the instructor-JASON BLUME-has repeatedly told us that the placement libraries are much more practical goals for us little people.......cause the top singers are co writing with the top producers and its pretty much impossible to break into that closed loop kinda deal.......on the other hand the film and tv folks dont wanna have to deal with sony or garth brooks just to fill some track space..........we little people are cheaper and easier to deal with...i live 4 blocks from music row and i am now myself focusing on music licensing services...yes when i demo something i do maybe 5 publishers and the cattle calls at BMI by guest publisher reps..but i aint doing this for the typing practice so yes i eventually want to make money and not just spend time and money....i dont care if my music ends up in a fruit of the loom commercial for underwear........anyone is welcome to try the placement and licensing services........your music is just as good as mine........

i dont know that i have any special wisdom....the only thing i have done right is to keep at it.....despite the odds......cause as you all know its kind of a compulsion that grabs ya and wont let go....u can be successful in this that and whatever in other efforts in life...........but if you dont get a song or two picked up well that will always bug you......obviously it became a insane obsession with me....i came to nashville at age 52 with absolutely no connections......thats really nuts and i dont reccomend it to anyone but i am just one of those people who likes to skate in wind tunnels i guess.......so just keep at it......

HI AGAIN SPLIT

i sent a copy of the contract to another one of my co-writers-composer tony finno of nyc........that guy has signed more music contracts than anyone else i know......he has a masters degree from the berklee school of music and has worked with alot of big people in the biz-done it all in every genre etc etc........he said its something he would sign for our co-writes.........and that guy aint no new peach on the tree....i also shot a copy to michael borges-who is very experienced in music contracts......he will look it over.....my co-writer on the songs did some homework on the guy who started the company...he has a good rep......again-i very much appreciate your input and concern that i not get screwed....that was nice of you......but i am getting this contract looked at from a variety of people alot more experienced with music contracts than me.........and so far they would all sign it......i will keep the board updated.......its great that we all look out for each other as writers......i wish you the best in your submissions and music projects....

Nice one Tom, you are obviously a sensible , guy and I wish you lots of luck. But you must take (You and your co writer) 50 per cent writers royalty, (50 per cent to the Publisher)

Just beware of one other thing, if they come back to you and say you need to re record the song or songs to get them to Screen quality, needed for the sound track do not do this out of your own pocket.

There is usually 300,000 dollars put to one side as a minimum for studio time, by the film company, and if you are not getting some of that finance , there is something wrong.

300,000 dollars would be a minumum for a low budget film.

High Budget films do not work this way at all.

They sign a Pro Composer to write the Sound Tracks
and they get mega bucks.

well folks,

as i said,one of my co writers who has signed alot of contracts in his time looked at the contract offered me by 1000tracks.com.........he said he would sign it for our co writes and so i sent those off for submission........features i like about the contract myself are that its non exclusive and can be cancelled at any time.........so that doesnt sound like a screw job to me.....the guy who started the company is a former writer himself......i myself am glad to have an alternative to the monopoly of music row......and in the digital online world we live in this is just the best way to go......fast and competitive....you dont have to raise your hand and wait for attention and permission from sony or whoever........and this company shops your stuff for use anyway it can be used......cool with me.....i am a fellow writer and want us all to do well.........i will email a copy of the contract to anyone who wants one so they can check it out.......its their blank standard contract-the same one they offer everyone.....nobody gets a different deal........and u sure cant say that about music row..........so i look forward to sharing whatever info i can to help my fellow writers......

So glad you have been able to place those songs. Seems to me that any exposure that protects you contractually and allows you to continue to use and promote your own material is a plus. Better out there circulating that way than sitting in the bottom of a box in your closet, IMO. If it goes big, and your name is attached to it, it just might open the way for people to look at some of your other material as well.

Life--and the music world--seems a most peculir game of chance. The Good Book notes that the race doesn't always go to the swiftest runner, or the victory to the strongest warrior--because time and chance overtake us all. Glad your hard work met an opportunity. Hope it does so again often in the future.

you are right-any exposure and use is good......there are what they call "pluggers" in nashville charging like $1000 a month to get songs heard in the industry........but even if u are so wealthy and well umm stupid enough to do that-its no guarantee songs will be picked up.....you just never know-thats why u keep trying........at least thats my attitude...i dont see myself as having made it at all-this is just catalog placement-but thats a start.....i am now in the room so to speak....on the shelf of an online walmart.......thats how i see it...........thanks again and best of luck to you in your music as well..........

some of the scams being run in this town are unreal.......SOME of the pluggers do have better than average access and connections......however they cant sell bad songs.......the local paper has interviews with them and they say that in a 10 song presentation the gallows drops just as quickly-if not quicker and the plugger gets reamed out for bringing crap...so fancy gift wrap only works if the product you are selling is a PET ROCK

yes i HAVE to approach this intelligently and make good decisions cause to be honest i aint got any STUPID MONEY to be thrown around on scams or stuff that just plain doesnt work........in my time in nashville i have seen folks plucked like chickens and thrown into the frying pan by some really cold but smooth scamsters...believe me they can see you coming and they are even more into the game sometimes than the money.....it hurts their pride when you walk away with your money and dreams intact......as elsewhere-most folks in nashville are honest sincere folks who want to be helpful and make money thru hit songs...but yes there are the con artists and i have seen some good folks just taken for a ride.......i aint too proud to ask alot of questions and get 5 different opinions on something.....i dont worry about looking dumb at the time-i wanna make sure i dont FEEL DUMB later on-lol......thanks again and best of luck to you in your music career as well......

Congratulations, Do you have to pay these people to pitch your songs or do they get paid from the person who wants to use the song. Just trying to understand how it works without getting into all the details of a contract. I have heard that music licensing service's have to approve your songs but isn't there some kind of sign up fee. Answer if you like. thanks

there was a $5 listing fee per song

but no its not just a scam to get somebodys 5 bucks..thats a standard listing fee in the biz........i wouldnt get sucked into paying pitching fees........i wont do that in nashville so i sure wont send money to sunny california......this is a professional songwriter biz-they either like your stuff and take it or they say no.......the listing fee is fair when you realize that food vendors gotta pay a shelf fee to supermarkets to get their product in the store...its not whats called a vanity press operation where every submission is wonderful and they will print all the copies you can afford to pay for......they got their 5 buck listing fee and thats all they are getting from me......its non exclusive-i can still pitch these songs to music row-alan jackson-whoever.....and you can cancel anytime.......so none of those things are what a scam artist would do......its legit...i have had the contract checked and double checked by people in the biz........so check out their website-send em some songs whatever.........best of luck to you...........hope i answered your questions and concerns.........

And the contract and invitation to send more was attached! Thanks again, if it hadn't been for you sharing your success, I would never have known about the 1000tracks website. Now I can submit the rest of the songs from my EP and send the contract in (after carefully reading and signing of course).

I wonder if they inform you about placement in specific shows?
