It's Only Human to laugh at Our Humanity. Human Weaknesses have provided us with laughs as far-back as Addlepated Jerry Lewis-meets-"Normal" Dean Martin..& beyond..probably back to the cave man days when Ook dropped his club on his big toe.
In "BABY MAMA", written/directed by Michael McCullers, we're asked to laugh at the foibles of an Approaching-40-dom Successful-at-Business (But Not-at-Romance) Gal with a defective Reproductive System..who's gotta hire a lower-class Surrogate.
And laugh at lines like "I don't like your uterus"..(Says the Doctor at the Fertility Clinic.)
So, prepare yourself for a few Stretch Marks on your Funnybone. What "saves" this fairly-predictable farce are the Actors-Employed. (McCullem does have 20 SNL Episodes. the Austin Powers Flicks, and several other Comedic Screenplays to his credit.) He's chosen his actors here Very Well, indeed, & ALL (Pardon the Pun) De-liver!
Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, & a Fun Cameo by Steve Martin. (With a very tongue-in-cheek bit by Sigorney Weaver.) Greg Kinear (as Rob) and Dax Shepard (as Carl) provide love-interest for the 2 gals-involved..& add a touch of reality to the laughs.
Tina's character, Kate Holbrook, is Steve Martin's Ultra-Holistic Barry's "Second-in-Command", & is newly-promoted & entrusted with finding a new NYC location for the Large Health Food Chain's "Centerpiece" Store. Kate's been so-busy rising to this trusted-position, she's ignored her "Biological Clock", & now finds "Adoption" far from Fast-Arriving, so she's down to her Final Option: Spending $100K at Sigorney Weaver's "Chaffee Buckwell {Surrogate Mom-Finding} Institute".
Kate bends over backwards to convince Angie Ostrowiski (Amy Poehler) that Angie should choose her from several other "suitors" for the Mom "Honors"...&...after being-chosen, has to continue accommodating Angie when she breaks up from Boyfriend Carl & needs a roof over her head.
So the gals become high-rise roommates..& there are some fun moments as Upperclass Lady kowtows to Lowerclass Surrogate Mom, who sticks gum under Kate's pricey Coffee Table...(& wants a smoke & a Red Bull)...etc. You'll also get a few chuckles out of Siobhan Fallon's portrayal of a birthing class teacher who talks a lot like Barbara Walters.
What also "saves" this Comedy is the rather seriously-twisted ending..which IS some excellent Screenwriting, IMO. New Face to Watch For: Felicity Stiverson (Who plays a Wiccan Surrogate Mom for a highly-Christian Couple.)
LOTS of Memorable Vignettes in this "6 1/2-Outta-10" Movie..yet the Desperation these "Wannabe-Moms" have in Real-Life is still so-tragic it's hard to laugh, sometimes.
JMO...Keep-or-Sweepit!
Big Hugs, Stan

I think I will wait for it to come on Cable... I bet it would have been WAY better if Tina Fey had written it...

Hi Again, Big Bro Bri!
Yeah...you might be right...BUT..it took a fair share of Courage to tackle this Subject Matter..so I'll give Michael McCullers his props!
I also owe some to "Up-&-Comer" Actor Romany Malco, whom I really shoulda Included-Above, but was running a bit long..& outta Segues.. ;-)> Malco..as Oscar, the Doorman..is one of Our Own: A former #1-Charted Rap MUSICIAN (College Boyz/Virgin Records), who was Music Producer on a Flick, then got talked into Acting...got the Lead in VH1's "Too Legit: The MC Hammer Story" 2001 TV Movie..& On to Parts in several Major Movies, among them "40 Year Old Virgin". He's a very-sympathetic Character in this Movie..& he's another Actor you'll be seeing lots-more-of in the Years Ahead!
Shoulda given Amy Poehler HIGH Praise for her portrayal of a Workin'-Class-Gal..doin' the Best-She-Could, Under rather Rough-Circumstances. She's as-Sympathetic as she's Hilarious!
My Guess Is that BOTH Gals ad-libbed a Lot of Fun into this one's Plotline...(& it's rare to see Steve Martin UNDER-playing His Part..but he's VERY-Subtle here..& "A Stitch", as a Result!)
Better add it's "PG-13"...nothin' scandalously-sexy..just more "Grown-Up" than the Usual Comedic Subject Matter.
Best Wishes & Thanks for all your Kind Visits Here, Amigo!
Big Guy-Hug, Stan
