What little studio equipment thing bothers you the most! Not people lol...

Also not talking about computers or sofware in general they generally make me sick to my stomach on a regualr basis smile

Here are two small ones that kill me...

1- Headphone jacks ends - WHY in the world do they insist on using those mini plug ends on any STUDIO headphones. Like I'm gonn walk around with those and ride the bus plugged into a walkman.
ALL studio phones should be like they used to be 1/4 inck jacks just like ALL professional euipment.

I can't count the times i had to tape the stupid adaptor they give you up, people always complaining about the phones dropping out in one ear or whatever,
VERY STUPID!

2- The other thing that gets me is the TOP of Mic stands WHY!!! in the world do they keep making stands with those extra thin threads at the top.
Then you get those little adaptors for that too. EVERYTIME you unscrew a Mic Clip
it gets stuck inside the clip.. You have to get a screw driver and unscrew it on an angle stripping it all the time.

They DON"T make Mic Clips that have small holes, they are all the same sive BIG like they have been for 60 years! STOP making those stands they make NO sense whatsoever, OR make a mic clip that fits them at least. Bad!!!

smile

Thanks!
Peace Mike

HA! Y'know, I didn't realize how much that headphone thing irritated me until you said it. I think I'd actually pay MORE to not need that adapter... they could call it the "Pro" option, or "featuring our new Magnum phone plug." Make it seem novel, right?

Besides, those adapters are another one of those little things that tend to "walk" after a session. I've started to buy them six at a time at RadShack...

my lack of ability as an engineer and my lack of knowledge and the equipment it takes to make things better myself. i have found myself in a business downturn, like alot of America right now, but it has my demo budget stifled and great songs stacking up that i simply can't make good enough demos of to pitch the songs. i'll get to them eventually, but it's that lack of confidence and ability as an engineer that is holding me back right now. sounds like the old dog needs to learn some new tricks...but yeah, i hate those clip threads and adapters too...ha...

Headphones in general bother me. I hate singing with them on. I can never hear my voice properly. I hate having to remove them from one ear to hear my natural voice. My old Sennheisers had a screw on adapter that did not come off but I am with you on the small stereo jacks. My ears also hurt after a sweaty session with them encased in foam.
Mic stand adapters do not really bug me as much as the little screw wheels or finger nuts on boom arms that do not tighten up properly or are so tight you cannot unscrew them to adjust the heights and angles of the boom.

Your is a good place, If you spent time on the recording end you WILL lose the songwriting edge. It is a big distraction. The only way to do both at any high percentage and accomplish anything is to have NO life - Zero!!! And even then everything needs more time & work.

That's me! I mean No life, nothing!

Keep doing what your doing! smile

Hi Jim

I know what you mean about headphones, I'm so used to them now from recording for soooo long 25 years already, I don't even think about them. Accept for when they start screwing up and that usually starts with those stupid mini plug ends smile lol....

The mic clips never bothered me live because we never took them off the mic stands, but in the studio I always have to change mic's and mic clips so they are always getting stuck inside the mic clip. No more small threads, it's like the metric system or something. It don't fly! smile

Here's some good advice...no charge. Go to Radio Shack and get you a few nice, solid all metal 1/4" plugs. Go home and pour a nice glass of something you like, put on a CD you love, and then sit down and solder them buggers onto your headphone cords. It will take you less time than it did typing your rant whistle

Tracking down the buzz and hum gremlins....I don't run into them as much any more since I've started using balanced lines (when possible), but trying to find the wall wart or bad cable that causes the hum/buzz and moving it; or making sure your a/c wires cross at close to 90 degree angles to audio wires...quite a pain...

At least I had the good sense to get dedicated circuits run from my studio to my house mains box so I don't get interference from the refrigerator or when the air conditioner kicks in...

Hi Larry

I forget all about those I just accept and live with them at this piont lol... smile

Another thing I hate is looking around and seeing all I need. Once U start looking at cables I think about replacing all of them lol... That would be about $2,500

So how do you like that "gated hum noises sound I'm going for"? Big LOL smile

Mike, those AKG's you're wearing in your photo over there; don't they have a screw on adaptor? Mine do...

Because I record at home, and share the space with my wife (as her office and computer workspace)I'm always settng-up and tearing-down my gear. Mostly, it's a mic. stand or two, and running cables, not such a huge deal, but when I get hit with the vibe to go record a song I know there's a half hour of cabling to be done first...kinda kills it for me sometimes.

As for mic. clips, I hate having to buy those extra adaptors for AKG (and other Euro mics)to fit a regular mic. stand, oh, and the clip that came with my Beta 57, only the bottom inch actually fits in the clip.

Replace those plastic knobbed locking screws with all metal thumb or wing screws.

Hi,

We live in a time when recording at the same quality as the Beatles did is available to virtually everybody. I am challenged to rant about headphone jacks or mic stands in the face of overwhelming gratitude for my small but wonderful recording system. It is true that when we focus on what we lack, our lack is increased-when we are grateful, even more wonderful things are attracted to us.

My headphones all have quarter inch jacks. Hmmmm i wonder why.

But
The rubber O rings they use on the shock mounts on my Mic's are constantly breaking. Any ideas on how to solve that one?

Hi -yes they do and that's the problem for many many many years they didn't and the headphones worked fine. Now everytime there's a drop out on one side 90% of the time it's that adapter.

If something works leave it alone smile No need for walkman headphone mini ends on
STUDIO headphones at $150 - $200 a pair.

Make it the other way around - Leave 1/4" jacks alone and gives adaptors if we wanna turn them into whimpy mini plugs for I Pods
smile

Thanks!

I thought I'd 'spoil' myself with some expensive Quickloc mic stands...a year later and none of the tightening screws hold anymore. Always drooping down...I need some mic stand viagra!!! To date the best mic stands I've used are the Apex (made in China) variety.

Bill, are those shock mount rings the type that grip the mic when you turn the plastic-screw-handle-thingy on the bottom of the clip? I had my AKG C3000B fall onto the floor once when it slipped out; somebody insisted they could only sing into an inverted condenser mic (GEESH!)Maybe check out a plumbing supply store for some silicone rings in the same size, they're designed to stay tight, but they will deform because they don't really like being taken out many times...you might have to leave the mic in the mount?
