Looking So Far Back At Thirty
© 2008 lyrics Kevin Pearson

v1
If you remember black and white TV
Milk man delivered to your door
filling station pumped gas for free
Then we've both been here before

v2
Howdy Doody and Captain Kangaroo
grabbed a place in our hearts
The Beatles were brand new
and we loved them from the start

Childhood days from our past
Baby boomers growing up so fast

chorus
How did we ever get to be
Looking so far back at thirty……
Back then that passed for old
Oh my how the years have rolled
Never knew we would get to be
Looking so far back at thirty……

v3
Went to war and marched for peace
watched the eagle land on the moon
Kids swear that’s ancient history
But its just time that passed too soon

chorus
How did we ever get to be
Looking so far back at thirty……
Back then that passed for old
Oh my how the years have rolled
Never knew we would get to be
Looking so far back at thirty……

bridge
We've grown older but not up
The glass is still half full of luck
We've grown older but not up

chorus
How did we ever get to be
Looking so far back at thirty……
Back then that passed for old
Oh my how the years have rolled
Never knew we would get to be
Looking so far back at thirty……

Kevin this is a really GREAT piece of writing.

My ONLY nit is the way the "get to be" reads with the "thirty".
Have you thought about trying to make it more of a rhyme there....doesn't have to be cheesy or a perfect rhyme but just maybe something that makes it flow more smoothly.

I dunno...maybe something along the lines of:

AND NOW IT FEELS LIKE IT'S TOO EARLY
TO BE LOOKING SO FAR BACK AT THIRTY

JUST a suggestion and only my opinion. Even if you leave it alone, it's a wonderful piece! Great job.

Thanks for sharing.

Cindy,

Thanks for taking the time to read and respond even though I think you don't remember black and white televisions. That makes it even better that you can still relate to this.

Kevin,

Well, is that what it felt like to be thirty? I can't remember! ha ha

Anyway, it's all stuff I remember, but would like to see more of it in v1. You offer a lot of examples however. To me, the bridge sounds a bit like he's saying "that's all folks..." (I've seen my better days") There's lots more days to come... grin

Good luck w/it!

Kristi

Oh my gosh, the milkman! There ya go….that silver metal rectangle thing with sharp corners sitting outside the porch door….I see it! smile

Like your changes, Kevin. Hope to hear it soon!

Kevin, I'm not seeing how your examples relate to your hook. None of them are from when you were thirty. If they are, you'd be about 70-80 now and not likely to be putting out records, lol. It's well written, and I know what you're trying to say, but it may need a little rethinking. JMO. Good luck with it.

Kevin, I like your song, LOVE the premise, and I happen to like the "get to be" and "thirty" pseudo-rhyme (because I am the self-proclaimed princess of pseudo-rhyme lol).

But I have to say I am with Bill Osofsky on this one...I am thirty four and have never had a "milkman", nor have I ever seen an episode of howdy doody, although my almost sixty dad tells me milky the clown was something to see! LOL.

(I cannot tell you how often he tells me about twin pines milk...some jingle that haunts him or something I guess I should pay beter attention! lol! I digress...)

I am not trying to be smarty pants! I just think your examples work better from an older perspective.

Maybe you could chang it to fifty instead of thirty?

But again, I REALLY like this song and the potential of it!!

All the best,

-Jamie

Kristi,

Thanks again and for coming back to check on it.

Bill and Jamie

I guess I haven't done my job well enough since there is some confusion here. Although he does say "I remember when 30 was old" he is talking about his childhood and early adult years
and now looking back even the age of 30 which as a child seemed old is a long way back in the rear view mirror. Which puts his age in the 50's to 60's. I hope that makes more sense but obviously it must not be crystal clear if you have confusion.
I'll take another look and see if I can make some changes. Thanks for your comments. I appreciate your input.

Oh! Okay! I get it now! Like you are looking back at being thirty years old! Yeah, sorry!

Re-reading it, verse three TOTALLY supports that. But the references in verses one and two are what confuse, imho.

I guess then what you could do is pick some memories of the 80's and mix them in there with your memories of the fifties, like now legwarmers and "big hair" are as distant to you now as howdy doody is.

Does that make sense?

All the best,

Jamie

Hey, Kev, Don't trust Anyone Over 60..eh? ;-)>

Guess that'd include me..heh!

Great Bitta Nostalgia, Very Well-Put, especially liked the "Went to war & marched for peace" line...SO Ironic AND So TRUE! V1 seems So Ironic, too...We HAVE "Come A Long Way, Baby!"

I like your Optimism in da Bridge..(I'd use "still" in place of "way"...but Like Your Choice Better...heh!)

"KUDOS" for a Nice Look Backwards...with Hope Still-Ahead!

Good Luck with this one..Well-Done, Amigo!

Hi Kevin,

I like it, and I'm in the crowd it fits. I remember everything in this, and a lot more. I do remember swearing I'd never live past 50 cause I didn't want to be decrepit. I'm 58 now, and teach aerobics. The mindset sure has changed, at least for me. Good luck with this one.

Jamie,
Thanks again. I do see your point tried to make it a little clearer don't know if I did though. Appreciate your input.

Stan,
Thanks its good to hear from you. At least we are only growing older instead of growing up, right!

John,
Yeah who ever thought. I am pretty sure my dad was a whole lot older when he was my age. Sure seems that way doesn't it.

Thanks to Everyone
Kevin
