As soon as you hear the Jungle-y Drums thumpin' away, you know this is going to be one of those "Mean-Streets Cop Movies"..& fast-drivin' Keanu Reeves plays LAPD Dectective Tom Ludlow with a Vengeance!
Judge, Jury AND Executioner for the Area's Bad Guys, he tells Internal Affairs Captain James Biggs (TV HOUSE's Hugh Laurie), who's been shadowing him, "You don't WANT to take me out..You NEED me here!" Seems true enough..his cheating wife's been murdered, & his former partner's just been murdered..saving HIM the trouble for wanting to bust him up for blabbing to Internal Affairs about previous "Rodney King-ish" encounters..(Reeves DOES swing a Mean Phone Book...as you'll see later!) ;-)>
So, he's now-challenged with clearing his name with his ex-partner's widow, finding the cop-killers, all the while being "shielded" by his newly-promoted overseer, Captain Jack Wander (Forest Whittaker). Captain Jack has a habit of "Looking the Other Way" when Justice gets served/& Detective Ludlow doesn't seem eager to waste time reciting Miranda Rights...ever! LOTSA Gangsta goings-on, with Rap Music provided by Common & The Game, & with a good performance by Cedric The Entertainer as a Shiny-Red Caddie Convertible-drivin' small-time Hood in da Hood who gets squeezed to be a "Snitch", mid-point in the Plotline.
Lots of brutality by police & badguys, (Some of which are Both), plot twists galore, & you won't find this flick boring. I didn't find it as intellectually-stimulating as for instance, "Bank Job" or "21", but it's as fast-paced & crime-laden as the City it's taking place in, and it's fun to see what a Modern-Day John Wayne would look like, "in-action", without the Lawyers around.
Rates a "6 1/2-Outta-10"...leave the Kids at Home (So they can sleep at night), & get a BIG bag of popcorn for the wild ride ahead!
JMO...Keep-or-Sweepit!
Big Hugs, Stan

We used to LOVE John Wayne doin' all these Tough-Guy things to the Baddies...heh...so it's a fun way to gauge how much Lawyers..& Time..have changed "Justice, American Style".
I'm still scratchin' my head to think of WHERE in L.A. they dug up the "Abandoned Hilltop House" that factors into the Plot repeatedly, complete with Abandoned Swimming Pool~
Must be havin' One Heck of a Recession Out There...IF such places actually exist! Heh!
Best Wishes & 'nuther Big Guy-Hug, Stan

"Money is worst reason to be motivated NOT to do anything. Instead of letting those concerns STOP you, use it to motivate yourself to find an alternate solution that bypasses money. You will soon find that your own resourcefulness is worth far more than a pile of paper money." –Brian Austin Whitney
