Set in 1939 London, "MISS PETTIGREW" (Frances Dormand) loses a Governess Job (Again!) & cadges a "Social Secretary" slot for an Expat American Actresss & Singer, Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams). Delysia's busily stringing-along 3 guys at-a-time on her dizzying, ditsy "way-to-the-top."
WILL she choose a Starring, Theatrical Role offered by Phil Goldman (Handsomely-Played by Tom Payne), wealthy Producer's Son & Lady's Man. OR..will she follow Talented-but-Poor Piano-man Michael (Lee Pace) to America, who loves her/but is leaving because he's Suffered-Enough. She's ALSO inhabiting the GORGEOUS Art Deco Digs of Nightclub-Owner Nick (Mark Strong) who has Claims-on-her...& is her Current Employer. Miss Pettigrew has her hands-full navigating Delysia through all the Testosterone here!
Miss Pettigrew meets Joe (Ciran Hinds) Early-On at a (Historically-) Interesting Undergarments Fashion Show. He's off-&-on engaged to a younger Fashionista, Edythe (Shirley Henderson), who knows enough of Miss Pettigrew's "secrets" to torpedo her new Secretarial Slot. (And Joe finds Miss Pettigrew to be Quite Attractive...)
All-in-all, this is a Fashionably-Fluffy Drama that rapidly "Grows-On-You". All the characters become rather-endearing, with the exception of Well-Acted "Ice-for-Veins" Edythe..heh! Plot & Sub-plots are Woven-Well by Writers David McGee and Simon Beaufoy, & Director Bhrarat Nalluri into the BUSIEST 24-Hour Time-Frame you'll ever see-on-Celluloid!
Some great Jazz Music takes you through the tail-end of the 1930's, as bomb-raid "practices" begin & England gets ready for harder-times. A good "7-Outta-10" Story about what Friendship, Survival, & "Getting-to-the-Top"..really means.
A bit of Mild Nudity, Nothin' too-Violent for the Kiddies, (& hey, even Your Grandma'll like this one! Some Great 1930's Settings!)) Original Toe-Tappin' Music by Paul Englishby will bring back memories of Henry Mancini.
JMO...Keep-or-Sweepit! Big Hugs, Stan

I guess the Reasons I didn't rate it even-Higher were: 1) It starts off Kinda-Slowly 2) Then..It runs like a Bat Outta Hell 3) &..It's more of a Gal-Flick than a Guy-Flick..& (Blush) I'm a Guy. 4) "Breakfast At Tiffany's" would be a "9" or "10" to measure-against This One. "Holly Golightly" wasn't as "Devious" as Amy Adams' Character is in this one...& maybe I got a Tidge of Morality I still prefer to See Onscreen? 5) Miss Pettigrew, herself, kept remindin' me of Mary Poppins, sans The Kids...zoomin' thru a Pygmalion Experience.
That Said, it IS Funny..& Sad in Parts..& pretty ZANY much of the time. I think IF ya like the '30's & London & Jazz, YEP..it's a Dandy. BUT...IF I get "All Enthused" & rate it any Higher..I'd kinda expect to get Pounded. I DO have a LOT of Respect for Amy Adams..A Gorgeous Hottie who can ACT..& ACT..& ACT~~~
She Sings Beautifully & Brilliantly too. ("9 1/2" for her Big Number at the Jazz Club!) Maybe it was the Lack of Brilliant/UN-expected Plot Twists at The End that dulled My Total Enthrallment Here. Good Movie...just not a Great One. JMO.
Big Guy-Hug, Stan
