Jim Pertik lives in my neighborhood. Maybe I can talk him into a collab?
Probably not, but that would be fun. Seems like a good enough guy.

There are hundreds of fantastic JPF writers I would love to write with. I am working on getting started on that very task.

I think perhaps we should create some type of contest, not for "best song" but simply for output of writing with new people. In fact, who would be interested in helping get it started?

Kurt Cobain and Diamond Dave. Let's make it to California type and make our own mark wherever.
When I discovered I did not have the knack I was interested in how I collaborate with myself through others thoughts.
I would like to find a couple of musicians for that someday.

I've always felt the same way... "Ownership" is always a problem when you're working with someone else. Collaborators have to be "in tune" lol, and focused on the end result. Most "lyrics only" guys don't get that... If you're not writing lyrics with at least a rhythm in mind then, yes, the singer is apt to change them. Collaborators must have a similar sense of style, or at least be willing to accommodate each other smile

My ultimate would be Kate Bush but that's not gonna happen! tongue

However! I have gotten to co-write with one of my other favorite artists: Charlotte Martin. I know many probably haven't heard of her, sadly, but she's been a favorite artist of mine since I heard her music in college (her album "Stromata" is AMAZING!)

Charlotte still writes music but she mostly focuses on lessons in voice and songwriting. I was one of the first students to sign up and she's still my teacher 4 years later. And we've co-written TWO songs together, one of which is coming out on an EP later this month! smile

I have all the 80's and 90's Synths to do Kate Bush... Now that I have a DAW and Plug Ins I have stuff to do about anything actually. Unfortunately my two primary vocalists are no longer around to sing.

Do we have any singers here? I haven't heard any on the boards in a while, but we do have a lot of folks who post on the JPF pages on Facebook who do.

Perhaps we should co-op Songwriting between say, 8 people who would each write with the other 7. That would be 56 songs!

Hey Japov, what is your set up? I heard some cool guitar riffs.

That's easy lol... Marshall.
I have a bunch of old 80s/90s analog gear so, I really don't do a whole lot of processing with the guitars in Logic-X wink

"Jim Pertik lives in my neighborhood. Maybe I can talk him into a collab?
Probably not, but that would be fun. Seems like a good enough guy."

Having written three songs with Jim and having him record one of them on his latest "Ides of March" 55th anniversry CD project, I can tell you he is a very nice guy and incredibly easy to talk to. Writing with him is a totally different area. He is besieged by people wanting to write with him, so he's very selective. And like most established writers, has to have a pretty good reason to include you in the writing.

I ended up working with him because we had a mutual friend, Joie Scott, who is a hit Nashville songwriter with hit songs on Colin Raye, and Shania Twain. Joie is from Chicago and knew Jim back in the commerical days when they both worked for an advertising agency out of Chicago. Jim has been working on breaking into Nashville over the past decade or so, and they both have the same song plugger, who is another mutual friend of all of ours. The two Nashville people recommended pulling me in on a writing session that Joie and Jim had, which led to another. I have more or less the same classic rock background as Jim, (grew up playing his songs from 38 SPECIAL and SURVIVOR, so we GOT each other.)
He also had a specific target he wanted to write for, a male, female duo he was producing. He wanted a "rock edge" but something that could translate into the country market. As it wound up, the duo did what most duos do, broke up, but Jim recorded it on the Ides of March, with himself and the current female singer for Starship, as a duet.

So like most things, writing with a hit established writer usually has to have more involved than just "calling up and asking to write." You really have to be recommended and have to get to know them before they accept you into their circle. But it can be fun. I highly reccomend it.

My fantasy co-write would be Taylor Swift.
Really liked some songs on "Midnights."
Other than me, old-people songwriter types usually don't like her, but I do.
I suspect that she could teach me a lot more about songwriting approaches and techniques than I could teach her.
