Initially set in the English Countryside, Summer of 1935, 13-year-old budding-writer Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan) reads, then delivers a mis-sent Lover's Message to her older sister, fetchingly-played by Keira Knightly (as Cecilia). Briony soon-after observes a steamy Clinch between her Sis and Robbie Turner, (Played by Next-Tom-Cruise-er, James McAvoy). Briony's Secret Crush on her sis's squeeze, and a bit of Jealousy, ends up in her making a false statement when a young guest is molested.
Robbie Turner's Prison Life gives way to Army Life, as WW2 empties English Prisons to provide Conscripts. Turner ends up in a Pivotal Scene set in Dunkirk, France..as the British Evacuation begins. By then, both sisters have donned Nurses' Uniforms..& Romola Carai plays 18-yr old, very-remorseful Briony. (Quite Well, I add!) Movie ends with Vanessa Redgrave playing a Much-Older Briony, as her ATONEMENT is completed.
I enjoyed the Romance, History, & Plot-Twists...Disliked the Constant Smoking On-screen by nearly All-Concerned..kept Expecting to see a {Fill-in-The-Brand} Tobacco Pack pop up like the "Guinnes Stout" ad DID on the back of a Double-Decker London Bus, as The Lovers-Got-Separated... Well-Filmed Contrast between the Spoiled Rich Life of the sisters in their Mansion, early-on..& the rigors of surviving WW2 for the later-part of the Movie..where the sis's have Barracks-Style & Walk-Up Brick Flats...& eventually, subway-tube Bomb Shelters.
One Uber-Critic dismissed this Flick as "A 3-Hankie-Weeper"...
I think it goes Beyond That, though DO get ready for a Sad Romance, & a "4th Hankie" Ending made it Pretty Good Viewin' for our Saturday Evening Out. I'd rate it "7 1/2-outta-10"..maybe even-Higher if you're a WW2 Buff or a Keira Knightly Fan.
I'm fast-becoming one...(& the Ladies'll all admire James McAvoy, I am sure.)
JMO...(Keep or Sweep-it)
Big Hugs, Stan

"If one man can do it, any man can do it. It is true. But the real question is, if one man did it, are you willing to do what it takes to do it as well?" –Brian Austin Whitney
