This is Ben Affleck's Second Directorial Debut since 1993's "I Killed My Lesbian Wife, Hung Her On A Meat Hook, & Now I Have a 3-Picture Deal at Disney". He's learned a LOT since then, and in "Gone Baby, Gone" he proves it well!
Set in a Lower-Income Boston Neighborhood, this gritty Detective Flick has all the Usual Hoodlums & Plotline: Child is Kidnapped, very few leads so A Private Dick is Hired. (Played convincingly-enough by Ben's Brother, Casey Affleck, as Patrick Kenzie.) There are the Usual SUB-Plotlines as-well: Cops (Including Morgan Freeman as Police Chief, with Ed Harris and John Ashton as Underlings) at-first Resent the P.I.-Intrusion into The Case...but good sleuthing wins them over & Away They All Go...as the Movie Progresses.
It also has a very impressive, totally-unexpected "Twist" which makes it a Fascinating Movie, while leaving ya with Mixed Emotions as the movie ends on what should be "A Happy Note".
Among the Questions the movie asks: "What are the Limits to a Cop's Duty in a Kidnapping Case?" and "IS a child's neglectful mother really the BEST choice when it comes to raising a kid?"
DO leave YOUR Kids At Home. (Lotsa Drugs, Shoot-Outs, & Seamy Bar Scenes & Characters.) ALL Very Adult-Entertaining, and the Casting, Acting, Filming, is of The Highest-Caliber. "8-outta-10" for Ben Affleck's Second Movie, I'd say. (I LOVE a Detective Flick where it keeps-ya-guessing..ALL through the Movie..& "Gone Baby, Gone" truly Delivers..BOTH "Entertainment-Wise" and with a Potent Parenting Message as-well.)
JMO...Keep-or-Sweep!
Big Hugs, Stan
