Howdy all!

Unlike so many of you brave souls, I never hunkered down and came up with an interpretative piece for the "school" song challenge; regrettable, I know, but I would've taken up so much time critiquing myself I'd have never found the time to work on THIS baby. So all's well that ends well...(I hope!)EDIT: HUNKERED DOWN LAST NIGHT...MY INTERPRETATION OF THE SCHOOL SONG CHALLENGE FOR YOUR PERUSAL....

ANYHOO, Wy and I have been bantering about this subject for a couple of days now, so I thought I better put my money where my mouth was (is?) wink wink......

As you peruse, please consider that I do like the hook/title, but I'm not sure if I'm mis-using it in the chorus -- I've never used any "spoken" elements in a song before.)

BTW, you MIGHT recognize the chorus...it was inspired by a song Corey wrote recently...don't know how that'll sit legally, but I'll cross that bridge (ha ha) when I come to it...

All comments welcome !!( OR READ: "payback for song challenge nit brigade...)

Something’s Brewing
© lyrics Beth Williams 2007

V1
Something’s brewing, I can always tell
I have a heightened sense of smell
It drifts upstairs swirls 'round my head
A fragrant siren lures me from bed

V2
Eyes at half-mast, my nose knows the way
Straight to the kitchen where I hear hubby say
“She’s arisen, boys and girls, give Mommy a kiss
Then back away slowly while I give her this…

(Cue sound of percussion rain stick music)

Chorus:
If you wanna wake up you’re gonna need a cup of
CAFFEINE
Folgers fresh from the pot, just how you like real hot
CAFFEINE
[Spoken] Something's brewing...
In your veins, like a train, to your brain
CAFFEINE

V3
One last lovely sip and I bolt for the door
Forget keys and kisses so zip back for more
Toot my horn in the drive-thru need my last morning dose
Need to make it to break time, it’s gonna be close

Bridge:
Made late by a call
I run down the hall
“Just de-caf” smiles Paul
Start shaking, withdrawal..

Chorus:
If your bed's calling you at just a quarter o' two
CAFFEINE
If you’re up kind late it’s time to percolate
CAFFEINE
[SPOKEN] Gotta get something brewing and...
Give a hug, to that drug, in your mug
CAFFEINE

Spoken Tag: Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?

Perky Perky Perky,
Beth grin

And there's the coffee song. Well, ya' beat me. Didn't get mime done.
Don't find that many nits on a couple read throughs. Caffeine is hit pretty hard, Looks like folks might think that's the name of the song. Something's brewing is only hit once. Maybe stick "something's brewing" spoken, in front on the C too?.
Uh, the third line in V 3 looks purty' long. Maybe condense it down to something like-------
Toot AT the drive-thru,need my last morning dose
(If you toot at the drive thru, we can figure it's gonna' be your horn <G>)
I may be back later.
Hmm "Perky" seems like a hook-----
She was purty perky
Till she came to a boil

Purty good song
Wy

WELL, I was wondering when you were gonna show your purty face and check this out....

Have read your comments, but they went in one eye and out the other, as we're sitting at the dinner table actually (maybe I should put this multitasking on the back burner until I heal sufficiently....)

Anyway, thanks for the read, and I will get back to revisit and comment on YOUR comments again later....

I can actually smell the coffee in this one. Maybe Folgers will rethink their current commercial song and replace w/yours. Fun read Beth!

Hey there Beth,
Save some of those beans for the rest of us!!

What a fun read. It makes me want to reach for another cup. "Give a hug, to the drug, that's in your mug", I think I mentally do that every day.

Wonderful fun song,
Eddie

Hey Beth!

I like this! A fun read.

My only nits would be - the hook needs to be used more & I wonder if it is "proper" to use a brand name in this way - I really don't know.

Fun one!

Back again, Wy...kids are tucked safe in their beds, so it's COFFEE TIME!!

First, while I'm leaning your way, I still have mixed feelings replacing the title. It just seems more engaging than CAFFEINE....though again, if I saw a song thusly titled, I'd be there in a heartbeat....so I'll have to sit on that a bit. PLUS, if I do want to make it work, I don't know how ( cry ), other than how I've tried so far....

And yes indeedy, I think we can do a bit of tightening up on V3line3....do you remember me telling about the naked drive thru guy here in town? That was a little nod to him...not that it affects things one way or the other...

Once again, our repartee has given me another hook idea...about "Tooting my own horn"...Of all the self-promoting brazen coffee drinkers on this board, who else would dare to take that on? Well, certainly someone with BRASS you know whats. (I'll have to borrow my husbands, but after the pancake debacle this morning, I think he'll serve 'em up)

Lastly, getting back to this song's hook....what do you think about including "SPOKEN" lines? I had never even really heard/seen it done except here...or didn't Rex Harrison sort of talk his way thru his songs?

Anyway, any additional comments would be welcome....
Beth

Hi Lynn (without the you-know-what wink )

I'm glad you liked it, I got a kick out of writing it too (LOL). As much as it would great for Folgers to take me on, I don't know that they would necessarily want a hopped up mommy representing them crazy! In fact, if I'm not careful, it's a very slippery slope to caffeine-meth....hard to get, but very potent stuff...you light it on fire, then you drink it...bad news... :o.

Seriously, thanks for the comments....it's fun to write some light stuff for a change...wait, don't I always write light stuff? Whatever....

Ciao for now,
Beth

Hey Eddie,

Glad you finally got to see a little something of mine beyond attempts at constructive criticism...in case you hadn't detected my particular brand of humor so far, it is dripping like molasses with sarcasm...(RED ALERT! RED ALERT! MIXED METAPHOR! MIXED METAPHOR!!!)

Oh well, I'll deal with the grammar police later.

Anyway, glad you enjoyed it...I actually had a hard time keeping it this short, as there are so many fun word plays you can use about coffee. In particular, I kept trying to think of something clever to rhyme with "java bean"....but all I could think of was Anthony Hopkins talking about Fava beans and cabernet or something in Silence of the Lambs. I have no problems making theatrical references, but gee, think I'll pass on that one.

Any

HI Calvin,

Glad you enjoyed the read. In truth, I'm hankering for some Folgers myself, but I'd be up for days if I gave in now..."Back in the Day" I could drink it as a nightcap, and I'd sleep like a baby...

I'm also chuckling, since unknowingly, you are reminding me to practise what has been preached (to me) -- i.e. LESS IS MORE. I think for every word you've written to me, I've probably thrown a hundred at you. But I'm ITALIAN, I'm from BOSTON, it's in my blood. STILL, I'll try to cut back a bit, give you back a few precious minutes of your life to use for better purposes!

So thanks all the way around!
Beth

Hey Charlann,

Good to "see" you!

You have hit on the same two troublesome spots I had posting this. I'm not overly concerned about the use of Folgers, as I suspect this song will never go further than this board....but I do want to make sure I'm ever-honing my technical skills. So as to the hook, it would be an easy fix to take Wy's suggestion and just call it CAFFEINE...or maybe I could play with it a bit more and try to make the original one work....

I guess I'll just let this "percolate" for a while longer...

Thanks again,
Beth

Hi Beth

Not sure about Rex Harrison but I do know that William Shatner aka Captain James T Kirk. speaks the words to his songs repeatedly lol. For another spoken words moment look to the lyrics for Eddie Raven's "Joe Sure Knows How to Live". To answer a post from earlier where you asked me a question about my moniker ajk. I was originaly on MSN chat known as averagjo. Well I signed up once on JPF as averagjo and it didn't take so I could't use that one again. I was known on MSN as aj or joe. So I was trying to figure the best way to incorporate my name in the same way so I thought AJ? Then I thought no it needs to be something different so I decided AJK as average joe kind. So there ya go thats why lol.

Hi Bethh,

This one makes me hearken back to the days it took me a half pack of cigarrettes and a pot of coffee to open one eye. Way before I got healthy. Of course those days give my muse lots of fodder. I really like this one. It's a neat song. I woould call it "Caffeine", or inclde your title before caffeine in the chorus, as suggested. Good luck with this one.

Hey Average Joe Kind,

Thanx for the explanation, though now that the mystery's gone, well, I dunno... grin

Also OOOOOOOOH, how cruel to point out an extra "-ing" at this ungodly hour of the morning!! You didn't even tell me where it WAS, forcing me to review all my posts -- WOE IS ME!! Thank the lord for Folgers, and a mug the size of a small rowboat (is that redundant?)

I have made the correction accordingly. Thank you for looking over my weary shoulder...

XOXO,
Beth

P.S. Hey, did you like the song? I missed that, distracted as I was by that blasted police siren grin....

P.S.S. That would be hysterical to hear Captain Kirk "sing" this one....

I'm weak. I changed the title to CAFFEINE. I'll probably get rid of all those extra "something's brewing" or maybe when I get a bit more caffeine in me, I'll go back and switch her up all together...

Hey Beth!

I can hear this as an adult sing-a-long song. Kind of like Brad Paisley's "Alcohol." I think the whole crowd sang along when I saw hime last summer!

Hey Derek,

There's another great word when spelled backwards is something fun...oh I know, STRESSED. Switch her around and you've got DESSERTS!

As for your spoo, I'm afraid I'm not following...but that doesn't prevent me from enjoying your little run with it...

Also, glad you DID like the song...again, I gave in on the title because 1) it made sense and 2) I was too tired at the time to try to work on the original title.

Sadly, my visit to the doctor shed some additional light on why I've been so weary...aside from lack of sleep, and trying to juggle crutches and tend to variuos broken things (on top of my regular underlying condition), it turns out that my sprained left ankle (from stumble on beach a couple weeks back) isn't sprained at all....it's BROKEN!

So I'm currently sporting a very stylish air-cast....the mandatory white on the outside, a lovely shade of mint green on the interior. I guess I"ll be heading to the hospital later in the week for a more comprehensive bone scan study -- fun fun fun.

This of course, immediately brings to issues to my attention:
1) Do I need to update my cast-away song? 2) Will they have a NON-white version for me to wear after Labor Day? Bad enough I'm limping around like an old lady, the least they could do is have seasonal alternatives...

Anyway...that's the latest!

Ciao for now,
Bumpity Bump Bump Beth

Hey Charlann,

Glad you like it....but in all honesty, what do you think about the blatant robbery of the "COCAINE" chorus meter? I remember during the American Idol songwriting contest, there was much ado about one of the finalists similarity to a couple of other songs....

Not that I suspect this will ever go anywhere, but do you (or does anyone else) know if this is a copyright infringement?

Ciao for now, Charlann....

Hi Beth,

Well I do not drink coffee at all, neither does my wife; nor do I smoke. But believe me...I have a ton of other bad habits! Just ask any of the several folks on this board who know me personally! It seems that my underwear has been the biggest topic of discussion lately by those folks!

Although I cannot empathize with the singer, I can certainly sympathize. I drink 6 or 8 Dr. Peppers a day. And when I run out, due to poor planning, I get a little antsy. I like "Caffiene" for the title. And some folks are gonna make that reference to the song "Cocaine". You asked if it was copyright infringement that the metering of the chorus was like that of the song "Cocaine". It depends. If you mean the melody is the same or very, very similar, then yes, it could be. However, if you keep the beat the same, but the melody line runs differently, that would probably be okay.

I think you have a lot of very creative and intersting lines. I agree with Calvin for the favorite lines.

Best of luck to ya!

Al

Hey Al,

I forgot about your underwear :o...I hope that doesn't make me a bad person...but perhaps makes you feel a little less self-conscious the next time you pull into a rest stop!!

Anyway, thanks for the kind words. I also appreciated your comments about copyright issues. Of course the ONLY melody I can hear in my rattling little head is from "COCAINE", so perhaps one of you fine musicians out there can whip something up to help me think otherwise!!

It's interesting that you mentioned your "other bad habits"; that was something I was trying to fit in....that at the end of the day, if this is the singer's only vice, then she's not such a bad person after all! Though I don't think I'm casting judgement on the her, just sort of yanking her chain. Ultimately, there just wasn't enough room...maybe I'll work on that bandied-about sequel.... smile

Thanks for stopping by,
Beth

Hi Beth,

Very catchy and well-written. And a subject that tens of millions will identify with, and THAT'S a good thing!

Love your tag.

Funny, I've always said I only drink coffee during final exams...still do (say that!)...but it HAS been over 30 years since my FINAL final, so I ain't had much lately. Actually, I used to be up/awake until the wee hours after a ball game, from having drank a dozen or so Cokes, never knowing they had the dreaded "C." Which reminds me of a verse I wrote....OK, a verse I'm writing as we speak! smile

When you're feelin' tired
Can't seem to open your eyes
Caffeine
When there's work to be done
But your motor won't run
Caffeine
Up all night, up all night, up all night
Caffeine

Nice work.
Ben

Thanks Ben!

As much as I joked about it for so long with Wy, it literally flowed from my pen. No ambiguity with THIS subject!

I used to be able to drink caffeine at any hour, no longer. But as a rule, I just like a REALLY BIG MUG in the morning, and at the holidays after a big dinner. Maybe an occasional afternoon cup when it's really cold outside..

As for ICED COFFEE, now there's another matter indeed. To think of all the money I saved this year by being unable to drive for months...I wouldn't be surprised if Dunkin Donuts stock went down a bean or two...

Anyway, thanks for the visit...will be around here and there tonight, I've got some reading to catch up on...

Cheers,
Beth

Hello Beth,

I guess 25 26 27 replies and a flamin' little icon should have raised a flag. Unfortunately it did not... and now I find myself with nothing new to offer but a ditto flavored compliment to be used as you see fit.

Mucho respect,
Dog

P.S. ... are you now or have you ever been on assisted oxygen? Your avatar (and writing habits) imply that you might.

Pogo,

You are a rascal to be sure....and while you may not have come up with an original comment about my song per se, the manner in which you explained your circumstance was quite flattering. So hey, jokes on the rest of them, huh? You do squat, and still get a pat on the back from me? grin Hmmmmmm, I'm learning more each day here....

As to my oxygen use, you might search back a ways for my song entitled "Manic Attack"....that is, if you're referring to my TENDENCY towards run-on sentences, rapid thoughts, and the occasional meandering loose association!

If you are in fact referring to a legitimate medical issue (as I'm not sure how my avatar would fit in with the jesting one), I do actually have a medical condition which affects my muscles, joints and connective tissue (and skin, hence hiding from the sun)...and since the lungs are a muscle, in fact I have to be on the lookout for signs of Interstitial Lung Disease....I also had a pulmonary nodule with spiculation removed a couple years back...Benign, thankfully.

All that aside, the only times I needed oxygen were when I pumped out a couple of kids, and also when I broke the arm and the morphine (3 rounds of it, I might add) weren't touching the pain and I thought I was going to faint.

OTHERWISE, my good man, I am fit as a fiddle (granted, a very old, broken fiddle, but one still hoping to inspire with an occasional beautiful piece of music)

In the future, I might suggest you create an answer form for me....a simple "check this box only" might save you a bit of time....Did you feel yourself actually getting older during the course of reading this post???

Ciao for now,
Beth

Hi Beth... You make so many of us smile... smile Glad you found JPF.......

This is super...Excellent title choice...wondered about just one thing... Look at your lead into the first chorus..?
It would probably be a change up from your rhythm but I wondered if it might work to start out with the word Caffeine?

cause..last line of verse ends in..

give her this...

Caffeine?

sweep or keep gal... Enjoyed this read...and I love my coffee smile

Hey Kaley,

Thanks for stopping by! I am so glad you did, because I believe your suggestion will help me separate this chorus from the COCAINE song chorus I'm worried about replicating (actually, I started with that chorus...and worked backwards to make it into a coffee song.)

Maybe to push it even further, we could go with sort of a reggae sound (inspired by the tranquil rain stick, which sounds like flowing water....)... OF course, I might then have to add a tag from JOe DiMaggio saying "Don't worry, mon, be happy!" Ha Ha.

Gonna let that sit, then work up the edits tomorrow.

Thanks so much, Kaley!
Beth

That is surely a shame....between that and the imagined sight of a certain "lady" unable to navigate her way under the limbo bar due to her ...um...ample pontoons, we would have had some pretty decent footage for that visual arts forum. Course, it might have been a bit more low-brow than what they're used to, but hey, art is subjective, right? grin.

Seriously, no worries. Let me just take my vitals one more time before heading to bed....NOT! I wouldn't know a vital if it hit me in the head (and with my luck, that very well could happen).

WOW. If that's the case -- someone ELSE's foot in your mouth -- that would most definitely up the ante over on that Visual Arts forum... grin

We might want to run it by Brian first ... whistle

Aww poor beth

If it wasn't for bad luck you wouldn't have no luck at all. Well I can assure you I'll be praying for a speedy recovery. So you can be back out there twisting with the best of em. You never did say if you were gonna work on a sequel to caffienne about mountain dew? Eagerly await your most grammaticly correct flowery response.

Good morning, Derek,

I know, this is getting so predictable sleep. But wait til you hear the spin I'll put on it for my holiday newsletter -- the words will be dancing right off the page!

As for a Mountain Dew sequel, I might have trouble with that one -- I don't drink soda. Yes, I'm a purist. grin Needless to say, a GATORADE ditty would be completely unbelievable, given my propensity towards, well, injury. The only way I'd need some extra electrolytes would be after perhaps an exhaustive walk from the den to the kitchen. I've already done the pills route, I dunno. I might have to move on to MOUNTAIN GREENERY pastures...ha ha ha.

At some point, I might do a companion piece with some other vice of mine...yall will just have to see which one I'm thinking about!

Thanks for sending some positive energy!

Cheers,
Beth

Hey Beth G,

Derek stole my line.
However, this coffee thing and one of your remarks, done generated another song start. Don't know if it'll ever be postable or not though-----------

As for which vice to write about, believe it or not, I have quite a pocketful to choose from. Stay tuned....

HiDee Mz B!

That "lifted" Chorus Melody's kind of tough to avert the Lawyering Set, alas!

But, this is Good Fun overall, methinks!

"Siren" in V1 kinda kills its chances in Da Country Market...JMO.

Chorus 1, (Assuming New Title's "Caffein") I'd change "brewing" to "Rolling" in my veins, since ya make reference to "train" next line & trains Don't "brew" very much...unless you're back in the Steam Era.

Bridge is Fun, tho "Paul" comes outta nowheres, just to make a Rhyme, I fear?

DO like the "late/Percolate" Rhyme!

Methinks ya could come up with a VERY Commercial Lyric dealing with "Starbucks" as the Center of Attention..insteada Caffein, since they're in Both the Coffee Biz AND the CD Distribution Biz nowadaze! (I got an Ole One back at Board 1..2?..titled "Did You Get Any This Morning?" on the Coffee Habit..heh-heh!) Think the last Successful Coffee Song was back in the '40's..."Another Cuppa Joe" or something like dat.

Market's RIPE for a good "Coffee Song"...Good Luck with This Baby, M'Lady!

Big Hugs,
Stan

Hey there Beth,

You gonna have to put oon your nancy drew cap and help me find my missing post to this. Let me see if i can remember everything i said...

I liked the verses, they were quirky, the chorus... well, i couldn't help but sing the chorus like it was being done as a parody of eric claptons Cocaine. might be an issue there. but you may be singing it completely different. (i didn't read any of the other cdrits, so if i am behind the 8 ball, i apologise.

hope all your limbs are intact, and everything is healing real good.

cheers,

-steve

Hey Stan,

Just getting a few mid-day minutes, thanks to a neighbor's kind invitation to sweep my kids away to go swim in her pool, to give me some quiet time....there are a few PERKS to this broken limb business after all!

To be truthful, this whole song did sort of start as a parody...I had mentioned the song Cocaine to Corey the other night, and for some reason it sounded close enough to CAFFEINE -- with the help of Wy mentioning coffee in virtually every post, the poor tired soul -- then the whole song followed. So yes, the chorus is a total rip-off of that song.

But now that I'm having fun with the rest of the song, I might try to tweak it to make it a bit less recognizeable and to take into consideration some of the other comments made along the way.

Yes, "Paul" was a flagrant Just For the Rhyme Crime. I had a lot of trouble with that verse, need to work on it.

Are you serious about making a song about Starbucks? Would be a tough sell for me, since I'm not a fan of their hot coffee (frappucinos, that's another story!!).

In the meantime, I'm NOT going to go look at your version just yet, b/c it'll likely depress b/c it'll be so much more clever than mine, and I need to hang on to my positive momentum right now.

Lastly, I believe that old time song is....

I love coffee, I love tea
I love the java and the java loves me
Coffee and tea, and the java and me,
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a CUP -- AH!!

These are the problems we run into when are parents make us listen to the Inkspots and that whole gaggle of Jazzercisers -- LOL!. LOVE all that music.... Do YOU know the song "Making Believe", a duet with the Inkspots and Ella Fitzgerald? I mentioned it to someone on here...great song...

So thanks for the visit my main man, and for the sugs....will hopefully dabble with it later, make it more palatable -- legally and otherwise!!

Currently Enjoying a BREW-ski,
Beth

"Just because...."

On the way back from docs, I of course had to hit the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru for my iced coffee (medium, light cream, no sugar, thanks for asking wink ). The car in front of me had bumper stickers galore, so I was passing the time reading and chuckling along as I waited my turn. This one was my favorite:

"DRINK COFFEE....DO STUPID STUFF FASTER!"

That alone was worth the price of my drink!! Whaddya say, Wy? Pretty good, huh? :o

Still sipping,

well I was driving wearily and decided to try one of those one shot super caffeinated drinks, and lo and behold the taxi had a sun roof and my head was sticking out of it. At this juncture I decided to roll the hard top down and decapitated myself, but no big deal, I was feeling no pain, and took my head in hand and placed it on the dash, right in the middle, wowsa great view, out with bucket seats, and in with a cockpit car, can you count the cash, mega millions blah, blah, blah, Bill Gates nah, nah, nah, rittman, stupidly speeding towards oblivitivity!!!
