Howdy ya'all,

Just had to share a tiny bit of unexpected good news about the song Harriet and I collabed on that we had demoed during the Demo Derby...THE ONLY LADDER HERE. It is a rather personal song I wrote about a friend of mine named Judy, who lives not far from me way out in the rural area of TN. It is one of those songs that we all do from time to time that we have no expectation that it would ever be commercial. It's just one of those things that just beg to be written anyway. After Harriet put her magic to my lyrics, one evening she played the song for Judy who got all teary eyed she was so touched.

Well, after we got the song demoed, we had dinner earlier this week with Judy and gave her a copy of the mixed song that Mike had given us. Needless to say, Judy was REALLY impressed with the song. She happens to work at this place not far from Piney House called the Recovery Ranch, a rehab center. One of the other folks who works there is Charlie Garner, whom some of you may remember from when we had Pineyfest in Centerville. Charlie is a phenomenal guitar man who played on the Grand Ol Opry and backed all kinds of big name singers for many years. Charlie has a Saturday morning radio show on KIX96. Two years ago, he had some of the Pineyfesters come on his show and perform (Bob Young, Emily Sanders, Harriet Ames) and I got to talk about Pineyfest.

Well, when Judy let Charlie listen to LADDER...he liked it so much he played it this morning on his radio show! Sooo...even though I had no idea he was going to do it and didn't hear it on the radio myself...a Demo Derby song actually got AIRPLAY!! How cool is that? I know it's nothing earth shattering but it was fun to hear anyway. Just wanted to share this little bit of good news with you folks! grin

It's the top song on Harriet's sound click page
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=24419

The song below it is the pre-demo version that Mike and the Demo Derby guys got to listen to. This is where it started!

Hugs,
Bobbie

The Only Ladder Here
© 2005 Lyrics by Bobbie Gallup ASCAP, Music by Harriet Ames ASCAP

She lives way back in the holler
Near a bend in Pretty Creek
Bought a little farm with rustic charm
Where she's got everything she needs

Folks ask her why she moved there
A lovely lady in her prime
Her city friends don't understand
But they visit to unwind

Lift:
Judy, Judy, Judy
How can you live out here
No family or friends for miles
Just your horses and the deer
She says,

CHORUS:
The only ladder here
Reaches the hayloft in the barn
'N that rusty truck sure hauls my hay
Better than some fancy car
I climbed that corporate ladder
'N when I reached that upper rung
I saw that bright lights and nightlife
Sure weren't my kind of fun

I cook with fresh herbs from my garden
I know what's in my food
The water here is crystal clear
And I know I've got it good

In summertime the nightingales
Sing me lovingly to sleep
Alone does not mean lonely
When it's peace of soul you seek
'Cause...

CHORUS:
The only ladder here
Reaches the hayloft in the barn
'N that rusty truck sure hauls my hay
Better than some fancy car
I climbed that corporate ladder
'N when I reached that upper rung
I saw that bright lights and nightlife
Sure weren't my kind of fun

TAG:
Alone does not mean lonely
When it's peace of soul you seek

Bobbie,
Any time one of our "babies" get to be acknowledged by being played on the airwaves, it is a huge event!!! It's kind of like our "child's" first birthday party! Congrats and I feel that we are going to hear more great things from you on this song and others real soon!

Thanks all,

and thanks for posting this Bobbie....
I'm just thrilled ..almost beyond words (well... I am a writer...so I do have words crazy )
What you may not remember Bobbie, is back when all of us were "supposed" to be on Charlie's morning show.... there wasn't time for all of us to do so. I was with you the week before Pineyfest...and sat next to you while he interviewed you... I think my one contributing word was "yes" LOL
and the next week when Bob and Emily were with us... Charlie ran out of time before I got a chance to sing and talk with him.
So I have waited for this for a loong time.
It was so cool to give a report to my friends last night
"how was your trip to Nashville?"
and to tell them all about Pineyfest and the demo derby culminating in Charlie Garner playing the song yesterday....
I am PSYCHED UP!!!!!!!!!

I am out at my cabin for the weekend....
but will post the finished demo tomorrow (or maybe tonight if my computer cooperates quickly

I'm with you Mike....
I really wish I could have heard the broadcast (or even better been there live)
Fact is I drove home on Thursday... (Hubby says he missed me..... or maybe he was tired of cooking for himself every night LOL)
I would have gladly stuck around another couple days for this had I known.

My computer and soundclick were both giving me fits tonight (this morning?) but I finally got the song uploaded.
It's the top song on my sound click page
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=24419

immediately underneath is the original demo I gave Mike to work with... just shows what they can build out of so little

Gosh, Harriet, that sounds good in MP3. You ought to post it over at the MP3 forum.

Thanks for letting us play on your song.

Hi Harriet and Bobbie,

Yes, this turned out very, very nice. And the vocal is so clear and crisp and happy. Kudos on that! Like Bobbie's message too. I used to dream of living way out in the country with a garden and everything like my grandparents. Those who have their own garden live better than kings and queens, imo.

Hi, Bobbie!!

When I read this good news, I jumped out of my chair! I'm so happy I could bust a gusset LOL smile smile smile

CONGRATULATIONS to you and Harriet. I have such great memories of performing at that radio station...what a cool place.
Charlie's such a breath of fresh air- so gracious, kind and genuine...a rare breed indeed!
May you have many more of your fabulous hits played on the radio smile

Love ya!

Thank you SO much, Heidi!! You are definitey right about this being much like someone acknowledging that they think your baby is adorable. I just wish Harriet, Mike and I had known he was going to play it so we could have listened! grin I like going to birthday parties!! I am just guessing that some of the folks who heard the song would have recognized the location as being local because I am not sure how many Pretty Creeks there are. When Jim Troutner made a few copies for us to give away, he asked Harriet and I if we knew where Pretty Creek got its name and we didn't. He said that way back when folks were naming places around here there was a family that lived out there that had a bunch of very pretty daughters. Later when we were having dinner with Judy and my friend Jane, they said that was true and furthermore that not far away is a place called.."Ugly Creek"...where there was a family whose children were not so fortunately endowed. A sad but probably true fact of life back then.

I appreciate you sharing our delight in this little bit of progress. Just goes to show that one never does know which songs will catch on. Both Harriet and I wanted to get this demoed just because it was one of those that really meant something to someone. Mike and the boys worked wonders on the backing music and Harriet's marvelous vocals just brought this whole thing together so beautifully...at least IMO. I could not be happier with it.

Hope more folks will take advantage of future Demo Derbies. LOL Of course we can't promise airplay for all Derby songs...but like this one...you just never know.

Thanks to Harriet...and to Mike and all the session players for creating magic on this one.

And thank you, Heidi, for checking this out and for your sweet thoughts!! Much appreciated!

Hugs,
Bobbie

Howdy Beth,

I'll happily provide inspiration!! In all humility, I think we all write from our hearts and when something good happens...it is usually a great surprise to us all. I just wanted to share the pleasure Harriet and I both got from this. We primarily wanted to demo it just because we knew the song meant so much to Judy...an affirmation of making a huge decision in her life. Her friend Jane told me after we gave the song to her that it could not have come at a better time as Judy has been going through some tough family times and had been feeling rather down about things recently. This was just the boost she needed. One more affirmation that there IS a plan behind everything that happens.

Thank you for the support!!

Hugs,
Bobbie

Howdy John H,

I dunno if I am proud as much as I am just plain ol' tickled to know that some local folks really enjoyed this one. It was just unanticipated more than anything. I could have taken the song to Charlie but hadn't thought of it (yet)..so it was mostly a surprise. Thanks for the kind thoughts!

Hugs,
Bobbie

Hi Vanessa,

Harriet got it loaded on her SoundClick site so yes, you can now hear it!! I edited in the link to her site at the top of the thread so folks can find it. Thank you SO much for the encouragement. We had a great time doing this song and Judy's sincere appreciation was payment enough...so everything else is just added blessing!! Needless to say we are both tickled with this.

Hugs,
Bobbie

Howdy John S...

I think this is one you would enjoy. It is rather traditional-sounding...and partly because of the subject matter. I just posted the lyrics up top so folks can read them while they listen. Forgot to do that earlier.

Thanks for checking this out. We are purty tickled with the response so far.

Hugs,
Bobbie

Howdy Joanne,

Well it looks/sounds like your patience was truly rewarded!! Your songs are incredible!! You are SO polished!

Yeah that whole Demo Derby experience was just a real rush!! Now that we are getting to hear the final mixes I couldn't be MORE PROUD of everyone involved and thrilled to have been part of creating such incredible music in such a short time!! You are ALL to be congratulated!!

Mike has decided to keep the Demo Derby to just folks coming to Pineyfest in the future. Folks can still send in songs to do the same thing via mail but the cost will be higher for that...because it is more work for him when folks are not available to ask questions on site. Plus he just wants to support Pineyfest and Pineyfesters in this manner. Gotta LOVE that guy!!

BTW...thanks for the deodorant! LOL

Big Fester Hugs,
Bobbie

LOL thanks Charlann,

We feisty ones do a few surprising things on occasion! Harriet and I had fun with this one, probably partly because neither of us felt any need to make this commercial...and look what happened! grin

Bobbie

Howdy Harriet,

Glad one of us has half a memory! grin I did remember the second trip to Charlie's show but not the first one. Guess that was to let the locals know about Pineyfest 4. I did recall the second trip where Bob and Emily got to play live. I also remember nudging you to get up and sit in the interview/performers chair and you wouldn't go. grin Gotta be a lil more assertive sometimes! I am just pleased as punch that Charlie DID play our song!! Maybe he will play it again if I remind him...which I certainly will do. I may just go there on Saturday and give him his own copy of the song.

Thanks so much for posting the song on your site...and mostly for creating such awesome music for this!! I think I'll keep you my dear! grin

Many hugs,
Bobbie

Hey John H,

She's not all THAT quiet! LOL She gets just as rowdy as the rest of us Pineyfest Feisty Ones!! Don't let her looks fool ya! She does top shelf music though! I have been the lucky recipient of quite a few of her great melodies in the past.

But keep an eye on her! She'll sneak up on ya when you are least expecting it!

Hugs,
Bobbie

Thank you Tampa!!

Sure appreciate the congrats!! WIthout Harriet's melody and great vocals and Mike's magical mixing..this would still be languishing as a lyric instead of getting on the air and heard by...well, maybe 15 people or so! LOL Appreciate the kind thoughts on this'un!

BPH,
Bobbie

Howdy Mike the Man!!

I wish we ALL had been able to hear it. I am gonna go give Charlie his own copy and maybe he will play it again sometime. I just listened to the MP3 on Harriet's site and it sounds great there too!! You are amazing...and the Demo Derby guys are musical magicians!! Thank you SO much!

Big happy hugs,
Bobbie
