HEY, calling all Seattlite JPF'ers-- I would REALLY like to get something together, at least some kind of "meet n greet" to meet and get to know you and maybe (even better) hear you play and stuff. I know Scott's coordinator, but I think he'll back me on this (right Scott??), so what do y'all say? Please reply here if you're interested and we'll talk locations, dates, and all that jazz. I'll be better able to plan something out after school starts (Sept 5th for us), but I can THINK about it now. I would really really REALLY like to hold/host some kind of casual event where whoever wants to can just get together and jam. Or gab. Or whatever. Y'know... a JPF party. It doesn't have to be a formal showcase or anything (that would be great too!). And if it was regular, like every month/every other month, that would be even better. C'mon guys, don't tell me this Mormon gal over here knows how to party more than the rest of ya! Ha! (No alcohol... no drugs... no funny stuff... but hey I still have lots of fun!!) Let's do somethin'!!! Linda

Aw, man. Nobody wants to get together for brownies or nuthin??? Guess I'd better start singing "I'm All Alone" or something. LOL Maybe I'll just hold it at my place and invite myself. That'll work... Scott Andrew, where are you man? Oh, I know, busy with a new CD release. Anyway.... I'd love to meet a few more of you Seattle JPF'ers in person. Anyone up for busking @ Pike Place? Linda

Linda, do you ever get south? There's a couple of us in Oregon (Derek in Salem and me around Medford). Oregon isn't quite on another planet, y'know--it just acts that way.

Hi Derek! Hi Joe!
YES, I do sometimes get to Oregon!!! I lived in Hood River for about 3 years long long ago--first 2 kids were born in Hood River Hospital. I still need to go back for a visit to my old friends.
AND my in-laws are in Corvallis. (They were in Newport for a LONG time, so it's still weird to say "Corvallis.")
So on a trip down to see family--it would be easy to plan ahead and work out either a side trip or some extra time to tootle around and hang out or do a songwriters circle or showcase thingymabob or just eat brownies. LOL
That would be awesome! I would really enjoy meeting you both. Thanks for replying!!
Linda

Cool ok we have to plan this. I work graveyard so my schedule is pretty much open. I think the best way might be for us to meet in corvallis area so Joe doesn't have to go so far north. Though at some point it would be awesome fun to meet up in your neck of the woods as well Linda. Either way yes it would be awesome to do some round table discussion of lyrics JPF music or just eat brownies! Heck it might be fun if either of you has portable recording device tascam or whatever to do some composing! I'll bring my acoustic 12 string and keyboard plus 3 microphones and two amps! Hey maybe we could even put on a show lol! Ok now I'm dreaming but hey dreaming is fun! Seriously though we have to find a way to make this happen gotta get JPF going in the northwest! Sincere Blessings Derek

Derek, I do have a little Tascam 4-channel job. Also a decent singing mike, and a Strat if anybody needs a spare guitar. (Usually, I only take the J-200 on the road--it's got an airline-proof case.) I also have--never used--an old (eBay) 6-channel battery-powered mixer, which I figured would be ideal if I ever had to record something live.
The Tascam's main limitation, besides not being able to record more thaqn 2 of its 4 channels at the same time, is it's li'l pea brain (literally--a digital camera chip) can usually hold only one song at a time. I usually off-load its song to a computer (my computer thinks it's a portable hard drive), wipe the chip and start over. These days, they have fancier Tascams that record to a CD. Mine ain't one of those. It's old and cheap, like me. But I can bring it.
I like brownies.
Joe

Hey Joe
You know none of us (that I know of) have super professional gear and really I think that's fine. If all you had was a tape recorder (like 20 bucks at walmart) I'd say bring it. It's mostly about fun in my opinion and it would be awesome to have something fun to post to the mp3 board showing our respective talents. Man this is sounding like it's gonna be a lotta of fun! Can't wait! Sincere Blessings Derek

I don't have super-pro gear either. I have a small Behrninger electric mixer, no PA system, an Ibanez bass and amp (no case for the guitar though, not sure about just chucking it in the car), and 2 Shure mics (condenser for recording, and dynamic for live voice). I don't have portable recording just now. Hoping to fix that the next time I can put a little $ into equipment. My MIL is having hip replacement surgery in November, so we won't be heading down your way until after she's recovered from that. It could be a few months... but it may take a little time to plan this thing anyway! Since there is travel involved for each of us. Also, would any of you know any venues where we could set up and play? Not sure we could use my in-law's place. LOL!! Joe, maybe sometime we could just crash one of your gigs. haha. Sounds awesomely fun! Let's keep planning! I'll bring the brownies. Linda

Linda, y'all could crash one of my gigs. It would be fun--I keep telling these guys a lot of my songs sound better with real musicians, and they don't believe me. (And I can play lead guitar, if it's country enough--but not when I'm playing rhythm and doing an imitation of singing.) But I don't have many gigs yet--the one coming up 1 November is actually my second "come see Joe" gig that's being promoted in the newspaper, et al. If we pack the place (like we did last time) then I might be on a roll.
You don't have to worry about the expense of portable recording equipment. If you have patience, and keep your eyes and ears open, it happens. All my "studio" stuff probably cost under $200 total, and the "studio" I built in the garage cost somewhere under $10 (for the screws--I had everything else kicking around).
I don't have a clue about venues in Corvallis. I could arrange a place to play down here, I think, with enough advance notice, but it's kind of a fur piece for everybody but me to travel. Do you (or anybody) know someone at the University?
Joe

Hi Joe, I don't know anyone at any University right now. I don't know if I count as a "real musician" either... not yet... I can't just jump in on the keys and follow what everyone else is doing. Only experience might teach me that! (hmmm) I hope your gig is packed though! I just emailed the local NSAI people and got a letter back--they meet every 3rd Saturday in Tacoma. I'm going to try to get on board with that too. What are the odds we could try and meet at one of those meetings? ... They probably have an Oregon chapter too--I only looked up the Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia area. http://nashvillesongwriters.com/news.php?viewStory=214This should take you to the lookup page. Let me know what you think of this avenue. Linda PS: Even so--if I ever COULD crash one of your gigs, I'd do it! I can come sing the Underwear Song and fit right in!!

Linda, I don't know if there is. There's a Portland Songwriters Assn., that I was briefly in touch with but never joined (too far away), and a Portland Folk Music Society, but I never found anything else. Maybe they just hide good. There's reportedly a pretty active live music scene in Portland, but I got the impression very little of it was country music. That's the same case down here in southern Oregon (lots of would-be folkies and rockies), but I'm eddicatin' 'em best I can. I've asked several of them to be the band for the next CD.

Scott Andrew, where are you man? Oh, I know, busy with a new CD release. He finally finished and released it last month. its pretty good too. Hi Linda, I'm one of the JPF Seattle folks. There are a few others still out there but I am not sure how often they wander by. Some only signed up so they would be in a showcase. We used to have a showcase every quarter or so. Put together by Scott Andrew and Barb Buckland. I've been busy with the 'day' job for a long while and my spare time for cruising the forums has suffered. I'm getting back in a bit now. Its good to see the Seattle board didn't die a quiet death just yet.

Hi Doug! Nice to meet you!! Thanks for stopping by. I'd like to have at least some little get-together (we can use my little house) every quarter or six months or something if at all possible. Glad to see you can get back into it a little bit. No quiet death just yet. I do think it's odd that traffic/activity is so low, for SEATTLE.... we're not exactly a small music community, are we? Hi Linda - I didn't see this thread before, but since there doesn't seem to be a chapter on Vancouver Island, I asked Scott if I could participate in any Seattle JPF events. Doesn't seem to have been anything recently. But keep me apprised if you organize something - be great to meet you all. I'd love to sing 'Cat and the Strat' live with Joe, hee hee.

I'm a week late too this event! Drats! Hey Seattle, what'd you think about the snow? Didn't Andy Wapler sound a little like Snoop Dogg doing the weather..."There's going to be freezing drizzle..." I wanted to say..."For Shizzle? I'm off the hizzle!" Okay...so what's next? Lemme hear from you! Do any of you attend the Songwriters of the Northwest Guild? www.songnw.com? Keeping it rizzle! Terrill

Do any of you attend the Songwriters of the Northwest Guild? www.songnw.com?Hi Terrill, I used to go, but then the open mike at crossroads mall started competing by only being on the same night as the songnw meeting. Then my boss killed both by making me work EVERY Thursday night. I did get to meet some interesting folks. The guys that run it are pretty good and have gotten some cuts & won a few contests. Maybe when Linda gets back (or Scott gets bored) we can get something going. I can always take vacation to show up if I have to.

Is Linda back? Is Scott bored? Hello? Is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me. Is there anyone at all?

Hi Terrill, Glad you're out here - I'm not really "back" yet - still overwhelmed by life in general at the moment, but working on it. I'd be up for a get-together if it's a couple weeks or so away and uh, not at my house this time... my brain-deficiency is leading to the house being much more "lived-in" than normal - eek. (In case y'all missed out on what's up over here, in the month of April: -my favorite cat ever died... -a sweet elderly friend died... - my close friend in MO's hubby died in a car accident at 43... -another elderly friend died... -two other people we'd helped from church also died (young - both in their early 40's). I've stepped back to process all this grief dumped on me at once.) I don't mean to complain or anything, but when my brain has this much gunk to process, it doesn't work super-great on too many levels. Ha. So I have to avoid posting... just in case I don't make any sense. I've been pretty scattered. Yardwork and gardening is about the only therapy that's working right now. So things are looking nice and pretty... OUTside the house... Anyway I'd be glad to come jam somewhere though and meet you all. I can still bring brownies. The baking part of my brain is in overdrive too... to the misfortune of my thighs... which, I'm hoping the extra exercise in the yard & walking a couple miles a day will help offset. Ha. Thanks for asking about me I don't come on the boards much lately, but I'm watching this topic, so it comes straight to my email, which I'm still checking. But mostly, I'm outside, planting stuff. Linda

PS Ponyo - is "Songwriters in Seattle" the name of the meetup? I didn't find it last time I was out there searching for local jam sessions. Wish I coulda made the session. I was in Missouri that day helping my friend cope with her husband's sudden death.
I'd be glad to join it though. I run a small writers' group with my friend Leesa and we use Meetup to schedule everything. It's a great site.
I signed up on a Meetup, but haven't made it to any meetings so far. Recently Sue Peterson moved and the group's been turned over to new managment (I think??) but her jam group/band was called Raging Zephyr. I can't remember the Meetup name right off. If you find me on Meetup (either as Linda Adams/could be registered as "adamszoo") you might be able to find it. Eastside Music Jam? Something??? But like I said I've never physically met any of them.
Terrill - the snow was depressing. I'm glad it's gone, but it still seems COLDER than it should be for May. Ugh!
Doug - Nice to meet you! I'm not far from you at all. Down Kent/Covington/Auburn way. My in-laws used to live in Fairwood, once upon a time.
Doug or Terrill, Tell us more about the Songwriters of the Northwest Guild. Never heard of it, but it sounds good.
OK... it's crummy weather today so I'm inside a little more, but that's enough thinking for me for one day. LOL. Write back - I'm listening along.

Linda Hey Linda...you can find Mo' info on the songwriters guild at this website... http://www.songnw.com/ I had been away for awhile but upon returning a few of the writers had some serious stuff going on in Nashville, a couple folks from NSAI down in LA had joined, some new writers and veterans alike. Paul Jarvis runs the meetings and he'd attened every Steve Seskin songwriting seminar of the past decade. I joke about that, but he was flying down to Oakland every Monday to meet with Seskin to write. Got some great songs to prove it. I nudged Paul to come check out JPF...but let me nudge you to come check out SONGNW. It's coming up next week...Well, next week being the first Thursday in May. Honestly, after having been away for a couple of years I have yet to reconnect with some of the members so I don't know what they have going on other than Paul and Scott Hamilton. Go check out the website and then come on by... T

Missed it.... I'm not available on Monday nights, like, ever - is there a chance this is ever held on a different night? It sound like loads of fun. Oh! While I'm here.... We're holding the Eastside Music Jam Meetup at *my house* THIS SATURDAY. It's usually at TR's house, but he's out of town, and I offered my place for it. I can't serve alcohol in my home for religious reasons, but it's OK to bring other snacks, soda pop, etc. if you like. PM me for the address if you want to come. Or, go out to http://folk.meetup.com/50/ and join the Meetup! The Meetup says limit 12, but I can fit a few more in if you show up. I've been swamped over here lately or I'd have posted this a little sooner. Doh. Hope you can come!! Linda

Well, I got all ready for the Meetup - And found out that "If you build it, they will come" just isn't true. Nobody showed up tonight. I was offline Friday & today doing other stuff--like cleaning the house, baking brownies, buying pop & snacks etc-- and when 7 pm came and nobody came, then 7:30 and nobody came, I finally got online to see the 5 "yes" RSVP's changed to "no" overnight. Either nobody wanted to drive down to Auburn, or nobody wanted to come to a Mormon house that can't serve alcohol. I dunno which. I've never had a party nobody came to before. So this is a really weird feeling. But, my family will eat the brownies anyway. I may go to Baskin-Robbins & drown my disappointment in ice cream. LOL. Linda

Heidi, that is way, WAY cool!!!!! I'm not sure we can make the game tho - tickets are expeeeeeensive, and hubby says "BYU plays the week before... if we go to a game this year, it's that one!" How long are you staying? Could you hop down south for dinner, or anything like that? We could come up UW direction - I would so very much love to meet you! Linda

Oh, very cool. Thanks for checking into it! We have an evening commitment that night my hubby just reminded me about... what time is the game? We have to be in Bellevue by 5:45. Make sure we know if you come in a day early, or in time for breakfast--but I'll have to change the dinner invite to breakfast. Still--if you come in early maybe enough JPFers can get together to throw you a meet-n-greet or something. Y'think?? And if I miss meeting you when you're here, that'll just stink! Linda

Hey Heidi, not that it's all-important or anything, but under your name there I just noticed it still says "Serious Contributor," although you're a Top 100 Poster these days! Check with Brian. Maybe it's not an automated change-up. Linda
