Mel Gibson's Apocalypto Wow! I had no idea what this movie was about at all I slipped on the DVD and was just rocked. It was like the old movie "Quest For Fire" on steroids and juiced... It was shot beautifully... But most of all it makes you take a whole different approach to life. Very graphic! Was very surprising and captivating. It was really good. Too bad though cause Blue used to be my favorite color.. You did not want to be caught wearing blue in this film

Mike: I've been meaning to see that film. I really liked "Quest for Fire" too. Mel's a little flakey for me but if the movie's good, I'll ignore that.

I heard it had a lot more similarities with Naked Prey, a movie made years ago which seems to have been heavily borrowed fron here. That was a great movie and I am looking forward to this one as well when I get off the road.

Hi Sub!
Yeah, I think that was the Best Movie I've seen in Ages. MADE ya think Outside of Our Day-to-Day Culture..(Tho many of those Natives' Problems were quite similar to our own..gettin' Food on da table..avoidin' Bad Politics..Stayin' Alive..& Raisin' Families..Somehow!)
LOTS of Great Chase Scenes..Beautiful Jungles..pretty-deadly Pig Traps..who could ask for More, eh? ;-)>
Wee Bit Ironic Mel got his Oscar for it in "Best Foreign Language Film" Category...but he sure deserved at LEAST one for This Fine Flick..IMO. (Dunno How many Audience Members SPEAK Ancient Mayan...heh-heh...but That's Show Biz!)
Peace Bro, Big Guy-Hug, Stan

Yes Stan I watched it again inside of 2 weeks and it was great again. I showed it to my wife she asked do you mind seeing it againso soon. I said nope Just the facial expressions of the main character told so much, he was excellent. The costumes and scenary were sublime and the way the suffering of this guy and his people never stops. Talk about a bad 48 hours. I haven't seen too many newer movies I wait till everything comes to DVD so I'm always behind/ But I haven't seen a better movie than this recently. It had me glued to the screen. Couldn't help but think at the end when they finally catch him the last 2 guys and the main hero staring at the ships coming in. They fight each other non stop to death untill WE show up then they all have a common enemy. Remind you of something and somewhere else that's going on. Peace buddy! I'll come in for the real thing

HI agsin, Sub!
Wife & I took in Bruce Willis' "Live Free/Die Hard" Flick last nite...another Very Violent yet-Very-Entertaining Action Flick...The Message here being the US is Very Vulnerable to Computer-Driven Attack. (& of course, Bruce Saves The World, heh!)
You'll prolly Love the bit where Bruce has to visit a Hacker called "The Warlock" to help him in his Quest..since the CIA & FBI aren't able to well-communicate with each other..& him.
It's NOT as Intellectual as the Gibson-Flick, but quite Entertaining. Special Effects as the Harrier-Type Jet strafes Bruce in a Semi-Rig (& the Freeway Collapses) are on the Incredible Side. Like "Apocolypto" it's One Big Long Chase Scene, in-essence..with James Bondian Villians in abundance.
Think you'll like it...
Best Wishes, Stan

I saw Apocaypto a few weeks ago. For the most part, I liked it. I especially liked the transition from forest to slum to city as they walked the prisoners to the temple; everything was generally filthy and in decay, hardly glamourous or exotic at all. I loved that detail. It really drove the point home that the whole society was teetering on the brink.
My only complaint is there was ONE utterly ridiculous scene near the end of the film that broke the spell for me. I saw it and thought "oh, right, this is a movie."

Hi Stan I'll check it out on DVD for sure. I don't get out very much and never to the movies. I did love the first Die Hard movie very unique entertaining and original. Peace bro! Scott - I wonder if it was the same scene I was thinking of... Was a real good film though and the visual told the whole story without having to even read any words.

I went to a movie in a theatre today for the first time in over 2 years. Now I remember why - 12 bucks for the 2 of us to get in (was a matinee) but 16 bucks for 2 popcorns and 2 small sodas! I could have rented 6 movies (with popcorn and sodas) for the combined price But some things just have to be seen on the big screen. We saw Live Free and Die Hard - what a great flick! Yeah, rent it on DVD, Sub..... Pure mindless entertainment - just what I needed Was also interesting that my wife and I were the only 2 people in the theatre. It took us until halfway through to get out of the habit of whispering Scott

"Apocalypto" is Gibson's second great argument for the separation of church and state, "The Passions of the Christ" being the first. In each we see what happens to a man when the church and state conspire against him. In "Apocalypto" it is especially instructive to see the priests and kings exchange knowing looks as the eclipse of the sun begins and they begin to propagandize the crowd that it is an act of the gods that only their sacrifice of gold and life to them, as representatives of the gods, can atone for. In these times of theo-cons in church and state of all religions, conspiring to mislead the world to holy wars, I thought it was particularly instructive. This is what man is, a superstitious creature, easily manipulated, and prone to predatory manipulation of and by his fellows. Leaders teaching us to rise above our primitive past, our primitive selves, are so rare as to be made famous by their oddity among misleaders who keep us preying and being preyed upon by our superstions. Where Christ is the main victim in that film, his is only the example of what happens to whole societies when madmen take the helm of the ship of state and conspire with those who make their living with primitive superstitions. The whole of many societies suffer under the conspiracy of church and state in "Apocalytpto," as they do in modern times, and have in the past around the world.

I don't mind the price of tickets of going to the movies but good lord the food is just outrageous. You know what though people eat the food less and less these days. Those theaters need to get it in their heads that they would make more money by making the prices more reasonable. I totally agree some movies you just have to see on the big screen.
