I watched American Idol on UK cable TV for the first time tonight. It must have been last week's heat,as there were 4 contestants..There were all singing Barry Gibb compositions..In all honesty, it is much the same formula as the UK version...blandness in its crudest form..The young lady Lakisha was voted off,it should have been the guy Blake..he was doing his Kamikaze Pilot with his choice of songs...Melinda has a nice voice..thats about it..Jordan is in the same boat, only a bit better looking..again a very nice voice...Blake looks a geek, but he has a bit of personality at least..probably appeals to the younger voter...but what the three of them lack big-time is "Stage Presence"...they may "sound the part" but they definately do not "look the part"..And their collective rendition of a medley of the Bee Gee's Hits, was mind numbing embarrasement...Musical fodder for the masses...Simon Cowell and his cronies have a lot to answer for,on both sides of the pond..They fill their pockets, and at the same time bring music down to the lowest common denominator..instant stardom from the living room...a click of a mouse,or a phone call, and you have cracked it...meanwhile millions of youngsters who have a bit of talent, and can play a musical instrument,in a lot of cases have to PAY venues,to showcase their music,to try and get their foot on the bottom rung of the musical ladder...The singer's who are voted off all seem to shed a tear...at least they don't hump instruments and PA's out with them, and while they dry their eyes,Mr Cowell is laughing all the way to the bank...and thinking to himself...Hey Guys.."I can do all this again next year"...There used to be an old saying"never give a mug a break" well, who is the mug?..and who is gettin the break?...all you musical voyuers...Mr Cowell can answer that...Terry Moore

Thanks Terry I have been campaigning on the various threads on this site against Mr Cowell, AI and it's clones for some time now. My biggest concern about these so called entertainment shows is the exploitation and RIDICULE of people who have lets just say personality or learning PROBLEMS. Most of my comments and observations seem to fall on deaf ears. At last an ally. JIM

I just wish they would have an original band and/or singer-songwriter show, without giving them covers and themes to do. Would be like the best of JPF awards meets all the other Indies! But the producers with their "Search for the next great American Band" show idea will be doing it just like the singers; covers and themes, instead of letting original bands be themselves. But, business being business, they are going to do what is proven. And that means making fun of some, for the ratings have been high for those type of early on shows, or they wouldn't do it. The bottom line is what is taught in business 101 on up.

Hi Big Jim....Yes i did watch last season some of the "qualifying" rounds over here on the UK version...Talk about" mocking the afflicted"...to put people, who obviously have mental health problems,up for public scrutiny, all in the name of"entertainment"....but that is how low "reality " television has stooped nowadays..but of course that is only the starter on Cowell's Reality Menu..You then go thru the annual drudgery of finding a new "disposable" star, when the paint has hardly dried on the previous one.But hopefully some day soon the great big public,on both sides of the pond, will wake up and smell the glove, this has sweet fanny adams to do with finding and nurturing new talent,it is all about Cowell and his mob exploiting the public, and using music as his tool. Now he has moved into the Songwriting arena, another quick buck exercise..but you can be very sure, tho it is a "crap shoot" for the Songwriter, the dice will be loaded very much,in the favour of Cowell, and his associates..Over here in the UK,you could paper your walls with the names of those past "reality" winners, all under the different Cowell guises...POP IDOL..X FACTOR..ETC ETC..most of them are back doin their day jobs..or singing in some loss making musical..or back haunting the pubs and clubs..living off their 15 secs of fame...from being "bosom" buddies of Cowell..when they were "winners",they have a better chance of talking direct to the POPE in the Vatican,as they have of getting a return call from Cowell on his cellphone.Like all previous winners they are all "yesterday" men...as Cowell say's "my public await,i must give them a new Idol" Terry Moore

Hi Big Jim, I would like to hear your opinion on how Simon has handled this songwriting endeavor this season for the first time. Did he do that over in your neck of the woods? Tammy www.tammyedwards.com

Hi Tammy....i can answer that for you...no..the Songwriting endeavor is his latest brainchild...probably being tried out on the American Version first....to be quite honest, dunno if he would try it over here. BBC Radio Two,the biggest MOR listening station in the UK,couple of years back did a "Search For a Song" contest for Songwriters, funnily enough one of the Gibb Bros, was one of the judges,Robin...anyway, the song that won...sunk without a trace..didn't even chart, despite all the yahoo Radio Two could give it...So it goes to prove winning a songwriting contest...well...it proves nothing...Terry Moore

IT will be interesting to see what happens to the winning song here in America. We are all going to be watching that one. They sure underplayed everything concerning that.

I'm very curious what they do with the band contest. At least they took off age discrimination... but if they make the bands do cover after cover every week, well what point is there in THAT??? If they have them write song after song in various genres every week to showcase their actual musical abilities... or "write a song in Ab minor" or some such... that's different... but who knows what the plan is. Even though I follow the show (guilty as charged) my favorite name for it is "American Idolatry..." Linda

Hi All Terry about summed it up. These things are just money making scams and no thoughts about fairness or integrity ever enters Mr S.C's mind. It's a shame that so many people pin false hopes to his little games. As for a band contest well I predict it will be another con job with the same format as all his other stuff. He pulls the strings and has control of everything including who wins and what songs they will sing. Hey Tammy Mr Cowell and similar type con-men love people like you. Great cannon fodder for him. Regardless of how bad, unfair and dishonest he is there are still enough, nice, honest, innocent, gullable folk who encourage him by watching his crappy programs and buying his records and merchandise etc. Wolves like nice juicy lambs. Easy prey. P.S. No disrespect meant.

Hi Jim, no disprespect taken here. I admit that I am gullable and believe the best in everyone. I just always dream of everything being true, honest and fair. Maybe living a sheltered common life in Iowa has made me that way. It sure hurts getting stung. My skin isn't tough enough to take alot of the knocks. There sure make it look all sweet and candy coated on T.V. Wouldn't we all like to know what goes on behind the scenes? To listen in on some of those conversations about these contests and the contestants. It would be more than an earful and might remedy the problem for alot of us. I appreciate you and your imput! Yes,the silence is deafening, concerning the outcome of the AI. song contest..so far anyway, but i would be very surprised if the song chosen, would be the actual single release of the winner.more likely to be a cut, included on their debut album...or the winning song is a well connected "plant"...which would negate all the entries anyway...will make it all the more interesting, when the time comes around to see what song is actually chosen, and the credentials of the writer/writers? ooooh Terry, you have me all on pins and needles here LOL. The conversation is getting "Really HOT" on some other sites right now about this issue. A couple of the judges have stepped up to the plate and are leaving little nibbles of info. (one guy claims to have listened to some of our songs.)Nothing too incriminating. Just trying to defend Simon and the contest. They say alot of people in the industry are reading comments from alot of these various songwriting sites. One guy had the nerve to say that what did we expect a better song from a pro writer or a housewife?? Geez! That was NOT good. Tammy www.tammyedwards.com
